Arsene Wenger is advocating these be done away with.

:bs: the reason he whines about it is that players get injured during friendlies which explains why some of them tend to not give it so hard.

Wenger has got a whole season with with 50 or so games some of them against not so good teams, as say in the cup games, where he can afford to let second choice players on the pitch to check them out.

NT managers don't have that luxury, as a NT may have like 4-5 games per year (excluding Finals if they qualify) so friendlies have, are and will always be of importance for any NT. Managing NT is completely different type of animal, so Wenger's opinion has got no weight here. Instead he should speak out loud about the Eduardo case, and make sure things like it happen no longer. As, dare I say it, if Eduardo didn't get hurt then they might have won the game against Chelsea and had a better chance to win the title, or better chance in the CL. But he doesn't see that he sees the friendlies.

Of course Wenger is talking his book - he always does. But the fundamental point is that international friendlies are now a complete and utter waste of time. They are not a realistic preparation for competitive international football because players are doing their best to avoid injury and only turn up to brownnose the coach. The national FAs love them because they can charge ridiculous amounts to the corporates who don't care that it's a meaningless match because they're only there for the champers, prawn sandwiches and networking opportunities.

Personally, I would ban ALL international friendlies, apart from those in the run up to the finals of an international competition, such as the World Cup or European Championship. Because then the players are in camp for several weeks and are effectively a club side anyway.

he is a brilliant player, absolutely blinding first touch, etc, etc, but I am at a point in my life where i know what this fucking guy does in the summer is beyond my control.
seriously.
i cannot make it happen or not.
que serra serra...would love the geezer to stay, do not think if we want to keep ramos we can afford to let him go to another british club and all that, but at the end of the day, who fucking knows what this geezers going to do, or where his agent is going to steer him.
my GUT feeling is he'll give us one more year in exchange for a FAT paycheck, but really, who the fuck knows?
he can sya whatever to whoever and it means nothing really . if that judas campbell taught us anything it was PRECISELY how empty words can be...

I'm almost at the point where I feel like responding 'Don't know, don't care' to 'Will Berbatov stay?' threads.

The body language stuff is bollocks. A while back I suggested that anything short of Berba celebrating every goal by doing a couple of laps of the pitch twirling his shirt over his head before heading to the centre circle to lead massed choruses of 'Stand up if you hate the Arsenal' and 'My old man said be an Arsenal fan' would fail to persuade some of his commitment. I think we saw that he can drop the cool pose and go totally mental at Wembley.

If we hadn't beaten the Chavs, I'd be far less confident that he'd be here next season. If he was your normal thicko footballer, I'd also have doubts. But my instinct is the same as Steff's; I think the likelihood is that he will give us another season. After that, who knows?

And if he doesn't, we have Bent. It would, of course, be totally insane to suggest that Bent is on the same dimension skills-wise as Berba, but, given his head, he'll score at least as many goals. We'll just have to rely on CMs and wide men to provide the assists.

It'll all mudge out in t'wash.

Firstly, I should admit that I believe that Berbatov will leave in the summer. If he wants to win major trophies (ie. league titles and CL) then the likelihood is that it won't happen at Spurs.

But, he needs to bear in mind that as good a player as he is, there is a chance that if he moves to another club it may not work out for him. That team may not win anything either or he may not suit their style of play or he may not show any form for that team and find himself in the reserves or worse.

And before anyone else gets upset because they think that I've questioned his abilities, I should remind them that nothing is guaranteed in life. Maradona didn't play well for Barcelona. Veron was considered one of the best players in the world before he came to England. See also: Shevchenko at Chelsea, Cannavaro at Real and Riquelme at Barca.

In short, if he were to ask me to give a reason for him to stay at Spurs, I'd tell him that 'we already love you, and it works for you here. can you guarantee that it will be like that elsewhere?'

Ps. for those saying he's irreplaceable. No we couldn't get another player like him, but we could get someone just as effective.

Bulgarian fans, has there been bad publicity about Berba in his homeland recently? :snooty:

This article says he needs better PR.......by a PR Agent.

News Round Berbatov Totally Out of Control

Things round Berbatov are totally out of control. Everyone writes whatever he wants, Things should be controlled. A strategy is needed and faults to convert into effects, famous PR agent Silvia Nikolova comments in front of The Standart.
The lady used to work as a PR agent for many chalga stars in Bulgaria and believes that her experience would be in favor for forming the image of the most famous Bulgarian footballer in present days.
I heard that Berba's friends were dissatisfied with the fact he didn't answer their calls. I would advice him to call to a friend of his and to talk with him. After that this friend appears in the press occasionally and tells what Berbatov had shared with him.
To be good in something is not enough. This is the first thing, good PR agent is the second, Silvia revealed.

There are new publications every day, even if they repeat things we all know :D
I didn't like the part "he doesn't answer his friends' calls". Can you imagine how many people pretend to be his friends now? Any famous person has a few friends, REAL friends, who 1)will not tell something like this to the media and 2)will know when to call him
When someone becomes famous, the number of his friends drastically increases?!

Berbatov would just add that extra dimension to their game.

if United had signed Berbatov & Hutton they would be absolutely incredible.

Has anyone told you recently that you are great?

ManYoo's style is unique and although Berbatov is obviously a great player, I don't think his style would add anything to ManYoo's team.

Also, isn't Gary Neville the best RB in the EPL?

he's a great RB, but dunno if you noticed the fact that he's not played all season and has since had a further set back. They have an average CB covering their RB position.

Sometimes United can be found struggling with getting the ball into the box in the air, a prime example would be against Bolton earlier in the season, and Man City aswell, Berbatov would've solved those problems.

Wes Brown is better than average; and he is also a RB.

I can see your point, but could Berbs and Rooney play together?

Yea, they'd be an amazing partership, Keane has similarities to Rooney in some ways.

Wes Brown is a half decent CB, he's always been a CB, he plays RB when they have nobody else & he's not very good there. Trust me I've watched Man Utd like a supporter since I was born.

Wes Brown isn't average/half decent; and I too have watched ManYoo a lot as they are the only team in the top 4 that I like to win. He is vastly underrated and I would have him at WHL in a heart beat.

An average CB is someone like Taylor for Birmingham City or a Blackburn CB. Wes Brown has played for his country and the biggest club in the world at both RB and CB for the past 10 years.

You're right, he has, and yet they still felt they've needed to buy the like of Ferdinand and Vidic when he's been on the fringes for years, because he's decent and nothing more.

So true, Gaby. Plus he spent time with his close friend from his CSKA days the night of the Award ceremony.

I was just surprised to see this kind of trashy tabloid journalism in Bulgaria too. Jealous people are everywhere I guess.

my thinking is at the moment Utd wouldn't need/want to pay £25m+ for Berbs - which is good for us - unfortunately there are likely to be other top clubs who will - but time will tell etc
