Arsenal have one big advantage this summer to last. They don't have to worry about losing their top players.

Last summer they bought Cazorla who is a superb player. They also bought the top scorer in France and a striker with an excellent record for Germany. I believe Giroud will come good but Podolski won't amount to anything special.

Most of Wenger's successful signings are not massive hits right away or big name players.

Vieira, Anelka, Adebayor, Sagna, Clichy, Toure, Diaby, Song, Nasri, Diarra, Gilberto and Fabregas were all brought in and took a while to get to the top of their game. Only Henry and Vermaelen were instant successes.

So Arsenal probably won't lose anyone of note this summer but I expect them to buy 2 or 3 players. It's the likes of Giroud who'll feel like a new signing for them next season.

In other, totally unrelated and entirely coincidental news, Arsenal season tickets for the 2013/14 season go on sale in the next few weeks.

Analysis of the figures also suggests Arsenal’s wage bill will exceed £150  million for the first time this season, more than £50 million higher than that of Tottenham Hotspur, their rivals for a Champions League place.

Makes you wonder who they are spending the money on. Their squad is no better than ours. Not 50% better anyway.

And they will spend fuck all of that. It is amazing though how similarly our PR dept's work

Indeed, the question people should be asking is asking how they've managed to get £123m in the bank!

Be interesting to see how their heralded waiting list holds up then - I reckon a major struggle. They have already (a few weeks ago I believe) announced there will be no increase this year. What chance Spurs doing the same chaps? I predict a 'modest' increase this year for us at a little over £1 a match (again!!!).

Our wage bill at £90M is still bloated, Jenas, Gomes, Huddlestone, Cudicini, Bently, have took placed a burden of at least 10-15M on it every year. That's our striker right there.

But £150m is huge

so their big advantage is that they wont lose their best players because they've already sold them all ?

I don't buy all this stuff about wenger buying really great players , most of his successful buys were in the early days when he had a huge advantage of knowing the french market better than any of the other premier league managers. a lot of his recent buys have been very average. compare his team now to to the side that went the whole season unbeaten and you'll see how much they've declined in recent years .

Arsenal are currently 5th and I predict they'll finish 5th this season. Going into next season surely not losing any of their current top players is a positive for them.

I didn't say Wenger buys great players. They still have a good team and aren't far behind us. Wenger trains his players well and transitions them into the team slowly. Making big signings is not his way and when he has tried it, it has generally been unsuccessful.

They might be in decline but they are close to us still. Being well-run financially surely is a positive for them in regards to competing with us next season.

So far, like ourselves, Arsenal have not paid over £20 million for a player (before add-ons at least). I think Cazorla and Arshavin have been their biggest buys?

If they don't make Champions League I doubt they'll lose anyone, they don't seem to have billy-big-bollocks type players there and, if anything, they'll have to make a statement to keep the fans/players/shareholders happy. I can see them spending big this summer. They must have a fair bit of revenue left over from their sales and by cutting out a few redundant players who are on decent money (Bendtner, Djorou, Denilson, Squillaci all on around 50k-60k apparently) they can free up some wage money. They must also be making good income from ticket sales on such a big stadium (even if not selling out every game), so they should theoretically be in an excellent financial position.

This is the weakest Arsenal side I have seen in a long time and if they fuck about they'll got he way of Liverpool. I doubt they will though and I fully expect them to try and compete with some good signings next year.

Fair enough. That first line was quite funny, but I know what you are getting at as we are in a similar position about not having to worry about any more nonsense from Modric this summer. Although with us it all shifts to Bale instead. I'm not sure they will keep all their players. Teams see them as a selling club now so will come calling if they see someone they want. The biggest loss for them could be Wenger if he decides to move on. He seems to losing more of the crowd each year and he looks like a guy under huge pressure now. Bad timing for us really as every time they look to be in crisis and play us they manage to pull something out of the bag.

The selling club tag is complete nonsense. Only Real Madrid and Barcelona never sell players they want at the top of their game.

Every other clubs has other clubs higher on the food chain.

In recent seasons out of the players Arsenal wanted to keep they've sold Van Persie, Fabregas, Nasri, Adebayor, Toure, Song, Clichy and Hleb. They all went to Man City, Man Utd or Barcelona.

They could have made big money on other players like Walcott but haven't. They only sell those they don't want and those that want out. Same as us. Nothing like the same as being a selling club.

Wenger will certainly be the bigger loss to them. Fans don't know what they have until they lose it.

I agree that all clubs have to sell to clubs that are higher up the food chain. It's one of the reasons most Spurs fans wouldn't begrudge Bale a move to Real & Barca when it happens. I think the reason Arsenal have that reputation now is because they've sold to their rivals - United and City have both tasted success with players Arsenal needed to try to stay in touch with them. I'm not sure if any of the other top four clubs would have done that. Walcotts an interesting one, he clearly wanted to leave, but no-one apart from Liverpool seemed interested, and he ended up staying on ridiculous wages. I'll admit that unlike a lot of people on here I don't think he's a bad player, but the amount he's meant to be getting now is staggering.

they are always going to spend big when they have a couple of bad results. Its not what usually happens though
