I found it pretty surprising Bale dropped out after spending a couple of years trumpeting the tournament and prepared to run the wrath of the Welsh. I can also see that Pearce, Giggs etc would be pretty pissed off but it is entirely possible to be too injured to front up for a major tourney but ok for some measured on field time in casual pre season football.

Well Giggs shouldn't be pissed. How many times did Giggs suddenly have an injury according to old whisky face, dropping out of a Wales squad only to play for United a few days later? Pretty much every time a Wales game interferred or was close to a United game. He only has 64 caps in 16 years before he "retired" from international duty in 2007. That's 4 matches a year on average. Robbie Keane has 120 games in 14 years for comparison.

That said, I'm not surprised Bale dropped out at all and I very much doubt he had an injury too. We have a new manager, and we can't afford our most important player to be away for our entire pre-season preparation and risk him getting injured playing for someone else either.

https://www.tottenhamhotspur.com/spurs/News/club-statement-gareth-bale-26072012.page
The Club considers the recent comment and accusations regarding Gareth Bale's fitness relating to his non selection for Team GB's men's football team to be wholly unacceptable and unjustified.
For the avoidance of any doubt and on a point of absolute clarity and transparency - Gareth sustained an injury as he built up his fitness ahead of joining up with Stuart Pearce's side. MRI scan reports were sent to the FA medical team on 29 June (2012).
He was subsequently not selected on the basis of this injury and the inability to predict recovery time.
This decision was not taken lightly and made only after consultation with Team GB's medical team, who were in agreement after seeing the medical reports.
At no time was Gareth made unavailable for selection. Indeed, Gareth made clear publicly on numerous occasions his desire to compete for Team GB and was extremely disappointed on hearing the news he would not be fit to participate.
He is now focused on and determined to get fit for the season ahead and to this end we have brought out an additional member of our medical team on tour, dedicated to Gareth's recovery.
We are dismayed that some have sought to make wrongful assumptions about Gareth's particular situation and that such positive news surrounding his recovery is being highlighted in this manner. We trust that this statement now clarifies this matter once and for all.
We look forward to following the progress of our other players in the Games - Danny Rose and Steven Caulker along with Sandro and Giovani dos Santos.

Should help to slap down all the twitter twats and Blatter

The club has released a statement clarifying the circumstances of his injury and non-selection, and the current situation.

Bale gave up probably his only chance to ever play in the Olympics. When he's older, he'll realize that he paid a much higher price than a small ban from Douchey B.

I wonder why no-one at FIFA noticed that Kyle Walker also withdrew from the squad & then started against Galaxy.

This is much ado over nothing. Blatter was asked a question and answered it. He never said that he will ban Bale. He was asked what FIFA can do in these circumstances. People are getting hot headed without even understanding what was actually said thus falling into the tabloid trap

I wonder of they would have made so much of it if Golden Balls had been called up as a replacement?

Gary Lineker knows when team GB gets knocked out he will be commentating on synchronised swimming or worse.

I can't believe that so many people including Lineker would think that playing in the Olypmics and playing in a friendly, to get your game fitness back after returning from injury, is the same thing.

There's a lot of things about this I can't believe so many have taken even remotely serious - it's stinky bullshit, Boris ;)

Yeah Ryan Giggs, who after his debut waited a full 9 years before bothering to show up for another friendly. Then missed a further 18 consecutive friendlies after.

What a legend he was for his country.

All in a nutshell.

anyone know what the score is with his injury ?
'I think it is a very nasty challenge from Charlie,' said Villas-Boas.
'Charlie came to me and said something about the challenge. I can accept, but I think he should go to the player to say sorry. If he [Bale] escapes hospital, it is because he is very lucky. I can never doubt Charlie's integrity but it is a very, very nasty challenge. Gareth is not OK. He's so-so. His ankle is extremely painful and twisted.'

Adam is the one who put Bale out with a horror ankle tackle during his Blackpool days.

A truly dispicable **** who had no intention of playing the ball.

Is it even legal to publish something like this? It might be the scummiest thing I've ever read from a news source.

The Tottenham winger was initially included in the squad for the Games but pulled out with a back injury.
However, a source told the Sunday Mirror the reason was actually that Bale did not have confidence in the team to threaten the gold, silver or bronze positions.

As a result, he decided playing for Stuart Pearce's men was not worth missing three weeks of Spurs' pre-season schedule for.

Bale performed a U-turn after first going against the Welsh FA and agreeing to play for Team GB.
But he caused controversy this week when he appeared for Spurs in their tour of the US and scored in a friendly against LA Galaxy, hours before Team GB kicked off their Olympics campaign against Senegal.

Even his father, Frank, had urged the Welshman to turn out in the hope of succeeding with the new-look British team, but Bale did not think it was the ideal way to prepare for the Premier League season.

He remains committed to performing well for Spurs this season, despite the club recently activating a clause in his contract to extend his deal to 2015 shortly after he told bosses he wanted to leave.
