Or buy a lesser option, I said weeks ago I wouldn't be surprised if we got neither VdV or Topsoba and I certainly wouldn't rule it out if Tosin was the main incoming CB........
I’m sorry but there’s absolutely no chance of that.
And I’m willing to talk about it at length now and or at the end of the season.
Everyone is extremely frustrated and rightly so, but this is unrealistic.

If we were being quoted £60m+ behind closed doors, I could understand reservations about doing a deal (and we should have moved on by now) but if we talking £45m for a highly rated CB who fits the new system, how are we not doing that deal?

This quoted price might not be 100% accurate so pinch of salt, but £40m - £50m has been the price for top CBs the past few windows and our management haven’t had the heart to stump up the going rate.

It’s such a crucial position. Not allocating appropriate budget for it has gone hand in hand with our drop off. We can’t keep doing this and picking up second rate options if we want to compete for anything.

I wonder if we could have got him for less at the start of the window and if his price has gone up now they’ve sold Diaby. I really wouldn’t be surprised if we had just payed up at the beginning of the window we could have got him for a little less. Fact is they certainly don’t need to sell and they certainly don’t seem like they want to sell.

Thing is most of us thought the same last season when we were linked to Gvardiol, Bastoni, Bremer and co.

...yet we ended up with Lenglet on loan.

I'm generally in agreement with you and am trying to remain optimistic but this is Spurs and Levy. If we don't sell Kane then there's at least some chance that Tosin is the main CB signing. It's well within the realms of possibility.

I’d honestly laugh if we end up getting Tosin and Lenglet. We will be right back in the CB market by Jan.

Would be a classic case of Levy's greatest sin: ignoring opportunity cost and being penny wise, pound foolish.

Lenglet is an OK backup/stop-gap but he's basically just future deadwood we'll struggle to get rid of. And Tosin has potential but he's not the required level to be a first choice CB challenging at the top of the league, which is surely where ENIC need us to be to get CL money coming back in again.

Investing big on a top quality CB like Tapsoba will cost us less in the long run than being cheap in the market.

And if we do sell Kane, any prospective CB's price will suddenly jump up another few notches.

This is exactly the reason why I think they won’t let this happen.
If we all can see it, so can Levy.
I refuse to believe he doesn’t realise how precarious our CB situation is, Ange certainly does and I have no doubt he’s telling Levy.

I think the thing that's strange with us is that we look at players in this price bracket and don't have others lined up. VdV seemed like that option so should just move on him. Now we're talking Tosin who is even cheaper. We need to pick a lane really. If Tapsoba is too expensive get someone who isn't like VdV. The issue in the past is we spend time on players like Skriniar and Bastoni and end up with Rodon and Lenglet who are way cheaper. Like where's the middle ground? If you won't pay 50m but will pay 30m get someone that bracket. If we end up with Lenglet for free and Tosin at 15m it's pretty bonkers.

I’ve never really understood this logic. If the club scouts a player that they really want eventually you will need to pay what is required to get them. If the fee becomes completely obscene then you move on. We don’t do this at all, we approach numerous clubs with insulting offers hoping that one goes ‘oh ok, we’ll sell’. Look at them up the road….wanted Rice from the get go, West Ham held firm but the buying club eventually got the player they wanted and needed. They didn’t offer 50m, get rejected and then offered 50m for another player down the line, eventually ending up with a player that they didn’t really want or need in the first place. I’m not convinced by any of the defenders on our ‘list’ and I don’t think the club is either. We’re just jumping from one to another until we find the easiest deal to do.

Believe me I know where you’re coming from, and have no qualms with what you’re saying.
But Levy surely knows the position we’re in as a club and the importance to put things right, he must know.
Ange has openly spoke about the need for CBs, so he must be telling Levy.

I said the same on Saturday based on 20 odd transfer windows of experience, but some posters like @SandroClegane didnt want to hear it.....along with those that agreed with him of course.

Nobody wants to hear that to be fair. But it’s Spurs so while we might hope things have changed I think we all have the expectation that it hasn’t.

Reading this morning that Ange really likes Dier and loves his personality. It’s absolute music to Levy’s ears.
