Gomes is playing like he did against us - flapping half the time and pulling off blinding saves

He can make some fantastic saves, but also some silly mistakes... If he can get rid of the mistakes he will be world class. I hope Redknapp can do with Gomes what he did with James....
So we have a keeper of ability, who needs to adjust to the Prem and improve his decision making. I think thats called having the raw materials but we need to mould it. ie Coaching. Why do so many of us Spurs fans always expect the finished article?:duh: How many bad decisions has David James made over the years, even last season while being lauded?

I think we should give Gomes time and coaching, is Clem still involved in our set up? We need 2 excellent keepers pushing each other all the way.

However, it may be that the new rich kids want to buy Buffon or someone similarly ridiculous, leaving 2 good keepers; Joe Harte and Schmeichal battling for scraps. Ben Foster or Green could be good too. Like the idea of English.:hump:

He's 27 years old. And he is still raw material and not the finished article? Why the f**k did we buy a project?

I'd hope Gomes comes good but if not I'd like to see us get Green in as he's been a consistently good goalie for the Spammers for the past few seasons.

Failing that I wouldn't be upset if we got Foster...

Is it me or does anyone else think that a goalkeeper's ability to command his area is more important than being a superb shot-stopper? Ideally, you want someone who can do both equally as well, but in the Premiership if a striker is good enough they will make sure the keeper doesn't stand a chance of saving it, however good the goalie may be at pulling off top saves. Whereas, in games you may have to defend 5 to 10 corners and also a few free-kicks and judgement calls at dealing with these are much more likely to be significant in the grand scheme of things.

That's why I wouldn't be too displeased to see us sign someone from the Championship who has had to deal with big burly physical players week in, week out and knows how and when to come and claim a ball. So long as they are decent at kicking and are agile enough to make good saves, keepers from tis level should be considered more often IMO.

He also looks like he is in agony with his rib injury still. I wonder how much that is affecting his general form?

Jennings was in his prime AFTER we sold him, James at 27 was a write off, now he is 38 odd and everybody loves him.

Gomes has made so many good saves for us. My question would be;
Why is he called into action quite so often? Where is the protection?

Maybe Toldo or Buffon will walk into Man Citeh an make no mistakes and adjust straight away to the Prem. But I'd be very supriesed. Schmeichal had tremendous trouble in his first season.

GK is the position most affected by confidence.

This season the team as a whole has had no confidence, therefore along with Gomes they have played like shit.

The team under Redknapp is finally now starting to find some confidence to go along with the talent that is already there. With Gomes it will take a bit longer to regain his confidence but as the team gets better so will he.

So keep him there and let him play with a team that his playing well unlike the team he has been playing with.

I dont understand the issue with gomes.

For me, he has shown he is a quality goalkeeper and can make some fantastic saves as well as some great catches from set pieces and crosses.

When he was picking the ball out of the air against chelsea everyone had nothing but praise for gomes, admitting how he was so much of an improvement on robinson and how is catchin and willingness to get the defenders our of trouble was top draw and now people are questioning his ability to catch the ball.

I think it has rightly been pointed out, he is trying too hard and trying too much to get the defenders out of trouble by coming out for everything - which has resulted in him taking corluka out on 1 or 3 occasions.

He needs to pick and choose his moments, and that will come with confidence, but the fact that he is willing to come out for everything and ease pressure on the rest of the team is a statement of his characteristic and willingness to possibly end up taking the blame for any cock-ups as opposed to leaving the defenders to 'deal with it'.

Its like the situation with Modric, first few games people were questioning his purchase as a waste of money and how he has failed to adapt. Now he is arguably our match winner and most influencial player and we cant get enough of him because of his last 2 performances. Gomes has been at the club for about 10 matches and yet we are already discussing buying a new goalkeeper come january? Give the guy a break please...until he does a Robinson and manages to cock up game in and out for a whole season then I will not be calling for his head.

Leave the guy alone I say, he will come good in a matter of matches.

Gomes is fine, he's just having a patch. He's been our best player for the other 10 games we've played!

You probably haven't read too many of my posts on Gomes (or Robbo before that).

Very far from Fickle I think you will find.

My reasoning for starting this topic, is that lots of media sources and people here are shouting out to replace Gomes, now I'm not one of them and am very happy with him and his performances.
However, many aren't, so I started the thread to find out who they would want, and who is actually available and would be willing to come to us.

I doubt there are any that would better what we have to be honest.

Score last time Ramos Spurs played the Scum = 5-1
Score Redknapp Spurs played the Scum = 4-4

Not good enough, should already have been sacked.

Gomes is a great keeper. Unfortunately he is low on confidence within himself and obviously has no confidence in the spurs defence. This is why he is coming for everything and his own low confindence is affecting his form . Which is why he's dropping/punching badly. Pre season and at the start of this season he was coming for balls and catching them easily. he looked so commanding. Harry just needs to help him improve his decision making. I think he will be ok. Can't think of a better shot stopper apart from maybe Cech.

I think it must affect him severely - it's difficult walking with bruised/broken ribs, whatever he has - but playing in goal in the Prem!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

as I've already remarked, in a footballing context it's heroic and Gomes deserves immense praise and credit for his commitment to the club
