I would rather let Levy save the club 3m and cost us a week. He is doing his thing. If it is going to get done, it will. Transfers take time. We are not City or Chelsea; we have limited funds.

I would rather Levy maintains his prudent business practices as well, but I can't help the anxiety in wanting to get this done ASAP. It's almost as "if we don't take advantage now, we'll lose our chance" type thing.

It seems like there's a third kind of deal emerging as well - the release clause. I've been impressed with the way we've moved quickly to bring in players like Dembele and Paulinho when the selling club is pretty much taken out of the equation.

Except we didn't sign Dembele until about 3 days before the end of last summers window.
Perhaps that was the moment of realisation for Levy when it comes to release clauses.
"You, you mean I can just buy them, no bartering? Why had non one told me this until now!"

He is doing his thing? His thing has already cost us villa, if he hadn't have messed around he would have signed for us before Madrid made their move. Villa himself has said Madrid did more in three days than we did in months.
If we want benteke then we need to give villa what they want, they are not going to cave in at the last minute, they don't need to he has 3 years left on his contract.
The reality is we will have to pay over the odds, to think we can get someone who is 22 and scored 19 league goals for what we want to pay is stupid. Lambert strikes me as the sort of man who will dig his heels in if we mess them around. We need to stop penny pinching and sign him soon and get him working with AVB and the team.

Don't be daft, Villa himself said he just decided to stay in Spain and would otherwise have joined us. Nothing to do with money or delay.

Villa said we offered more money. What more did Atletico Madrid do in those 3 days, a hand job?

It's snoozing Spurs' own fault my transfer didn't happen claims David Villa

"It's true the idea was for me to go to the Premier League, but then Atletico Madrid did more in three days than others did in months"

I dunno if the context is being maniuplated for their story but they are quoting Villa directly - I think A Madrid having CL and being in Spain were major factors but it really does sound that we didn't do enough to get him to sign if you read what he himself said (its hard to question the context of him directly saying Madrid did more in 3 days than others did in months)

We have to pay over the odds? We have to pay more than he is worth, is that what you are saying?

And what is it exactly we want to pay by the way?

Finally, do you think Lambert is making th decisions on the amount he goes for..... ?

Yes we will have to pay more than he is worth, if you want another premier league clubs best player and top scorer then yes.
I think Lambert has a big say, not as big as Lerner of course but I think Lerner will back lamberts judgement.

No my cup is not half empty, I happen to think we are not far off being a bloody good team and winning trophies.
However I do think we need to be more positive in the transfer market, if we want a player get it done as soon as we can, if that means paying more to get who we want then so be it. If we win something next season and get in the champions league the extra spent now will be irrelevant.

We'd be ruined in no time if we took that approach. We are not talking about pinching pennies here. We are talking about millions of pounds. Millions. Lots and lots of zeroes. No business can be sustainable if it just ignores opportunities to save a million pounds.

I disagree on Lambert. No manager in today's football has much say when it comes to the valuation of players.

And if we don't? We only made £400k profit according to the last financials. Then do we start selling players? Fall down the league?

Look at Deportivo. They won La Liga, got to the semis of the CL. Then they didn't get into CL and started selling players. Now they have been relegated, may even be relegated again cause their finances are in disarray, and will probably go out of existence within the next couple of years.

I take your point, but I think to take the next step up there comes a point where we need to decide if we take a gamble or not. I don't mean spend like a drunken sailor I mean pay (for example) 5million more for benteke, I think his goals would get us in the champions league, then the extra spent has more than played for itself.

Or closer to home - Leeds. ...

I don't think any Spurs fan will tell you that we don't need to gamble at some point if we really want to try and win things, however there still needs to be some method in the madness. Buying Benteke is a gamble, albeit a calculated one, but we will all agree this is the type of gamble we should be making. The extra 5 million on Benteke is massive though and potentially could be the difference between genius and madness.
