I still haven't seen any of the game but I heard it on the radio.
From what I heard the first half wasn't the abysmal performance we saw on Wednesday, it was better and we probably ought not to have been one down at half time but it still wasn't good enough, we have to sort it out.
I thought we moved the ball quicker first half than v Sporting (though we could hardly have done so more slowly) and progressed it to the sort of areas that we should have created more chances from. The problem was that our delivery into the box was so, so poor. We rarely beat the first man from open play or a dead ball.

The goal they scored was because we lost it while high up the pitch and got caught out. That can happen and I'd prefer to run that risk than spend 75 minutes on the edge of our own box.

Look, for example, I think Lloris’s kicking/distribution is terrible and has been for a long time, I think Dier lacks focus so always has a mistake in him, I think Emerson is very unsuited to the WB role in a Conte team, I think Sanchez is too prone to panic when put under pressure. I could go on. Other people may disagree with my opinions of different players and that’s fine.
Nevertheless I don’t go in the Match day thread telling everyone how they are going to cost us the game and while I will criticize them and others when they make an error I don’t hurl abuse at them and say they should never play for Tottenham again because they’re not even good enough for a League 2 side.
The manager picks the players and I go on the assumption that he’s sees in training that they can do a job for him. I also presume that they are doing their best but sometimes people have bad days at work. We all want our team to do well but sometimes it doesn’t go the way we’d like it to which is VERY frustrating but I fail to see how abusing players, who you should presume are doing their best and are almost certainly as frustrated as you are about a bad result, is very helpful.

Such a good post. Really uncomfortable seeing people call another human being useless for 90 minutes.

Yesterday was a great case study for closing match day threads. I missed the game so just scrolled through the pages… yikes!

Generally I give match day threads a wide berth until the game has finished, especially if I’m watching the match live, so many knee jerk comments & vitriol which just cause so much bad feeling.

Good post DenverSpur however I would add that while the manager picks the players it is more to do with those he has available to pick from rather than the assumption (your word - I would say you need belief /confidence in your players) they can do a job for him. IMHO if Conte was honest about how many players he thinks we need to replace it would be around half the squad, If (big IF) we are serious about winning titles.

Lol. Blaming Royale for those goals is taking the hate to ridiculous levels. First goal he was high and wide as is his job as an attacking RWB - he was never going to get back and it's ridiculous to suggets he should have.

And just how many RB's do you expect o beat Kieffer Moore for strength and height? Lol

Anyway - for anyone not blindly dogpiling Emerson - it is a concern that we are getting roasted consistently down that left hand side. When teams break on us there they get little or no resistance. It's a concern.
When the ball is first crossed for the second goal, Emerson is goal side of Moore but decides to stand his ground (I assume in an attempt to block him off) had Emerson attacked the ball instead he had the advantage in getting to it first. It's not a crime, it's a lesson to learn from perhaps. I bet Conte and staff are dissecting it and will review it with the players in an attempt to help them in future situations.

Bet it was fun in here at half-time yesterday. :nailbiting:
Was out and about yesterday with my son in Blackpool and was dipping in to this thread during the match while he was on some of the rides.....some of the nonsense written in here is laughable and the level of abuse directed to certain players is unforgiveable.

I agree with the suggestion that certain people need to be given time outs as a warning.

In addition, some people seize on any event or pattern of play, or mistake, or goal conceded- to push their agenda (ie. "the team is utter shit, Conte is a waste of space, I hate his tactics, I want him him fired, I want attractive attacking football AT ALL TIMES and I WANT POCH back" etc etc ) Utter nonsense and extremely tedious.

I'm not trying to police debate at all and Conte is not immune from criticism. However getting behind the manager and the team has never been more important. Conte offers us by far the best chance of silverware we have had in years and is likely to be far more successful than Poch at this club when properly backed. Its funny that the person that some were calling for as the saviour prior to the Conte appointment (Graham bloody Potter!!) looked utterly clueless yesterday as his team were stuffed. Will be surprised if he is there next season.

Trust the process. Its clear the manager will get 2 or 3 new signings in January and we have key attacking players due to come back from injury. The remaining weaker players will be shifted tis coming summer and we will get stronger and stronger and will start to turn over more teams!

I watched the game last night on Sky where you get 30 mins of the match which is a lot better than MOTD's 5 min highlights and I thought we played well even in the first half. We had our moments in the first 45 and played the last 45 in a manner we should be playing through out the whole 90 mins. It shows we can play quick attacking football and I hope Conte sees what we are capable of if given their head. Playing like that we will win more than we lose imo and I want to see us playing that way against Liverpool.
It was a good watch yes there were mistakes especially in defence but to me it was one of our best games of the season. I know being 2-0 down and winning 3-2 makes it an exciting game but it was in the manner that we won that was encouraging. More of this please.

Clearly, if what we've all heard is true about the players bearing the responsibility for failing to perform at full speed in our first halves this season, then some of them are obviously not good enough for us and should be shifted out ASAP and upgraded. We can't have players here who won't start games with any intensity, passion, aggression, far greater ball retention or pace. That's just not good enough.

Conte is definitely serious about winning titles but he has been deadly honest with us all along, when he says it'll take time and a good few windows to get the players in which he feels are going to be crucial to us upgrading ourselves into genuine title contenders. The club has to back him and I thank God, as he said in his recent presser, he's very happy here with us, which means to me (reading between the lines) that the club does actually share his ambition and will back him all the way with the necessary finance as far as they can.

I think he greatly appreciates honesty and I believe that's exactly how the club are treating him. There are people out there who claim the club has no ambition but we all know that's bollocks. If it were true we'd never have brought him in in the first place.

Patience grasshoppers, patience. ?‍♂️

I agree with what you say and it isn’t necessary. I try and keep it together when watching, no matter how frustrating. I do feel the club has to take some responsibility, the players getting most of the flack are ones that really shouldn’t be in our team/squad. The club has failed to invest and refresh us and that’s why we are in this position.

Conte imo is overachieving with what he has and I fully believe better football will come once he gets his own players. We started it in the summer and we have a long way to go.

"Unreliable in defence"

When?

I'll wait.
Evidently, you didn't watch him playing last season. I saw him a couple of times on loan at Forest for a full game's worth. He was great to watch and scared the shit out of opposition defences, but was chronically caught out of position and didn't have a feel for when to track back.

It will come. He's obviously extremely talented and he has a coach who knows how to teach that kind of thing. When he can function as part of a team, he'll get playing time. Like Bryan Gil.

The Mods have an impossible job dealing with the Match day threads. Some folk seem to be out of control.

Bournemouth were battered from pillar to post in the second half last weekend at home to Spurs, conceding 19 corners across the 90 minutes. That's the most conceded in a Premier League game since Opta started collecting the data in 2010.
