I did not request for him to be sold, but for VDV to start ahead of him. Far more strings to VDV bow, surely everyone can see that right....?

I don't think anyone's disagreeing that vdV has a better all round game, just that a lot of the criticism levelled at Defoe is unwarranted and too harsh, especially this season considering he's our top scorer and is playing better than ever.

I would say JD was slightly better than Adebayor yesterday - his movement was very good, obviously got the goal, tested the keeper more than Adebayor (Adebayor seemed to scuff his shots more), and passed to Lennon to score.

But I think both played well, they looked good as a pair and linked up well with the midfield, and they both got in the box a lot which is always nice to see.

Yes, it would be nice if JD was more clinical, but the same could be said for Adebayor and Bale yesterday. JD got his goal, and an assist, and his general play was very good, and his work rate was very good as well.

Let's just enjoy having so many players playing so well for once.

Couldn't agree more. A long standing player deserves better. A goal every 107 minutes is brilliant form. Every time someone posts in defence of him the same tired old 'so we should drop VdV?!' argument is trotted out.

There are a few on here who think that a season's worth of premier league games only needs 11 players. :bang:

The truth is Ade and VDV is a different type of pairing to Ade and JD!

We are going to need both and there will be games where either pairing will be better suited.

We will also see JD and VDV I'm sure at some point and personally i think they'll be very good together and they are both better finishers than Ade.

Bollox... Just Bollox.

It's well documented how good his finishing is, it's not like he messed up any of the shots yesterday, none were glaring misses and he scored. He was also heavily involved in a lot of the build up play, his pass for Lennons goal was sublime.

Pick your battles, yesterday proved he's to good to sit on the bench and I wouldn't begrudge him leaving in January for more starts.

Game of opinions, so to call mine bollox is a bit strong.

If you think he is an elite striker then that's your call, for me he isnt and never has been. I'm not saying I dont like him, I just wish he had the ability to dink a ball over a keeper or place a shot in the corner rather than put his foot through it. If he had that in his locker, he would have had 3 yesterday, and probably many many more over his career. Still like the guy and he has something to offer us for sure, just not a starter for me.

Defoe really pissed me off in the first half. Then when he got in the way of that shot I was furious at him. But then he scored.

Its, as Harry would say, Difficult for him. Unless he scores he is just a player that gets in the way. But he is a busy player. And his fitness trainng in France has made him stronger.

I wasn't fan a massive of him, although I respected his goal delivery before he came here but I reckon he is going to become massive for us. He is a late bloomer in the sense he is about to bring more to his game. Dare I say it but he may become for us like his bezzie was for Scum.

I would take that ratio of goals.

Yesterday proved he's too good to sit on the bench ? What because he missed a handful of chances and wasted a couple of great positions by not getting his head up and passing the ball ? Or because a chance finally presented itself that was impossible to miss ? He did OK yesterday, but lets not exaggerate.

In 17 minutes VDV made one less pass than Defoe did in 90 and he played two players clean through in that time, add this to his ability to score at a rate as good as Defoe's and you can see why Defoe doesn't deserve to be a starter right now.

All yesterday did was prove that he's a good enough player to be in our squad and can be useful when called up. The last five years has proved where Defoe deserves to be.

I think these are fair comments.

And if Ade could put his foot through the ball like JD can how many coulkd he have had yesterday?

They are what they are, they're not Messi or Ronaldo, they're different players with different techniques. Defoes ability to put his foot through it probably won us the game at Albion last week, so.

Defoe's fight with offside rule reached new hights yesterday: not only that he prevented Modric from scoring, he managed to be offside while doing it :). I call it The Ultimate Offside. Ever. :))

I'm sorry but are you now saying that we should drop Adebayor for Defoe?

Do you mean, a high percentage of his goals are absolute stunners? Or, that he's a highly clinical finisher?

If the first, no argument. If the second, it's very well documented that he isn't.

Would you pick him ahead of Van der Vaart?

Could you accommodate him and Van der Vaart in the same starting line-up with Adebayor?

VDV and Defoe are both working with Adebayor at the moment, that's the truth of it. Both partnerships are functioning differently but well.

Personally I would be picking VDV for the simple reason that he's a more intelligent/creative footballer and arguably a better finisher as well.

However Defoe offers more pace and a direct style that sometimes proves extremely effective, and yes at other points frustrating. To be fair I think his interplay has improved and he is trying to get his head up more, that sequence of play at West Brom between Ade, Defoe and Bale was sublime...we need to see more of this from the little fella.

I think Adebayor enjoys Defoe's presence, it enables him to come a little deeper and affect the game in a position VDV would occupy. They're certainly on the same wavelength.

Ultimately though the side are playing with a deadly attacking fluidity no matter who is starting between Defoe and VDV.

I love them both and they're both bloody crucial to our season. I would be gutted if either got an injury that kept them out for a while, we need them both.

Yes I would go with VDV in the main with Defoe on the bench but over the festive period they'll both be starting plenty of games.
