i dont know why but avb formation 1 upfront dont work for us! .. harry tried a few times but we dont look the same, we are easliy kept, teams wait n watch us ping it about doing nothing with , we get frustrated do somthing rash n get hit on the break or us fannying about trying to make something happen out of nothing n we give the ball back to the opposition. 442 at least we looked bit more fluid on the ball, having one less in the middle made us push up, but also a KEY point having 2 upfront doesnt allow them to push high n have to be careful as having 2 strikers both CD are made to work n with defo (who i must add looked sharp n dangerous in linked up play good too) help STRETCH the opposition defence with runs creating gaps. AVB last wek after taking the lead went back n changed the sytem n bang, what haopened this week the most threatening we looked was playing 442, norwich had to stop pushing forward or keep as high up the pitch. we took the lead n bang same shit, either the players ned to learn n be taught properly that style n system else we are fooked this season!

ps. we have been boring spurs, slow spurs, not fat attacking spurs, just shitty keep ball with no end product ..... thats my feeling n interpretation so far from watching this preseason n first 3 games.

Playing one up front with one in the hole is OK, a-la VdV. Maybe Dempsey can play this role.

Thing I'm finding criminal is 2 DMs at home - and when AVB finally takes one off it's the wrong one.

When that one is Defoe, yes, of course it isn't going to work, especially with two DMs in the centre.

One up front can easily work, but it will never work with Defoe on. I'm hoping that as soon as Ade is fit things will slot into place in attack. But while it's Ade isn't fit and Defoe is starting we should pair him up with another striker...which we don't have. :cautious:

Redknapp favoured 1 up front...It's what he always used when we were at full strength.

But he seemed to take the view that rather than replace Van der Vaart with kranjcar say, it was better to use Defoe. By and large it wasn't a bad policy, it was a slightly different approach we could deploy when necessary - just like AVB is doing.

At home playing 4-5-1/4-3-3 with two holding midfielder is a no-no. It has to be either Sandro or Parker. With Dembele and Siggy/Dempsey ahead.

There is nothing wrong with playing with one upfront, its the duty of the others to show some initiative, take up good positions, make better off the ball runs and attack the space.

In the case of Bale and Lennon, they are very much stuck in their rigid and predictable ways and its going to take a mammoth effort from AVB and the coaches to coach this horrible trait out of them.

The sooner we sign a winger or wide forward that can offer these attributes the better, it'll show both Bale and Lennon what they are doing wrong and hopefully force an improvement from them.

Also, even if Shift and Shoot is the lone striker (in the box) and he can't be bothered to make a run of any kind, whenever Bale or Lennon put in a cross (of any kind), the other wide player should be attacking the box, they should anticipate better and not continually be flat footed.

Erm we kinda played one up top for most of last season and when we switched to 4-4-2 and stuck with it for a while after Saha looked good in the one game against Newcastle we kinda fucked up for a while...?!?!?!

Hardly any of the teams play 4-4-2 now as 4-5-1 / 4-2-3-1 / 4-3-3 seem to be the way forward.

If we played:

Lloris

Walker Caulker Vertoghen Assou-Ekotto

Sandro Dembele

Dempsey Sig Bale

Adebayor

With a decent centre forward (not Defoe) and Dembele in there giving a bit more creativity we should be okay.

Alternatively we could also put Parker back in when he gets back and shift Dembele up instead of Sig.

I didn't like it last season and I don't like it now but I'm prepared to give our new midfield time to change my mind. Which is just aswell with our strike options. I liked it when Clive Allen headed it though.

Saying that Defoe and Adebayor were a good partnership early last season so that could be an option but 4-4-2 does seem a very dangerous formation to play at the moment as you tend to lose out in midfield.

Plus we don't have hardly any strikers to play two up top!

defoe was the sharpest upfront and caused the most bprobs today fact! when adencame on defoe linked well n had a foil, ade loks off thr pace n behind the pace, mostly due to no mpreseason or training like the rest (although alot of our team looked lethargic)

Well all the best teams in the world play with 1 up front, or play with 2 up front but no wingers and push their fullbacks up. No one plays traditional 4-4-2 anymore, even Manchester United are switching to 4-2-3-1 or 4-3-3

One upfront don't work with Defoe being that one and two defensive mids. I would like to see a midfield of Parker/Sandro, Dembele, and Dempsey/Sigs with Ade up top.

We're fine with 1 up top when Ade starts, although both times he has come on it has been for a midfielder.

Give it time.
