Anybody else wonder on Saturday or maybe since what the hell Defoe was doing in the wall?

The wall lft to right as Giggs looked at it was:

Corluka (I think) 6' 4"
Hudd 6' 2"
Defoe 5' 7"
Crouch 6' 7"

I know it didn't go over his head and had no direct baring on the goal but still what was he doing in the wall? From that distance one of the chief jobs of the wall is to make it difficult to get the ball up and down. We had 3 giants and a bloke who's mates call him midget!

We were sat behind that goal almost laughing thinking it must have been some sort of wind up.

It went over Keane, It was a great free kick, well disguised, excellently planned, fantastically executed, and not really a massive discussion point.

If anyone is responsible, it is the keeper. Not for no saving it (it was unstoppable) but, if your argument is for the players in the wall, the keeper would have been responsible for organising it.

Its not a point of argument and the wall had no affect on the goal.

My point was I found it really strange that we would even put Defoe in a wall, he's far to small for that.

Yeah, I agree that Defoe and Keane seemed a little out of place in a wall for a free kick where it is 99% certain that it's job is to block a shot on goal.

I would have opted for biggies rather than the two midgets.

Maybe you put one little'un in the wall so the keeper can easily see when the kick is being taken. Or more likely not.

so what happens when we put all our big players in the wall and they disguise it and cross? we complain about our tallest players being in the wall? Im not Harry so I am sure he knows better than us !!

There was no chance in hell that the free kick in question would result in a cross into the box. The position made it a near impossibility!

I thought it was Hudd, Defoe, Crouch, Keane...

It should really be the big lads/midfielders in my opinion, and the forwards to pick up the rebound (let's face it - how many free kicks bounce of the wall and get cleared to nowhere in particular), you only need four from the midfield and backfour and you should be able to leave your Defoes, Keanes and Lennons to mop up and run down the field.

Perhaps Defoe and Keane can jump well. Who knows? Let's pretend it didn't happen. I'm all about beating Chelsea now.

That picture sums it up perfectly, although I don't think Keane was actuall part of the wall i think he was just to the left of it and the view is slightly deceptive.

But just imagine if Rooney had taken it, that picture shows the clear opportunity he would have had to get it up and down over Defoe. In fact he wouldn't have had to have even done that he could have just struck it on the level Defoe is so small.

As said, this like picking at the bones - that freekick would've done a number on pretty much any side, was very good.

What concerned me was that everyone in the wall was ignoring Cuddly to the point where he really started to lose his rag, trying to make them move across to where he wanted them

Considering the amount of time he's been employed in this country, you'd think he must speak a fair amount of English, so perhaps our midfield/attack packed wall should wake up and show a little awareness next time.

Nobody has said any different or disputed the quality of the free kick, this isn't about that.

I think Gomes might have saved it. He saved similar free kicks last year and is about 3 inches taller than Cudicini. Anyone agree?

And yes it was ridiculous having Defoe in the wall.

It was a bit odd having him in the wall, to say the least, he was never going to get a head to the ball, but anyway, as someone said, Gomez would have saved it....(I would like to think)..and prior to the kick, Cudicini was remonstrating with his defence and wall to move to his left, which they didn't do!

I haven't seen this free kick from any angle - including live on the day - and thought anything than other than it should have been saved.

It looked too much like a rerun Robbo - defence collaboration to me.
