I can't think of a more ideal player for us to sign at LCB than Laporte. There are younger, quicker options but what we need is a blend of experience, ability and leadership to also bring the best out of Romero. If we could add Ndicka on a free as well then I would feel pretty happy that we would be all but set at CB.

The trick would be whether any or all of Dier, Sanchez, Rodon and Tanganga leave. I could certainly see Dier staying out of those 4 but in truth all 4 probably need to go. Rodon would be the only one I think could amount to something and even that would be optimistic.
Totally agree with this.
I see a lot of parallels between Romero and Jan. Not so much in style, more trajectory at Spurs. Both had a strong debut season but both suffered after that as form dipped, the team was reshuffled and managers changed.
It wasn't until toby came who he had that relationship with from Belgium and their time at Ajax that we struck gold.
i'm not implying just because they speak spanish Romero and Laporte would have the instant chemistry of Toby and Jan but that experience and calming communication could spark a decent, balanced pairing, should we sign him.

I’m gonna be controversial and say that out of them all I can see Sanchez being the most useful in a high line with his pace.

They were in Europe.
They hadn't qualified for the CL for 6 years and had finished 8th (equal to our finish this season) in two of the past three seasons.

We finished 4th in 2021-22 with a weaker team (on paper) than we finished 8th with this season. Anyone looking from outside would expect us to improve next season, as the manager situation and injuries clearly impacted us this year.

Being most useful of a trio of Sanchez, Dier and Tanganga is not saying much, preferably all three go and are upgraded on asap

I don’t think that’s realistic though is it. In fact I think I we will have done well if we shift even one of them out.

Two should be the bare minimum. Japhet had interest last summer and Sanchez will have suitors. We need to be ruthless.

I don’t see anyone paying money for Japhet. He’s made of glass and has barely played any mens football. A few years ago he was a decent youth prospect but that’s about it. Unfortunately for him injuries have really held him back he’s now 24 years old and has only played 27 senior games. It’s a real shame for him, because he had bags of potential.

You’d frankly have to be mad to take a gamble on him, he’s just too injury prone and inexperienced.

Oh I would agree, you don’t know how much time on his contract is left?

Maybe a mutual agreement to terminate if he had a deal lined up.

Two years left I think. He’s HG so I wouldn’t be quick to pay up his contract.

That makes no sense. We would still have to pay him up to the end of his contract.

He’s young enough that we could let him go on loan for season to prove his fitness and then hope someone will pay us a nominal fee next summer.

I keep seeing all over this forum that we should basically be giving away half our squad. It’s just unrealistic. As some point we need to sell players if fans want us to sign players. Giving away players but spending money will quickly lead to financial problems down the line.

Nice to see we're still pursuing. I remain pessimistic
Yeah don't mean to be a downer but we've got our hopes up over links to so many out of favour City players over the years and they never come off. Would feel a lot more optimistic if we could offer CL football but without it feels like a long shot to me.

Would be a great signing and defo worth trying for him, but the only way I see us getting him is if he wants to stay in the PL and no CL clubs want him or are willing to stump up his wages.

You say it as if it’s black and white? He has a contract that is costing us and even if he goes on loan they probably won’t be paying his full wages.

Who is also to say if he doesn’t have something lined up a mutual termination could be beneficial to both parties? There is nothing to say we would pay his full contract and we a hardly going to get a fee for him.

I think if favourable terms are agreeable it is what we should be doing. Especially since our squad is so bloated and stale.

During a 'mutual termination' we would still have to pay up most of his contract. So whether we keep him and loan him out or terminate his contract it would make no difference. If a team wants him then giving us a fee to cover the rest of the contract would be the best outcome.

That's our issue every year, we have known for yrs none of them are up to the task, yet they are still here, at some stage we have to bite the bullet and move on, no more excuses.

I really, really want this to be true and for it to happen.

I don’t really understand why every other top team in England and Europe isn’t trying to get him.

Surely one of the super clubs in Italy, Spain, Germany or PSG would be all over this?

Lenglet for €6m and Nelsson for €25m doing the rounds on SM today. Could be we’re in for 3 CBs after all? Would hate it if we don’t bring in a marquee signing at LCB.

Would Lenglet count as a ‘new’ signing though? £30m for 2 squad upgrades is good business providing Laporte comes in too.
