Discuss the Goat - Midfield enforcer

Right lads/ladies

I'm done with my self-important whining on the topic of freedom of speech. So let's discuss football again.

The Goat has mooted that we're after a midfield enforcer. So who do you think it'll be/we should get?

Many on this site believe Diarra is on his way. Then there's the ageing Guattuso, who in my opinion still has at least 2 good seasons in him; the guy's engine is awesome. And finally, Gareth Barry might be worth a punt, but will he be cost effective; Villa aren't going to sell him for anything less than £10 million.

Anyway, let's get a debate going shall we?

Gatusso is alleged to have peaked in his Rangers days and is on the wane, although I don't profess to have first hand experience of seeing him trundle about with a zimmer frame recently.

Knowing that Commolli has extensive knowledge of the African French market place, I would not be surpised to see a Wenger-like poach from some Euro-obscure set-up for a couple of mill who will lead us victorious in seasons to come.

For this position I believe we seriously need to spend big again. I don't necessarily believe Gatusso would be the right choice (although I haven't seen much of him for a while) but I do think we need someone of similar experience/age. Yes, the Modric signing was fantastic but he is yet another young player and I believe that Ramos seriously needs some more experience in the squad to help guide the younger players.

Personally I would love to see Xavi and Pirlo but I always was a bit of a dreamer:grin:

How much do you imagine they can do? Surely they're not going to take that risk. I love the Hudd's skills, but he's not an enforcer. He can't tackle, he just can't get in close enough among quick midfields. I wish it weren't true. I think we're talking about a very specific player type here, a very specific skill set.

He deserves more time, but we're not going to bet on him as an immediate solution for a major problem, when there are glaring deficiencies that would have to be overcome in two months - as there are with all our CMs. Well, i really hope we're not.

I'm also optimistic we won't go and get any old someone from the French leagues again. I think we're going to fly first class this summer. No pissing around ->

I didn't know Barry was an enforcer - what I do know is that years ago we could have bought him and I thought it was a good idea as did others but we were informed by lots of sages on here and other boards that he wasn't what Spurs needed - yeah good advice - not :)

I've no idea currently as to who would be a good buy - I like Diarra but can't see him coming - hope I'm wrong - I like Sidwell (correction - I don't like him :) - but that's why he might do a job - but to be honest now that CFC have probably put his career back a couple of years it's hard to tell if he'd be good enough - so I couldn't recommend him)

almost certainly the player we'll get will be someone I know nothing/next to nothing about - just hope he's a good 'un :)

Mahamoud Diarra has not been a regular at Real (lost his place to Gago) this season and they are said to be ready to listen to offers for him. Sure, Spurs wouldn't be the only ones wanting him, though, but worth a try I reckon.
Diego certainly is NOT an MF enforcer.
Veloso at Porto is another option but, of course, again other top-clubs will be making bids.

Veloso of Sporting (Dharmabum!) and Kompany of Bremen would be my first two choices by quite some distance.

Poulson and Albelda would be second rate but more gettable.

To comment on a few other names:

- Huddlestone is appauling defensively IMO and needs to be played as a playmaker or not at all. Just because he looks like a centre half doesn't mean he has any defensive attributes whatsoever.
- Gonzalez is as much of a DM as Jenas is - i.e. he puts himself about and puts a few tackles in but he is primarily a goalscoring box-to-box ACM.
- L Diarra (as opposed to the Madrid one I'm assuming?) will never happen, we've turned down the chance to buy him twice now.

Veloso/Kompany - Gonzalez would be my dream CM come August.

I must say i was impress with ZAKORA with Wigan and i doubt he will be leaving as Ramos clearly likes him by giving him responsibility in defense and midfield.
He tackles well but has bad pass and shooting!
Lets get's David Silva for left midfield and and iniesta!!!!!!

hi Dan :) - you come certainly come up with a lot of great info - so we turned down 'the Portsmouth Diarra' - why the hell did we do that - I always thought it was that CFC and was it AFC too wouldn't sell to us?

please I'd love to know more about this - surely this was an absolute massive mistake - especially given that we bought KPB for similar money? (can't remember the prices aTM)

In all seriousness, I'd be very happy with either Diarra (Lassana or Mahamadou). Either would do a very good job of protecting out poor, exposed back line.

Hi Dan - I was so intrigued by what you said I went to the Diarra ITK thread - and I see there it was our psychological profiling that caused us to reject him - mmm interesting

well Harry got him and it looks like he's gonna be a key part of them winning the FA Cup - and even beaten finalists and 7th ain't too shabby for Portsmouth - so did our profiling go spectacularly wrong there?

I'd certainly love to see him at Spurs - he'd fit in so well playing wise at least- of course we don't want the dressing room destroyed (metaphorically or literally :) but Pompey seem to be surviving well enough

Has everyone forgotten about Tiago? We where heavily linked in Jan, he's played in the EPL, has experience and at only 26 still in his prime, I think he could be what we're looking for
