I keep reading these threads and seeing what everyone says about Berba and Keane possibly (probably!) leaving the club in the near future.

Most seem to be resigned to loosing Berba and we all seem to have come to terms with it, so long as £25/£30mil appears in the bank and quickly goes to spain or russia for a quality replacement.

With regards to Keane, most seem to want "Mr Tottenham" to stay. I love him too, we all sing about him at the lane and we all love the effort he puts in.

But to me, £18mil seems like good business for a player who cost us £7mil, gets stroppy at being on the bench, isnt good in 1 on 1s (usefull as a striker) and who's form can fluctuate from Ronaldinho-esque play one week to David Healey form the next week. Dont get me wrong, even when he has been off form (not scoring) he always gives his all, but for me, the lack of form appears to much. Again, I know people will argue that his scoring record speaks for itself but I can recall some fairly horendous misses from Keane in the past.

So long as he is replaced with quality (eg Arshavin or Villa) I for one would be very happy with the situation.

Does anyone else feel like this or does everyone want Keane to stay with us?

18-20 million would be good business. But then so was Carrick for 18.6 and that put us on a downward spiral. It's not easy to replace quality players, otherwise these big teams wouldn't be trying to buy our players for huge sums of money

No -(as long as he wants to go then £18m sounds good to me - and I suspect JR - but what do I know about that - not a lot)

Hi TW - take your point about quality players - but far from going on a downward spiral we actually played better football the season after Carrick left

and indeed for me both the last two 'post-Carrick' seasons have been more successful than the last season Carrick played for us

doubtless these last two seasons would have been even better with Carrick - but we are a trading club and we will sell at the right price if the player wants to go etc etc

sometimes we'll sell at the wrong price too :)

the money we got in from Carrick helped us buy players like Berbatov (a definite step up from Carrick, ) - of course it wasn't a straight swap - indeed conversely you could say the Carrick money helped us buy players who ahem weren't as good to put it mildly-

but under the Levy trading model - it can't be all buy buy buy - sometimes it's time to sell as well

dunno. he scores a lot of goals. highest league scorer in all of 2007, beating even ronaldo. consistent premier league scorer for last three seasons, pretty much scoring and creating everything we did post xmas 2005 in the lasagna-gate season. brilliant work rate too. but ....
know what you mean. also limits the way we can play: can't play up front alone and despite being able to do a job wide he simple isn't a wide man. and, yes, he does miss a lot of chances so maybe someone for less could do just as well. hypothetical of course.
anyway, if he does leave i'll hate seeing him in red for liverpool.

1Its not god business as we are trying to overtake the team we are selling to. To any other team 18m is a decent price but not to Liverpool. We really need to be getting around 22m with all of it upfront in 1 payment.

Keane can go as long as we sign a better replacement i.e villa, eto'o or arshavin

Very good amount of money......how many times over the years has he been linked with cut price moves away. He always seemed the one player that constantly had a very low valuation on his head by the media regardless of how he performed. Great that when it comes to him actually going it looks like we will do very well out of it.

I'm not sure we will get that but if we get anything like that it's good business.
A couple of things on the similarity with Carrick, We did miss him because pretty much everything went through him but as DC says we had to develop our game the next season which was better for us in the long term.
One very important point is that Robbie is a favourite of ours but he isn't that integral to us, we have moved on and really are in a much better position to replace peoples with a higher grade of player.
Take the money at that price.

yeah, good business for 3 reasons
1) 18m for a 29 yrd old 2nd tier strikers is a high price
2) I forces Liverpool to play more of a 442 which i thik plays into our hands a bit in the head to heads
3) It open up a starting piostion for us to get in someone better

now us getting in someone better is not garaunteed but we are obviously trying

Villa, Arshavin and Eto are all better than Keane.

stupid talk since you know absolutely shite who would replace him. Only then anyone can have an idea if it's good or not!

Valid point but I think we also really need to consider Keane's desire to leave.

Look the reason why Liverpool are willing to pay 18m for Keane, is as much to do with the internal politics at that club as anything else. They have suffered with disappointments the likes of Kewell, Crouch, Kuyt and Voronin. They are in the top four but want to be higher. Fourth is not a destination but only a spot on the way! The 'Keane' solution for Liverpool is an attempt to find that edge to take them further. Player input from the likes of Gerard have driven it.This explains why they are paying 18m for someone we would have guessed at the end of last season was 7m maximum!

yes 18/20m is good business, but we are only going to have to spend the same again to get someone as good.

If Keane is worth 2 points more over the course of a season than any replacement then selling him to Liverpool is like spotting them 4 points .

It's only good business if the 18m is used to purchase someone else who is better and if regular CL qualifiers Liverpool can't do that then there is little chance Spurs can .

take the money ONLY if we have quality lined up. not a zokora equivalent.
