If we sell Dawson we simply must be far down the line with his replacement. Preseason starts Friday.

We need to go into the season with 5 centrebacks with our injury record in that position so we have to buy 2 centrebacks this summer. It will be like going into the season without a proper left back. Who'd do that?!?!

Isn't the point of selling Kaboul to buy a less injury prone CB?

The role of 5th, or even 4th CB in a squad is unappealing for a player.

Imagine being Steven Caulker and being sold the role of 5th choice CB back at Spurs.

The answer isn't stockpiling players ok players just in case, who rot, don't play, and loose motivation. We've done that for years.

The answer is surely having fewer, more versatile defenders, who are less injury prone, and better - then paying them more.

They'll also stay match fit, and be more integrated, committed, and motivated.

One of our 4 full backs should be able to play 5th CB in emergency. And/or one of our midfielders.

Walker and Fryers can play CB

We're told Walker could at Sheffield United in the Championship, but I'd be terrified to see him there in the Prem.

Fryers is an interesting case as is Capoue mentioned above.

Fryers would be a handy 5th choice CB option, whilst covering 3rd choice LB. But that's a rubbish role for his career, wasting a crucial season to develop, thereby he won't ever become useful for us.

So he really needs a more prominent role to get some minutes and develop.

ie 2nd choice LB / 5th choice CB. or 4th choice CB, 3rd choice LB.

What we can't have is 4 CBs who can only play CB. 4 FBs the same, 2 DMs etc.

You just end up with frozen out, bored footballers, on huge money, loosing value.

Then a couple of injuries and your cover lets you down - either rusty or disaffected.

Mourinho and Fergie always nailed it with the structure of their squads. Not too big, and every player has a role or number of roles to get their minutes.

Rather than waiting for an injury that may or may not happen.

Or a youth player.

I'd really be shitting myself if Walker had to play CB. Fryers I've seen do a decent job filling in there, but I'd hate to imagine Walker struggling to keep a defensive line and losing the striker he's meant to be marking.

I'd like to see Dawson replaced by Micah Richards. Only around 4-5mil. RB CB always liked the way he played. Bale said its was his toughest premier league opponent.

He was absolute shite apart from 1 game.

Capoue, who was decent there in two games, but was poor in the thrashing at Anfield with zero midfield hold ahead of him was "absolute shite" at his less favored position, but Paulinho deserves more of your patience after 37 games in his favored position and more minutes played than any of the other signings?

Although Dawson leaving might be logical - he's unlikely to fit Pochettino's system, he's aging and he'd probably be at best 3rd choice - but the fact that he wants to stay is admirable. He might not be the best player we have or have had but at least he's cares about the club when most of the squad appear ambivalent at best. We're quick to bemoan loyalty when a player angles for a move to another club but when one of ours actually wants to stay and fight for his place everyone wants to kick him out anyway.

I meant he was poor at CB (I was at the C1C game vs West Ham and he really was bad). However, he was immense before his injury IN MIDFIELD, and if you look at my previous posts, I would start him next season alongside Paulinho. Of course he deserves as much patience, he just shouldn't play at CB. Nice try though.
