Areas to strengthen within the squad

Hopefully during this summer's transfer window, we will make use of our Champions League status as a powerful tool to attract players which are able to improve our starting 11 and hence, our squad. I believe that it is not a necessity to break the bank, but if we have the opportunity to add competition for places, our club can only benefit.

In my opinion, the most obvious signing should be a striker who can either; come off the bench and act as an impact substitute, step up when Kane needs a rest, or if Harry endures a tough couple of matches and the gaffer feels he does not merit a place in the line up, or even if we feel the need to change our style of play every once in a while and shift to two strikers up front.

Another area I feel we must address is the central midfield position. It was quite clear that whenever the likes of Dembele or Alli were missing, our performances were just not at their optimum level, and I believe that we do not have the strength in depth in this position. Adding to this, I highly doubt that Dier can go through another season of playing most of our fixtures across all competitions and manage to maintain the same level of performances. That would increase the possibility of sustaining an injury, and he would undoubtedly, be physically drained. I think that two players in this position are required next season, with players like Mason,Winks,Carroll and Bentaleb possibly being sold or loaned out to make room for signings, and to provide us with some cash to spend.

One attribute which we are not as strong in as much as other teams, is pace. With Son and Clinton still to show us what they are capable of, I would give them another season to prove themselves. On the other hand, Chadli has been performing below expectations of late, and I would not be surprised if he was to leave this summer. I think it would be best for both player and club for him to leave, as it could lead to a better player to come in and improve us, and he could gain more game time somewhere else and maybe retain his place in the Belgian squad in the following years. It is also yet to be determined if Pritchard has what it takes to challenge for a spot in the squad. Hopefully we get to see him in pre-season, and then we can voice our opinion.

Other than that, I believe we have what we need to continue to pursue our objectives, and this young squad can only improve with experience and the guidance of Pochettino and his staff. I honestly cannot wait for next season and I hope that our last season at the Lane, will be an unforgettable one. In Poch I trust. COYS

Plenty on here to agree with. We certainly don't need wholesale changes; we're about the team not the individual. The paper talk of five going is ridiculous as I can't see us buying five players this summer (and we need to maintain a healthy squad size). The agents fees alone would be huge. And we don't need the upheaval.

I would like to see better competition for Lloris. The argument of "what if Kane gets injured?" has merit. But what if Hugo got injured? Both instances are single point of failure and could have dramatic reprocess ions. Vorm worries me (and our defenders, it seems).

Wonder if Krul fancies the championship?

A useful player might be Blind. Can play in several positions, good passer, intelligent. Rate him.

Not sure where he would play for us? We are well stocked at left CB, midfield maybe? But I've not seen him play there much tbh

I think he's much more suited to playing as a Defensive Midfielder. He has a good pass on him too. He's not the quickest, but I think he's a very intelligent player.

I think we desperately need a couple of wide strikers.

Would Man City, Arsenal or Chelsea be happy with Son as a wide striker.

the worry is will he be happy with starting on the bench?

we have a very good starting XI, but struggle with depth. we need to bring players in that can compete with the starting XI, but we also need to have a squad stronger than what we have this season, but also a squad that are happy with being squad players not guaranteed starters.

Alli has had a great 1st season, if we buy a forward/wing forward like Lacazette, then 1 of Alli, Eriksen, Lamela or Dembele might not play as much this season, will they be happy with that?

it's going to be a tough window, we definitely need to get in another striker, and another willing to be back up, unless Harrison can prove something during the pre season that might promote him.

the 2 things I would love to see next season is a stronger squad and 1 that has the harmony of the season just gone, actually add a 3rd & 4th thing a trophy return out of the 4 comps would be great, and also another top 4 finish

Would be an excellent acquisition, not only for the calibre of player but I believe he has experience in playing Champion's League football.

The only down side would be it would block the path of CCV getting more first team experience.

Very important season for the young American.

Fucking off Southampton is now something I like. However would he be happy knowing he's not first choice? I know we'll prob be rotating a bit more next season but he'll be playing week in week out at Southampton. Plus after the season he's had he'll cost 20m plus.

Then pay the 20 million and sell Chadli, Carroll, mason, Fazio, yedlin and buy one other real quality player

@glospur

Rather than spam up the ITK thread I'll reply in here.

I don't get why all of a sudden Mason, a player who helped us achieve a higher placed finish in the league than Wanyama did at Southampton, despite Wanyama having a superior coach, some excellent players players (including some we wanted to pay good money for) like Schniederlin, Rodriguez, Lallana, Lovren, Shaw, Clyne etc. and Mason playing next to a 20yo rookie an ever changing defence with the likes of Fazio and a a very green and in some cases lazy (Townsend/Chadli) front four, is now considered an inferior CM to Wanyama. Mason was playing really well before getting a serious injury, he then came back into a team that was already stuttering, carrying an injury after barely playing any meaningful consistent games.

Although I think Onomah would be better in a CM3, I think I'd even rather see him given more time in a CM2 than spend money on Wanyama to sit on our bench. Or Lesniak even, kids a right little busy **** and he can play a bit too.

We read glowing testimony from Schneiderlin about how Poch developed his game, we have very talented players here already who need that developing. I'd rather very good footballers like Mason or Onomah are taught how to defend a bit better because we are never going to teach Wanyama how to be a more intelligent footballer.

You give nowhere near enough respect or credit to the art and talent of defending. It's obvious in your various Walker diatribes, your opposition to the Alderweireld signing and everywhere in this post. What makes positional awareness, discipline, reading of the play and timing in the tackle any less valuable than the 'footballing' talents that you so revere? It's not a case of just teaching a player whose inclinations are to be ball players to 'defend a bit better' or be a busy **** (whatever the fuck that means), there is an entire skill set involved with playing in that area of the pitch that can't just be taught to 'footballers' over night.

The fact is that when Dier didn't play we looked fucking fragile in the the middle of the park because we didn't have that dedicated defensive midfielder and he just couldn't play every game; it's not sustainable. I know you would rather a midfield 3 who all play wonderful flowing football but that's just not reality; not just for us, but for every team. We need a player with a defensive mindset and the appropriate skill set to compete with Dier in that position, because I sure know that I don't want a fucking midfield 3 of Bentaleb, Onomah and fucking Lesniak playing in the Champions League - or the Premier League for that matter - next season.

I hold defending in vey high esteem, but defending, like any other facet requires intelligence, hence the various Walker diatribes.

Any opposition to Alderweireld was purely based on my fear on the impact it would have on Dier's development as a CB. A position I still think will be his forte. But I never once said I don't rate Alderweireld.

Where have I said in the post you are responding to that I don't value positional awareness, discipline, reading, tackle timing less than "footballing" talents?

Correct me if I'm wrong but Dier played in just about every single game in which we gave up winning positions, including two games when we gave up 2 goal leads at the beginning and end of the season.

You don't know I would rather play a midfield 3 who all play wonderful football football because I've never said those words, in fact in most CM3's I've suggested I have included Dier in the centre of it.

You say you don't want to see a CM3 of Onomah, Bentaleb and Lesniak but I should think 2 years ago you'd have been saying the same about a CM3 that could contain Dier, Alli and Dembele, none of whom were remotely close to looking like a CM3 that could play in the CL, but that would be a CM3 I'd happily see play CL now.
