The squad could do with more players like Villa proven winners who train and play at a consistenltly high level, age shouldn't matter with players like him.

Err Guys yesterdays sport has two people in the race for Villa's signature and it seems at the moment according to them that it is between us and Athletico Madrid. They have CL but we have the Premier league and they say apparently AVB is a fan and keen to get him. I would love him as our wide man/striker option or even our lone man up front.

Also people complaining about the transfer fee too high for a 31 year old, the spanish press believe the fee they want to be around €12million which is about £10million. Only £4million more than Dempsey LOL.

David Villa would pull in a few shirt sales also no? Klinsmann was no spring chicken when we signed him, but by god he was good for us.

I still think it is a pipe dream though.

It looks as though Barca are planning a fairly large clearout this summer, with Victor Valdes, Eric Abidal, David Villa, Ibrahim Afellay, Jonathan Dos Santos, Isaac Cuenca and Andreas Fontas all expected to leave.

Am I the only person who would love us to try for Afellay again?

No, you're not ;)

The only downside with Afellay is his injury record, and I believe he's currently out of action injured while on loan. That said, he should be pretty cheap and if he can stay fit he'd be a steal. Definite upgrade on Lennon IMO, and if we play him down the left which is his preferred position then that allows Bale more freedom to play through the middle.

Anyway I'm going off topic a bit here!

I'd be very cautious, he was injury prone in Holland and missed quite a lot of playing time particulkarly when younger, he missed loads for Barca and he hasn't played much at Schalke. He was undoubtedly a skilful player but at 27 with his injury record I think I'd swerve

I will be honest and have never been WOW about him, He was awsome against us (Norn Ire) for Holland but thats not saying much TBH.

Villa was my favorite player from about 05-09...I'll just say, he's not nearly good enough anymore. Sorry.

Was world class at Valencia, is very average at Barcelona, and not gonna get better as he ages, especially going to a faster paced league.

I think, to be fair, it's because he's at Barcelona and surrounded by world class players. VDV looked poor at Real but was awesome for us and Hamburg. So many players have had this problem. Big fish/small pond comes to mind. At a Valencia sized club (which I guess we are in a lot of respects) he could look world class again.

Guys, it's David Villa.. If we had him this season, we'd have blown Chelsea and the scum away weeks back. . Get him on a 2 year deal, and a younger guy too, and what a player to have.. Is there anything he hasn't won?? Think about it.. It's perfect for us.

He is still a great striker, plus our academy can benefit from having a Euro and World Cup winner around.
I'm on board, shame I'm also a little bit pessimistic about actually getting him.

If we'd signed him in January, our CL place would be a done deal by now, more than recouping his value.

I don't understand where the "risk" is involved in signing David sodding Villa. There's far more risk in signing Leandro or Benteke. It's really very simple. HE IS DAVID SODDING VILLA.

Nothing is guaranteed. Villa might have come over and broke his leg, he might not have settled etc..

LOL, so because we are 4th in the league you wouldnt sign a Klinsmann? You're argument really is running out of steam now.

We signed Klinsmann during Sugars tenure and his transfer policy was obviously so great it had us hovering around mediocrity for the best part of a decade.

Look, it's not an argument, it's a fact. We have a transfer policy of buying young talent with potential because we can't afford to throw money away on waining superstars.

You might not agree with my reasoning but unluckily for you it seems Dan Levy does and something tells me he is better business man than you - look at where we are in the league.

I honestly would mind giving villa 3 or 4 year contract as although he may be getting old and will get slower, his finishing ability would be useful regardless of his age. Ade or defoe dont compare to his finishing ability and that commodity cant always be learnt. He could even be our Larsson, in his later years whilst still be able to do a job now.

Err we spent £4mill less on Dempsey and he was only given a 3 year contract, same for parker but longer contract. We also signed a couple oldies lately on low wages. Buying a player who has close to a 1 goal in 2 games on the wing sounds like it is great business and the added exposure of a spanish star in our team which is something I am sure he will consider. I wouldnt call him a waining superstar as he is only 31 and was a world class player beyond our reach last season

We can argue the toss on this until we're blue in the face but i'm pretty sure Levys transfer policy matches what I have outlined.

No, it's the same as where he used to shine with Spain and now hardly gets a good touch. He's just not as good anymore. Trust me. I love the guy, would buy a Spurs kit with his name on it in seconds, but he's not good enough anymore. He's also one where I'm not sure how we'd pay for his wages.
