Most of us are in agreement that we at least need to know what our best first XI is...

What's yours? I have no idea... I think I would like to see something like.

I would have Walker aiming to overlap, allowing Lamela to come inside, but I would try and get him to stretch that side of the pitch as much as possible. For me, Lamela is far more accomplished at cutting inside and shooting than Townsend, as he so proved at Roma last season. Townsend and Rose should be looking to stretch the right back and right midfielder as much as possible, with Townsend looking to cross balls in for Soldado and Dembele, who I always felt could contribute goals by arriving late in the box a la Lampard (he's hardly small), Paulinho will also do well in this role.

I really don't know, I've probably been playing far too much Football Manager.

Best thing about this is that it can morph into 4-2-3-1, 4-3-2-1 & 4-1-4-1 very easily.

Hell, if we had more than a few centre backs I'd love to see us try a 3-5-2. It'd be interesting, if nothing else.

We need to get the right mix though the positions of the 3 behind the striker are very important.

I would like to see something like this. Eriksen playing a bit deeper, and Lamela cutting in with Walker on the over lap. Townsend can use both feet but would go down the line more than cutting in.

Sherwood is influential in the youth department and which plays 4-3-3. People need to stop getting confused between the midfielder and the manager of Sherwood.

Exactly. Not sure why 4-2-3-1 is some accursed thing, it's one of the best formations in the world - shown by the way Dortmund, Arsenal, Chelsea, City, Bayern and, at our most successful time in the past five years, we used it.
