Watching Bale's goal over and over again got me thinking just how good it was and how it compared to other volley's. So I put it to you, which is the better strike, Bale v. Stoke, Di Canio's 2000 goal of the season v. Wimbledon or Van Basten v. USSR.

For me Bale's is better than Di Canio's and I am sure it will be up there for goal of the season. Van Basten's was from a tougher angle and was in the Euro final which probably put it ahead, but I think Bale's was a technically more difficult strike.

Good thread. I think Van Basten's is the best. It was an unbelievable strike.

Bale's and Di Canio's are difficult to call but i'd probably just go for Di Canio.

1. VB
2. Di Canio
3. Bale

Bales is technically the best of the 3. Less time to react and a cleaner strike! and he plays for Spurs!

I thought of Zidane's volley at first but that was from a much kinder angle... Awesome strike by Bale.

I voted Di Canio but they're all great in their own ways. The pass for Di Canio's goal gives him the edge.

Van Basten's is different gravy, much tighter angle, and had to go over the keeper and back down again to score not put it to the side of him

See I think the build up to Bales is the best and it is a much more difficult strike. Di Canio's is the easiest to time, he is behind the ball and it is coming towards him rather than going past him.

Bale's is awesome but let's think about context. Us beating Stoke or Holland finally overcoming Germany in a major tournament. Tough to call

He just had to hit it back across the goal. Keeper should have done much better, Gomes would have saved it, nobody could have saved Bale's.

USSR wasn't it. Yes that is the reason that it is one of the greatest goals of all time, but just in terms of the volley which is best?

just watch how long the ball is in the air for Van Bastens. Sorry, I love the guy, but I could have hit that as clean as he did. btw, I can play a bit

I thought the volley was to beat Germany in the semi's. You're right though.

I still think the angle of Van Basten's was much harder so I did vote for it.

Di Canio's...it is not that easy an angle...and the other two had a foot on the ground to stabilize. If they had airshot it would have just looked a bit funny, if Di Canio had missed he would have looked like an overambitious boy-twat trying to show off in front of some really fit birds:wink:

But all three are excellent goals.

1) VB
2) Bale
3) di Canio

they're all really special goals but Van Basten's edges it, due to the angle and the fact it's a tough ask to beat the keeper (who's well positioned!) from there.

di Canio's

This is one of the best goals ever scored imo. It's a CL final, it's his weaker foot and the ball is so high in the air.

Of the 3 other, I'd say:

1. Van Basten
2. Bale
3. Di Canio

I thought the Danny Rose volley was better than the Bale one. Still a great volley mind. As was the Zenden one for Sunderland against us, albeit closer to goal.

The Van Basten one is the best of those 3 though.

Voted for Bale as I couldn't give a fuck about the other 2. Great goals though.
