Aaaaaand that's where the similarities end.
Not really. I'm not an expert on them but apparently they also play a pressing game like us (but probably more focused on counter-attacks). So the team itself is similar in that respect as well.

Can anyone explain to me why German teams have the team name where the fucking player name should be on the back of their shirts, it's so bloody annoying. Like we need to know what the name of their team is ? Surely this must piss off German commentators too ? Why has no one pointed out the idiocy of this policy ?

Leipzig started well, then shot themselves in the foot, especially with the second goal. The red card killed the game. Awful challenge... if he had just clipped his heels he would of got a yellow.

To be fair commentators and fans survived just fine for years before names were introduced on the back of shirts, does it really matter? Seems like names on shirts are more for marketing and shirt sales purposes than anything else

Interesting to see Bayer Leverkusen 18 points off the top down in 9th while completely controlling us for a game and a half in the CL, quite interested to see how they do against Ath Madrid

Even Dortmund are struggling in the league and they've bested Real this year, the German league is looking very strong right now

Personally, I like to put a name to some strange faces that I'm not always familiar with.

Happens every year to English clubs in Europe. Amazing how far a bit of tactical application and coaching can go isn't it ?

I get that - but it's not exactly difficult to get the name from their squad number, is it?

What if you're watching it live or you don't have or want to keep looking up stuff on the internet ? Still don't see the logic of putting names on shirts but making it almost impossible to read them and replacing it with the bloody team.

I think if you're watching it live (unless your eyesight is way better than mine or you get much better seats than I do) it's pretty difficult to read the names on the shirts anyway

And now days everyone has a phone connected to the Internet and a Google search takes 10 seconds - if you can't be bothered to do that it probably doesn't mean that much to you anyway

I don't know what they have the team name on the shirt, I suppose it's part of their marketing strategy over there

I'll give you a scenario that happens with me a lot. I'm watching a Bundesliga game that I've recorded, I see a player do something good and I think "who the fuck was that" but I can't look it up because ad soon ad I go on the internet I'll see the score.

Now stop arguing. It's illogical and it's stupid. Players names are on the back of their shirts so we can identify them, it defeats the object if you place them where you can't bloody read them!

Why are you so arrogant as to suggest my opinion/side of the argument is too stupid and illogical to be worthy of your very discussion?

If you didn't want to discuss/argue the point the why exactly did you even bother to reply to it?

I really don't think having names on the back of shirt is a big deal - I dare say the millions of german fans watching their teams play week in week out think it's big deal either

As i said before the epl era there were no names on shirts and I nor you I doubt had any issue identifying players

If you're watching a random game as I said you can search Google on your phone in 10 seconds or god forid listen to the name when the commentators say it on tv while you watch

I personally don't see why what is on the back of german teams shirts matters at all to you but I certainly wouldn't be as arrogant or condescending as to label you or your views stupid or illogical just because you disagree with me

I wasn't calling you stupid, I was calling the names on shirts things stupid. I gave you a good example of why it's annoying, and it's obviously more an issue for other, non German, global viewers who aren't more familiar with the Bundesliga.

I tried to Google why they did it but produced no results only why they have numbers in their names turned up

Im assuming they must have a reason for it

To be fair I am not a student of the game in the same way you are so these issues are pretty meaningless to me. While you study a game in depth and think of tactical analysis for players and teams I'm usually drinking and talking during games

Although I can possibly relate to what you're saying if I apply the same logic to a post I made in the he boxing thread about my not wanting to go to Wembley for the AJ fight after having watched Froch Groves there

I like to study the finer points of combat sports and going to Wembley far from the ring makes that impossible and therefore frustrating to me probably in the same way the football shirt thing does to you

And especially as boxing died as sport sometime around the early mid nineties anyway.

Coincidentally, one the shittest fights I ever saw was live at Wembley. Frank Bruno verses some massively overweight American with a perm (Scott LeDoux I think) in 1983/4. Mark Kaylor (West Ham tosser) was on the undercard, along with some other b list faces of the time.
