We'd be idiots to get a new first-choice keeper in.

There's definitely room for a second-choice though, Cesar's old and only on loan

just to repeat - GOMES IS INJURED !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!:)

and hi BC :) - was PJ our greatest keeper?- IMHO, without doubt our best for the past 50 years

The fact you didn't really see much of Pat at his greatest for us circa 71-76 explains a lot why you may have thought we sold him before his prime - trust me on this we didn't (IMHO again :)) - as I say his prime continued at AFC but he never made the astounding impact there he did at spurs - hence his double player of the year awards with us

besides saving two penalties at Anfield in one game

he made wonder save after wonder save time and again

two of many stand outs were v Bailey of Wolves and Beattie of Ipswich (they were on TV - there wasn't so much TV coverage then as is well known)

the Beattie one - sheer miracle territory

- as for greatest ever- some/many older people may rate Ted Ditchburn even higher

from memory in my Venables 'all time Spurs XI' videocassette

he had Ditchburn in just ahead of PJ - he also had Burgess in mid too from the 50/51 team

maybe Alf Ramsey at full back too - not sure on that one - he would certainly be a contender

and of course Bill Brown from the double team is another contender- but there my memory is young and hazy - I saw him play but not enough to be confident on judging him

The BBC Gossip column says that the Daily Mirror is reporting that we are after Hennesey at Wolves. Not seem any of the Championship so can't comment on how good or bad he is but he has looked ok when I have seen Wales play

Hennesey is a GOOD keeper, with alot of potential, but he's still learning, he would be good as a number two, but I dont' think he's what we need as a number one at the moment, he's too young to take everything on. I know Joe Hart's young too, but he's got a solid defenders infront of him that play almost every week together, we can't afford that luxury yet.

Yes, I've just seen this on NewsNow.

I'd quite like Wayne Hennesey as think he looks a realy promising keeper. bit surprised he's being kept out of the Wolves team - think he got suspended due to a red and then Carl Ikeme has stepped in. Suppose it's good that McCarthey is keeping players in who play well, but Hennesey was very good for them last season.

Wolves seem to be very good at producing quality home-grown goalies - they also have Matt Murray who would still be their regular no.1 if it weren't for his extremely unlucky injury record.

Would be interesting to have a Wolves fan opinion on which one they feel it the best!

But I haven't seen him show a lack of confidence. He seems to come for pretty much everything. Unconfident keepers tend to get stuck in 2 minds and end up staying on their line or coming too late. Gomes seems to fly out for everything as if he's Superman. The guy seems ultra confident in his ability if you ask me. As i said before, I think the real issue is how Gomes's handling of balls crossed into the box effects the defence. If they don't feel confident in their keeper it will cause confusion. I'm sitting on the fence on this one and think we'll just have to wait and see, but I'm sure we'll find out in the coming weeks and expect to see oppositon teams target our near post.

But that is the sort of keeper he is. He'll always come for crosses because that's the way he plays. I realise it's rare in the Premier League because generally most keepers here are by and large glued to their lines. All keepers are good shot stoppers these days but the best ones command their area too and mostly their judgement is sound - they know when to come and when to stay.

Against Chelsea Gomes got it spot on. He was confident, he made tremendous saves (especially the one from Lampard) and his judgement of crosses and command of his area were superb.

But now his confidence has gone, it's written all over his face. He was smiling in his first few games and was loose and relaxed. Now he isn't smiling anymore, and he's almost looking for excuses. So he'll still come for crosses and try and play his game but because his confidence is lacking he's unsure and it's affecting his judgement. He's coming for balls he shouldn't, he's staying when he should come, and there's very little presence and command from him now. Even some of his shot stopping is starting to suffer.

Honestly Joey, against Chelsea his defence had total confidence in him. Now they don't. Whether he stays or goes will largely depend on whether he gets his confidence back. Let's hope Harry can work his magic

It actually annoyed me watching the game yesterday when the commentators were slating everything he did, at one point he made a great save and they still were knocking him, the ****s

Though I'm not entirely sure Gomes is the answer I agree with Andy's comments about the slating he gets.
Green let in 3 howlers against Bolton Gomes didn't concede yet he gets the bad press.I doubt any of the young English keepers would be an improvement.

He was part of a renaissance at Arsenal and we were kicking ourselves stupid for letting my hero go to our arch rivals. We did lose out on his prime years but I'd suggest that was because of the superior defence that they had compared to ours.

Go back a few more years than you DC. Jennings was a fantastic keeper. I remember his debut for Spurs (Sheffield United?). In the early minutes he came out for a cross around the penalty spot and caught it one-handed.

