Agree 100%, the psychological difference between the first and second is massive and that's not even taking into account the time on the clock. Once you have slotted one and have to decide on what to do with the second, do you go same side, opposite side or down the middle. It must have gone round and round his head what to do, then there is the time pressure, it was all on his shoulders and the weight must have been huge.
Plus the added factor that it would’ve meant the all-time goals record.

There's as much ? in this thread as there is in the average match day thread. So many armchair managers and footballers.
If that's aimed at me I'll have you know that I've won 17 champions League titles in a row with Leyton Orient on Football Manager. You don't get much more qualified than that.

It still has to be noted that our ability to create chances from open play is poor.

We are too dependent upon individual moments of skill. When France wanted to attack they looked more dangerous, with fast passing and overloads pulling our defence all over the place.

Cant believe people have NEG'D me. His penalty was dog shit.let go of emotion and see the truth.

We lost because he missed it
But that's not what you said and it's not why you're getting negs. I think we're all aware of the consequences of that miss but people have been getting behind him, you know, supporting him.

You said something along the lines of he deserves all the shit he gets.

THAT is why you got negs.

We've seen some pretty vitriolic, ignorant and completely over the top posts, including images of Kane being hung, it's fucking indecent at best and you pretty much outright said he deserves it with your 'all the shit he gets'

TBH for that, I think maybe you haven't had enough negs yet.

They had half the number of shots that we did. They had eight shots in total, we had eight shots on target.
We're also currently the top scorers at the tournament.
We're still missing something though. When Kane drops deep there needs to be someone who fills his position up front.

ughh fucking people

5 seconds browsing on Twitter people WANT Kane to be abused to make up for Saka and Rashford.

I really struggling to understand how people's minds work sometimes.

Serves me right I suppose

Nah, wasn't you. But I will be forwarding your name to the FA as Southgate's replacement as he will inevitably get the boot now.

Didn't watch the game but seems like people are glossing over the fact England conceeded 2 goals, going behind twice. Whatever happens at the other end, if you conceed 2 and go behind twice it makes winning extremely hard.

England either perform 2 ways in these huge KO games.

Play well but don't get the rub of the green or make moments count.

Play pretty poorly and offer little, succumbing to quality from the opposition.

Today was certainly not the latter.
Yep basically this.

France don’t give away many big open play chances to anyone tbh, they defend in an aggressive mid block with very fast transition, it’s not pretty but it’s very effective and they have so much quality to capitalise on their chances.

However I do agree it has been an England teams Achilles heel for going on 40-50 years now that in BIG CRUNCH games, we don’t create that many big chances or in todays case we aren’t clinical enough with the chances we do create because in these high level games it comes down to fine margins.

We aren’t rock rock solid at the back so if we are going to be conceding 1-2 goals in these big games it will always be very hard to win but it will be neighon impossible for us to win these games only scoring 1 goal.

2018 World Cup semi final:
England 1-2 Croatia
2020 Euro final:
England 1-1 Italy
2022: World Cup Qtr Final:
England 1-2 France

Teams England have beaten in knockout World Cup ties since '66: Paraguay, Belgium (1990 version), Cameroon, Denmark, Ecuador, Colombia, Sweden & Senegal

Croatian wins since 1998: Germany, Romania, Denmark, Russia, England, Japan, Brazil Morocco since last week: Spain, Portugal

As our good friend Jose Mouriniho would say “this is football heritage”

Winners win.

I like Southgate both as a person and as a manager, but his time has probably come to an end with England. He's given us a really good base to work from and the future looks good. There's no need for defenestration, he deserves time to announce that he's moving on.
Don’t necessarily disagree with you but who do we replace him with?

I'm gutted but don't feel as bad about this one as...pretty much any other England knockout losses.

Seemed to me that the football gods simply weren't on our side. We played well and created a bunch of chances, but when the opposition CDM scores a worldie from 25 yards you're always going to be up against it.

The ref was a joke too, which had a direct impact on the outcome. Saka got the shit kicked out of him and the French players got away with it time after time. He also seemed so reluctant to give the penalty at the end - he watched it about 15 times on the screen despite it being blindingly obvious it was a foul.

Ugh.

Lloris won.
Somehow it doesn't count. In 2018 I was proud and bigging up to those around me that we (Spurs) were on the cusp of having a world cup winning captain - a feat shared by less than 20 men over the previous century, with Bobby Moore the only other of those based in English football.

I'd always thought of the world cup lifting moment as an iconic & legendary image (Maradona, Matthaus, Beckenbauer, Moore, Zoff, Cafu, Cannavaro, etc). Lloris had that exceedingly rare moment also, yet it was obscured by fireworks and a bunch of lary frenchmen jumping in front of him. Just as most non-Spurs supporters seem to be under the impression that Harry, rather than Hugo, is our captain, equally as many seem to misremember that we possess the m'fing World Cup winning captain.

I dunno, maybe it isn't as big deal as I seem to believe, but as with Harry, perception of Hugo's career seems to be dragged down via his association with us (utterly wrongly of course, but what does nuance matter to any without a bone in the fight?).

Luckily i wasnt watching ITV broadcast but Nice to see Sam Matterface getting called out on his ridiculously shitty commentary and the line he used when Kane missed.

What ITV were thinking promoting this bellend to top commentator spot is beyond me?!
