Before the match yesterday on the bbc

"Tottenham's 3-0 win at Wembley has changed that picture though with Spurs now given a 93% chance of reaching the quarter-finals. Manchester City, Real Madrid and Paris St-Germain are the only teams with a higher chance than Spurs of a place in the last eight."
What made me laugh was how quite a few spurs supporters were saying about a lack of media coverage from our beloved bbc yesterday yet today from about 7pm the main news headline on their website was can Man U turn their deficit over.
Anyone who says we don’t get ‘as favourable’ media exposure is probably a media darling or mike dean.

Totally agree. The ref's need to grow some balls and OWN the mantra "clear and obvious".

Except once that happens it'll be open to accusations of bias.

Really difficult. Perhaps look at how the NFL have handled this? But even then they missed a massive howler in the recent playoffs
If you are talking the PI that wasnt called its not reviewable.

I watched that match and you have to give it to them - they just don't give up. Whatever the future brings for OGS at Man Utd, he really has every player playing for that shirt. It's remarkable. Particularly with their injuries and respect to them for going to Paris and making it happen.

Initial contact/foul was outside the area. Not a penalty but would have been a red card.

My point is it was never reviewed at all. Why?

No United player appealed for the handball. But it gets automatically reviewed. Son gets bundled over - we all appeal. Ref never summoned to question his decision.

Basically VAR = if it hits your arm in the box = penalty.

That shot was going so high and wide if it went in deflected off his arm it would have been awarded as an own goal!

What's more ridiculous is the utterly ambiguous or non existence of protocol that decides when VAR is used in the first place. Surely this is the main issue of contention that all the pea brains on every pundit panel have failed to bring up as a matter of discussion. As I see it, in it's current form, VAR makes it even easier to fix games in a certain direction.

I'm waiting for a meme of Ferguson pressing the "VAR activation" button like a red faced maniac.

Seriously, VAR should be initiated by coach's challenges, which are limited and thus used wisely, just as it is in NFL, cricket etc. as well as for absolutely obvious and clear refereeing/ linesman blunders.

Lastly, some rules in football need to be reconsidered, because a penalty awarded for a "foul" in the box is often a totally disproportionate reward, especially with ball to hand.

Has there been an occasion the ref has gone to check screen and not given pen? Because that's my issue. Seems as though once ref goes over he feels he has to give it because effectively it means the other refs on panel think it's a pen.

It happened at least three times in the World Cup that I can remember. (Sweden : Mexico, Morocco : Iran, and Ronaldo getting a yellow for the elbow).
Also happened twice last week in MLS (even though one was pretty clearly a PK).

That was a penalty last night all day long.
Son’s one, slight knock in the back outside the box.
That was some serious result from United last night, lots of first 11 injuries as well.

Fair play

They scored from 2 mistakes and a BS pen call, don't think they deserve that much praise tbh - PSG should have been home and dry.

PSG are just serial legends, they dominant their league and aren't used to playing high intensity matches and holding onto slender leads, you could sense the nerves in the stadium all evening and that transcends onto the players, they bottled it. Not even we're capable of that :D

You can only be their buddy for so long. We'll see what happens when hard times come, because they always do.

It's true. The project is (arguably) flawed because they really have no competition at all in Ligue 1. In Europe they are total failures (relative to their owners' aspirations)

FIVE articles on BBC Sport this morning - "Epic Comeback", "Famous Comeback", "Sensational Comeback", "Neymar says Penalty a disgrace" and "Ole with Cantona and Ferg".

Five separate articles. For a game they won because of VAR and were never behind on the night.

I think he will get the job but I don’t think they should give it to him now, as it could affect performances. The players might want him now to get the job and are fighting for him. Once he’s given it the performance level could slacken off.