If I had to pick the best Spurs keeper I've seen then I would put Bill Brown in front of Jennings and Ted Ditchburn. They were all wonderful keepers.

Keeping was easier then; the balls did not swerve so much in the air.

I do not rate Gomes. Yes, he's an improvement on Robbo but he makes too many mistakes.

fair comments Phil :) - obviously Bill Brown's credentials are there to see - so pointless me arguing as I only saw BB a few times as a youngster

I wonder what people like Bill Nick who spanned the two keepers' eras in their prime thought

as I say Venables who watched and (presumably)played against both of them and played in the same team with PJ rated PJ above BB but behind TD -

to me it's more or less impossible that BB was better than PJ - cos I rate Pat so highly - but as I say accept your POV entirely :)

Was keeping really easier in those days?
Although the ball moves more now, is lighter and travels faster, I tend to think that the finger tip save made by Gomes against Pool would break his fingers. But, the keeper was fair game and I've seen some savage assults on keepers in black and white that were deemed 'legal'.

This would be the same Bill Brown who completely lost the plot in his last couple of seasons, before Bill Nicholson lost patience and brought Pat in? I think you've got your rose-tints on, Phil. In fact, Brown and Robbo have a fair bit in common.

I wouldn't say keeping was easier then (from a personal point of view); sure, the balls didn't swerve around so much, but you had zero protection—even at school/Sunday level there was always some **** of a CF who thought he was Nat Lofthouse, and the refs just let them get away with it. Punching the old leather balls (especially when they were wet) risked broken knuckles if you didn't get it just right—on the other hand, accidentally on purpose missing the ball but connecting with aforesaid **** of a CF was payback-time fun. I've still got a couple of scars on my knuckles to prove it.

Gomes is still finding his feet—he had WTF? moments with PSV, and he's got to learn you don't have the time on the ball in the EPL that you do inthe Eredivisie. Someone's got to tell him he doesn't have to come for every ball—I said months ago, when he was first being linked, that we'd be screaming for him to stay on his line as much as we screamed at Robbo to get off it.

I don't mind him, but I'd prefer a solid, boring keeper who we forget to mention because he's so dull & good at his job.

harry won't sell Gomes.. Gomes will be our no.1 choice for years.

he is carrying an injury, and lacks confidence as our defensive midfield is none existant yet again.

Gomes is 300x the keeper of Robbo.

Gomes will be better than James and he is a lot younger as well, just give him a chance to regain his confidence and get over his injury.

I agree with Lamentor, Gomes is a much better keeper than Robo. The problem he has is that he doesn't trust his defenders and can you blame him. Put simply he's trying to do too much.

Gomes is doing the right thing by trying to play the ball out through our defenders instead of just launching it long. We don't have a very tall side and it would just come straight back at us, much better to try and retain posession.

I know I'm going to get slaughted for this, but the biggest apparent mistake he made was rolling the ball out to Ledly. Ledly was the one at fault not Gomes, if Ledly thought Gomes was going to kick it long why was he just a few yards outside the penalty are? Our defenders need to be making themselves available to receive the ball not just standing around like dummies.

Tottenham could make a shock move for Newcastle goalkeeper Shay Given after Harry Redknapp declared his admiration for the Irishman.

Reports suggest Redknapp could move for a new goalkeeper when the transfer window reopens in January after failing to be convinced by Heurelho Gomes.

Given's future at St James' Park has been the subject of speculation for some time with the Republic of Ireland international establishing himself as one of the best keepers in the Premier League.

It has been suggested Given is weighing up his future on Tyneside due to the current turmoil at the club and that the Magpies could consider cashing in on the long-serving custodian.

Redknapp is a big admirer of the former Blackburn and Celtic keeper and admits he would be interested in signing him if he became available.

"Shay Given is a great goalkeeper who I admire. Any manager would have to be interested in him if he became available," Redknapp is quoted as saying in the Daily Mail.

The fact the quotes come from the Daily Mail are a bit dubious. Also what player doesn't 'Arry say nice things about?? Given is a quality keeper but none of the big boys have ever come after him other than slight interest from Woolwich a couple of years ago.

The media hype over Gomes' mistakes are gonna lead to Harry being asked leading qurestions about GK for a Long time. I think Harry will give Gomes the time and i think we'll end up seeing an absoulte god of a keeper emerge from this rocky patch.

Ed de Goey was on radio this moring and said not to worry that gomes is wonderful and will be wonderful again. He mentioned Gomes during a segement of the interview where they were talking about the best around. He put him in with Cech.

Given is a very very good goalkeeper though, wouldn't be a bad shout.
