He had a disappointing last half a season with us when he’d had enough and wanted to leave for Spain but neither of the Spanish giants bid for him. Yeah he was disappointing then but the season before he was fine. I swear people in this country seem to have such short memories. I blame too much YouTube.

I am not in the medical field myself but if you think back just the year or so prior to Christian leaving he was suffering a mystery ailment that was affecting his performance on the field. Fast forward a year or so and he suffers a cardiac event on the field and nearly dies. Related? Maybe or maybe not but he was playing well at Brentford and maybe his overall health has returned?

Also, the whole squad was disappointing for the last 12 months Eriksen was here, he just took most of the heat because of his contract running down. The last third of 2019 we were in genuine relegation form, 11 points from 12 games, papered over by moments of magic in the CL. And we all remember how Poch’s fated final season went. In hindsight Eriksen’s performances dipping was consistent with the trajectory of the team, but at the time we all just wanted someone to blame and to believe it could be fixed.

I recall people seriously trying to suggest that he “didn’t try” during the CL final, arguably the biggest game of his entire career, because he was grumpy about his contract situation.

Just bring Christian back. He has the gifts to help us chisel out wins in those tricky games where we are struggling to break defensive teams down with his cute through balls, set piece delivery and shooting from distance.

If I'm Eriksen I'm staying at Brentford. They're the ones who gave him his chance after the heart issues.

Breaking their wage structure would be them paying over £30k pw I doubt Brentford will be able to sustain that amount on the long term contract they are supposedly offering him.
Disagree. Pl money is transformative in that regard, as long as they stay up they could even pay him 300k a week and be okay, whether that's a good investment of money is another question.

Personally I don’t see them staying up next year, even with Christian, but we will see

I personally do, but if they don't I'm sure he wouldnt be exactly a hard asset to get rid of, similarly they will get parachute payments that will probably cover the length of his contract.

I mean Brentford are perfectly able to keep Eriksen and pay him well with no issues, it's more a question if Eriksen will want to stay. Most clubs have a upper wage limit because if you inflate wages for one player other players tend to want a raise as well, and it can quickly get out of hand, but with Eriksen they can probably get away with paying him exceptionally more than the others.

To be fair, I think that is a silly basis to make an important decision.

But, given that Eriksen will want to be at full fitness for the WC - Brentford probably offer him the clearest route to starters minutes this fall. I can see that influencing his decision more than sentimental reasons for Spurs or Brentford.

It's a mutual understanding on both parties when they agreed on the short-term contract (yes they gave him the chance but he also did his job very well there) and I really don't think he will be of any fault or face resentment from Brentford if he does choose to leave.

I don't think he would either, but I sort of agree with the yid on this one. It was a hell of a punt Brentford took on him. He could choose to repay their faith by staying.

Even if Eriksen did want to rejoin Spurs, I still think he’s the decent type that would fully consider Brentford’s offer and not wish to be seen to dismiss it out of hand.

I Wouldn't. It was beneficial to both parties and he's 30, so might only have 3-5 years left at the top level. He should go to a club that challenges while he can still play. Depends on his ambition at this point.

I think you guys are overthinking this. He nearly died on the pitch. It’s unlikely he is thinking 3-5 years from now.

The next big event on his horizon is the WC. He will be thinking along the lines of what opportunity gives me the best chance to be selected and be fit. He might decide that higher expectations at Spurs is a better way to prepare, or he might decide on a different option. But I’ll be shocked if he is thinking beyond next season, let alone 3-5 years from now.

No way Denmark don’t select him if he’s fit IMO.
This could well be the last crack he gets with a CL club, lots of friends still at the club, must be a very tempting offer.

Right, but what if he is playing 15-20 minutes off the bench? Will he be fit to start for Denmark one week later?

I am not guessing where Eriksen will end up, but given his history I think he has a much shorter horizon, and will be looking to maximize that opportunity. It could well be at Spurs.
