I think the OP is really exagerrating Dawson's deficiencies. This is once again, every sodding thread, making it hard to have a proper debate.

Rose is injured meaning we can either play Naugthton left back or Vertonghen. Naughton has played poorly each time I've seen him this season, and last, so I'd rather we play Vertonghen there.

With Kaboul injured as well this leaves us with limited options. We can either play Dawson or push Capoue back into defence. With Capoue's range of passing and comfortableness on the ball I can understand wanting him to play in midfield.

Chiriches has really impressed me and I see him as being ahead of Dawson even with a lack of integration time. Once Rose or Kaboul are back to full fitness I think Dawson has to take a back step.

Maybe Capoue in centre back is a better move but it's risky playing 2 new players to the Prem together.

Playing Dawson in these circumstances is really not that bad a situation.

Watched MOTD tonight and I my spidey sense tingled when I saw Dawson's "run". I knew it was going to go horribly wrong and so it did. However I have to wonder where the rest of the defence disappeared to.

Yeh, but in curtailed highlights you know when it shows Dawson coming out with the ball that either a) he will make a mistake and they will score or b) hit a wonder through ball for Defoe to run onto and score. Obviously b) is highly unlikely, so I feared the worst as well. Love Daws, but he plays as if his feet are just a bit too big for his body.

Lets be honest....fans who want Dawson in the team long term, shouldn't really complain if we finish outside the top 4,hasn't the penny dropped yet that he is not really top draw, at a Stoke or a Sunderland would be more his thing, but if you are looking for a team competeing at the very top and then the CL itself, then please stop kidding ourselves that Dawson is our man ....it sounds harsh because he is so likeable and loves us so much...but i love spurs more than i love Dawson....sorry Michael..:(

Yet the first year we finished 4th to get into CL, he was outstanding. Properly brilliant. Got him an England call up, got crocked playing for England and missed most of the CL games.

The title of the thread isn't "we are garbage because Dawson is in the team". My point is simply that given the quality of our football there are a number of things wrong but the most obvious of which is picking the so slow Dawson for a high line defence. If we drop him will we all of sudden be Spurs circa Jan 2012 ? No. We will however have fixed an obvious problem. We can then move on to others like - never pick Defoe as a lone striker, another fairly obvious team selection issue just one that happens less frequently than picking Dawson.

But dropping Dawson for who though at the moment? Kaboul seems to not be match fit at the moment so for CB that leaves Verts and AT A STRETCH Capoue. Capoue is mainly a midfielder so would you really play him in his second position. No guarantee it'd work. As for Verts, we currently need him at LB as Rose is out injured and Naughton isn't good enough at LB. Verts is needed to deputise there meaning Dawson starts in CB.

Has he been responsible for a couple of goals? Yeah. We can see that but we can also see our teams been playing poorly as a whole lately. Sloppy passes etc... and it's just unfortunate that for both Keepers and Defenders there mistakes often lead to goals. Soldado, Defoe, Townsend, Paulinho, Lamela etc... have all made a few mistakes this season but because of there positions there's don't lead to goals whereas unfortunately Dawson's do.

Personally, I still think he's a good CB. Currently (arguably) 4th choice behind Ciri, Verts and Kaboul but with the circumstances atm he's still good enough. He will make the tackle, he will put his body on the line. He's got experience too, possibly more than the other CB's we have. His main weakness is simply that he's too slow for the style of football AVB wants to play. If that is his main problem at the moment then I'm not too worried. Especially since we've had a fairly good defensive record this season (baring Man City)

Of all the goals we've conceded in the league so far, I make Dawson at least partially responsible for at least half of them.

He has a track record of neither (a) or (b), so the problem isn't his, it is perception.

FFS.

The ball was lost on the right wing at the half-way line. More than enough time/space to rescue the situation.
And yet, when the ball was played forward to the un-marked Fulham player, who went on to score, where the hell was our left back?
In the oppositions half. Why?

Oh, and don't even dare mention who that left-back was. God forbid golden boy should be blamed.

Had to vote John Terry scenario, as I think Daws will be phased out by the end of the season when Vlad proves he can be trusted over a whole season; then we'll see Vlad/Verts as the back two.

I think Dawson is currently picked because of his captain status, and the fact that Kaboul is not match sharp at all. Kaboul is ultimately the better player, but he's not played many games in over a year, and had some positional howlers against Man City. His inability to guard against the crosses from the right were very poor that day...

Vertonghen, Kaboul, Chiriches, Capoue and maybe a new young centre back will be fine for me.

Happy to have Dawson in the current circumstances though.

Kaboul and one other. Kaboul may be up for rotation if his injury has cut back his ability. The one other could be Daws, but I don't think he would be willing to see his career out as a bench player, so we'll maybe see him leave at the end of the season. Leaving us a spare spot for back-up CB.

Leaving it until the end of the season means nobody gets upset by sudden movements, into or out of the club. Removing your captain mid-season is not a great idea. Another reason I think AVB will wait until the end of the season.

Waiting also gives Baldini and AVB enough time to identify a CB that is good enough to come into the side and replace the quality of Vlad/Verts; the difficult bit is finding someone willing to be back-up/rotation that is of that sort of quality.

we were in possession though, where was Vertonghen supposed to be? he's the full-back, so he's supposed to push on. and when Dawsonbauer decides to go on a foray forward, Chiriches then has to cover, leaving a hole between LCB and LB....which is all fine as long our new libero doesn't lose the ball stupidly 30 yards from goal.

I don't think there are any other leaders in the side.

Last few games...City, United, Fulham...have showcased his erratic side and flaws in his game.

But I definitely believe things would not be as bad if Jan is playing CB.

It's hard finding good CBs in the modern game unfortunately.

I'd suggest that Paulinho and Townsend's 60-odd shots for two goals (and one of those a complete fluke) was altogether more obvious. The City debacle aside, the defence has been remarkably sound this season; when did you or anyone else on SC last see us concede just eight in 12?

AVB picks Dawson because . . . .

with Kaboul lacking match fitness, Rose injured and BAE out on loan the alternative is Jan at CB and Naughton looking lost at left back.

My point is simply that given the quality of our football there are a number of things wrong but the most obvious of which is picking the so slow Dawson for a high line defence.

Pretty certain the most obvious problem with this team is the lack of service to our striker. Aside from the Man City and West Ham games our defence has been rather decent. The same can't be said for our attacking play.
