There's far too much hatred for Bentley about, both on here and in the Lane.

He played well last night. Not amazing (I don't think anyone did tbh) but he hardly lost the ball, his crossing caused Fulham problems all night, and he was involved in both the goals.

If he were Niko people would be raving about his performance.

I did get frustrated at times with the lack of directness in his play and his tendency to overcomplicate things, but overall he did a good job and it was good to see the team play with some semblance of shape again.

Big shout-outs to Modric, Bale, Crouch and Wilson too.

For me there was no stand-out player. Modric or Bale might have just shaded it but any of those 5 could be justified as MOM.

The bold bits spot on, dont believe everything you read in the papers none of us really know what bentley is like, journos talk shit, even if bentley had scored 3 last night there would still be a few who would slate him:roll:

Bentley was at least trying in the game, so he gets a 9/10 for effort. But FFS - where is his skill, his crossing is about the same as Lennon's, he can't beat a man, his free kicks and corners were poor.

I'm not sure why he was ever worth the money we paid for him - form is one thing, but i don't think i've ever seen him show any real skill and flair in any game he's played for us.

I think what annoys me more, is that if we're looking for a closer replacement, playing style wise, for Lennon, then GDS should have been given the nod - rather than loaning him out.

The forty yarder against Arsenal? The way he opened his body to shoot against Liverpool last season (leading to the winner)?

I don't believe he was worth 15 million, but he has got something. He'd be helped by having an athletic full-back behind him, too.

People are way too harsh on him I think. Bentley has shown better glimpses than someone like GDS, yet people on here would drink his bath water given the chance.

When I left spurs tonight- Bentley was being awarded Man of the Match - now I am not sure which match they meant but it cannot have been the one I had just watched.

Perhaps I am just biased now but I just don't like him - never a simple ball through always a couple of fancy flicks that come off 1 in 10 times

MOM for me was bale

I'm yet to see the second half but in the first he and King were our best player. This guy is gifted, he has skills and he is a clever player as well. But his talent is wasted on the right, he has to be played in the middle of the park, he wants to run the show, he wants responsibility. I really hope he and Harry sort it out and he stays with us.
Really well? He reminds me of beckham, just so static, every time he gets the ball it's like he's taking a free kick. I wish he'd keep momentum going and hit a moving ball.

Modric just edged Bale for MOTM, both were fantastic but Modrics'assist was great and he almost scored
Couldnt agree more. Every time he gets the ball he

1: Stops.
2: Either rolls the ball foward with the sole of his boot to cross it or cuts inside to try and cross, or trys a fancy flick.

There is never any one-touch football (apart from the fancy flicks), or give-and-go, and he cannot take a man on either. If you stop him crossing, you stop him being effective.

For me Hudd edged it last night, especially with that new hair-do! But I was happier that there was no real stand-out performer, tbh. Most people in this thread have differing opinions on who should have won MOTM, but that's a great sign. It was a really cohesive, balanced team out there last night.

Loving the way we play through midfield at the moment, real hard and fast zippy passes.

He was never worth the £15m we paid for him and Lennon is definitely a better player but Bentley showed more to his game than just working hard last night.

His crossing was quality. His cross for the first goal caused havoc in the fulham defence and he set up a couple of nice headers for Palacios and Dawson, either of which could have resulted in a goal.

His free kicks are decent too. Yes his goal was fortunate but he struck it well and I think he made the right choice in going for goal.

Just a thought, but with Lennon out for up to another month, would it not make sense to keep Bentley playing.

In his last 2 appearances he has scored a free kick in each game.. surely thats worth it for another month..?

yeah. wasn't my MotM but he did well, especially playing first game in a while. i'd rather play a right midfielder on the right than jenas or kranjkar, much as i like them both. DB's much slower than aaron but at least with bale in the side we can skin them down the left, and there's crosses from both sides

Thats how I see at well mate.

Modric looked aweful in RM the other week, give Bentley a run, it's something he has never had. There could be a few reasons as to why he never had that run in his preferred position, but honestly, I think it is mostly down to the fact that in Lennon, he has had the premier leagues in form winger.

Bentley doesn't offer what Lennon does, but he does put a fucking mean ball into the mix, and he can take a free kick better than anyone else we have.

he can proably take a good pen too

if he can put a ball in a skip from 12 miles - he must be able to knock one in from 12 yards :)

I remember thinking that when he stepped up to take one in the CC final. :-|

He scored one goal and played the cross into Modric for the opener, for me he had a good game and should be kept in the side for the next game. He is our backup for Lennon, if he doesn't play when Lennon is injured then what exactly are we paying him for?

I was impressed with his workrate too, and he showed some passion with his celebration. Whether this was through joy for Spurs or for David Bentley is another question though.

good point - i take it he missed - can't remember - i remember o'hara's miss because of the emotion after missing out the year before

anyway even if bentley did miss - he looks like a player who should be able to take pens

wonder what his career record is like

What we got back through Huddlestone returning was an increased ability to keep possession. The way Bentley played tonight added to this team ability especially when he came inside during the second half linking well with Huddlestone and Modric. Like him or not the bloke is a skillful player who may just provide us the respite while Aaron is recovering. His deadball kicks are of a high quality but you always need people to get on the end of them.....Defoe's headed goals are as rare as rocking horse shit and Crouch is a very average header of the ball. DB could yet play a decent role in our season imo.

I don't his crossing was all that, it was decent at times, but when you have Crouch in the team, quality crossing should result in far more balls landing on the lanky ones head. IMO he only put in 4 or 5 top draw crosses all night - which would be the same as saying that Lennon only made 4 or 5 decent forward runs all night - these are the key parts to these players games.

His free kicks were poor IMO as were most of his corners. He had no other choice than to go for goal - otherwise leave it to Hudd or Bale to have a shot.

I'd like Bentley to be doing better, and that was his best performance for us for a while, but he gets a 7/10 with a + for effort in my books for the Fulham game.
