The paradox with all this is that while we were operating as a top 5/6, and occasionally top 4, the wage budget would have been what you would have expected.
However, we've now 2 seasons consecutively, established our selves (open to debate if you like) as a top 4 side, and even dare I say, a title contended. Yet the wage budget hasn't proportionally improved with our position/status in the league.
I'm my opinion, we cannot sustain the position we are without offering a competitive salary to the players we currently have in the squad, or any new additions we want to make.
We've either got to accept that our wage ceiling is what it is and lose players to bigger salaries elsewhere, or accept that we'll flirt with occasional forays into the top 4 and have our best players cherry picked by our rivals who pay more. Or pay the going rate for the quality of players we have, and for a club of this status.
There's no 4th way as far as I can see.
