Defoe's Contribution

After last night's game, can anyone in their right mind say that Defoe is a one-trick pony, a player who only knows how to shift and shoot and doesn't contribute anything else to the team's overall game? Absolutely creazy if people still say that. His running to create space for Bale for the 2nd goal, and his wonderful vision to pass to bale for the 3rd goal were simply marvelous and very very "team-contributing". I don't knw what else he needs to do to shut up the doubters. True, he has his limitations, but so does Bale and so does everyone else, so give him his full credit because he has been magnificent for us this season.

Well done, JD. I, for one, am proud of your efforts. Keep it up!

He has been superb. I loved his movement today. I wonder if some of his success this year has been down to AVB asking/trusting him to play a bigger role than poacher.

Something that I could never understand about Harry - took Defoe to wherever he went but never really trusted him. While he drives ,e nuts I'm really happy he's been given a chance to start under AVB and show what he can do. I think we saw that value today...

I thought Bale's goal was similar to Defoe's breakaway goal against Reading - the movement by the runner (Defoe today, Bale against Reading) to drag the defender across was identical. I wonder if it's down to management instruction or just a coincidence. I like it, anyway! COYS!

Saying the he had a "wonderful vision to pass to Bale for the 3rd" is an understatement to what he actually did. He pretty much crafted that goal - he made a run into space to receive the long ball from Sandro, then somehow managed to control it with a tall defender on his back, held his ground by the side line, then turn inside and advance with his head up looking for options, and when Bale made the run he provided him with sweet through ball.

There was still some moron who spent the entire 90 slagging him off behind me

as much as i expected Defoe to shine before the start of the season due to AVB style, i was annoyed with him yesterday..

If we've someone like Aguero yesterday, we could have finished it 4-2 or 5-2 in the last mins, a bit similar way when City beat them 1-6 with three goals in last mins ! Man United defense looked so poor when they are behind in those 2 games, I think we could've paid the price for not signing top striker if we didn't get our luck at the back.. he missed 2 good chance in counter attack..

It wouldn't have made any difference with Friedel hoofing them long balls, and our team losing possession as much as they did yesterday with the balls never getting any near to Defoe/Aguero or whoever else you want to have played in that possition.

Were they when he was on his own against 2 defenders? No really good chances at all

Didn't offer any outlet in the second half. Yes he set up Bale after some good hold up play, but let's not go over the top.

I found myself agreeing with Chris Waddle - his decision making at points yesterday when faced with the opportunity to relieve some pressure was shocking.

Can we stop kidding ourselves that he's a better option than Adebayor? He's a stop gap forward at the moment - his strongest position is (and always has been) as an impact sub.

I'm all for praising our players but over-the-top stuff doesn't sit right with me.

Holding up play improved, but not a patch on Adebayor. Sorry.

All of his goals this year have been classic Defoe strikes. A scorer of great goals; not a great goalscorer.

And as for him "creating space". I call bullshit. He was moving into a position to receive the ball to shoot himself, not doing a "Samways". (He's used him by not using him)

He's playing far better than I ever imagined possible.

But I'd still start to introduce Ade asap, for the sake of our whole attacking and defensive (i.e. an outlet) play.

It's basically the Friedel-Lloris situation again. It's very hard to drop Friedel/Defoe because of their individual performances, but the team will be much better for the inclusion of Lloris/Ade.

Under Avb it has to be said that Jermain is playing like a player re-born, I have been very impressed by his overall contribution and the game at old trafford showed how hard he works to become part of the team play. A far cry from the the player who played for Harry...Long may it continue!!

Im sorry but watch the game again and apart from his work for the 3rd goal he was a passenger, a virtual spectator with us playing with 10 men most of the time.
