Most of what you say I agree with, but as Man Ure will, probably win the PL, it doesn't matter to us if they win the CL, other than I believe that a part of the calculation of the points that each club are given in working out their european standings is how their country fares in Euro competitions. It may, therefore, be in our interest if Man Ure were to win the CL. Someone amongst you clever gits please put me straight! :D

England are pretty solid in their coefficient standing snugly poised between Germany and Spain. The threat would be a drop from 2nd to 3rd but for that to happen it will take years. England had by their standards a poor coefficient last year and it was still equal to Germany's in 2nd place. Right now with this years numbers plugged in, Germany has a 1.75 advantage but still trail England by a little over 3 points for the 5 year tally that is used to allocate spots in competition. So there is little worry for England.

And let's remember, this is calculating for only a drop to 3rd, which would mean no difference in allocations of spots.

The real threat is falling out of the top 3, like Italy did a few years back. But Italy hasn't beaten England in points in a long time - I believe 2006 was the last time and it was by a point.

And while England will lose Arsenal from the Champions League, Italy could lose Milan and Germany Schalke tomorrow. Regardless, what is the an untapped gold mine for England when it comes to the coefficient is the Europa where there are still four clubs. People underestimate it. But Germany used that competition to overtake Italy and it's why Spain is ahead of England now. England still has four sides (Liverpool being in the worse condition with a 2-0 away leg) while Italy has 3 (Napoli lost their home leg 3-0 and Lazio drew Gladbach 3-3) and Germany has 4 (aside from Gladbach, Leverkusen drew 1-1 home to Genk, Hannover lost 3-1 at Anzi and Stuttgart lost 1-0 at home). So there is where England could offset Germany and keep ahead of Italy.

Granted if United were to lose to Real Madrid and Bayern were to face BVB in the final, that would negate any Europa points by that multiplier that England has used for a decade to offset its poor Europa record.

So in short, when we win the Europa League, we will ensure that England stays in 2nd for a long time to come. :)

Oh and in short, without my flights of fancy, England are ages away from a drop to 4th. So worry not.

Yippee ! The Filth have to win by 3 clear goals in Germany to go through !!!

Not quite, but in reality as good as. If Arse were to win 4 - 2 it would be an aggregate of 5 - 5 but they would go through on the away goals rule. If it were a higher aggregate score (with a 2 goal difference) the same applies I won't say anymore 'cause I really don't want to tempt that fickle female fate! :cautious:

EDIT: FECK too late! :)

It is tee'd up for a Chelsea style recovery, isn't it? If they fire Wenger in the morning then I say yes and then we had better get our skates on to overtake Chelsea

I haven't read the entire thread, so I imagie someone else has made this point, but its not likely. Chelsea had a very good squad and underachieved in the league last year, but they always had the talent to win big. I dont think you can say that about Arsenal.

Still, even if there was nothing between us, my point remains (y) Let's be realistic here it would be rare to find one of us fans that generally believed we could win the CL this season if we were in it

Ever since Liverpool won the champions league with such a poor team, I've thought if we are in it, we could possibly win it. Our team when we were last in the champions league had better players than the Liverpool side who won it.

We did have Crouch, Corluka, and Gomes, so not sure about having better players

Winning with inferior players in the CL almost always comes down to a well organised defence and someone to put the ball in the net.

No way could we have pulled off a victory against Barca over 2 legs. Our defence would have capitulated under such pressure.
