I only saw the highlights and read the reports, but it seems that Gomes made a number of great saves (and that his kicking game was pants, as it usually is).

Can anyone who saw the game confirm or deny that he was in great form (except the kicking)? Surely he'll start on the weekend...

I was reading the commentary on the BBC Sports website last night, and it seemed to suggest that during the end of the game Huddlestone and Bale were taking the Goal Kicks!!

Does this mean that Gomes is still injured??

I saw the highlights on TV afterwards and i personally thought he did really well - but it didn't show much of his kicking! I remember when he got injured the first time, others had to kick for him, so i'm just wondering if he's still crocked! - In which case i would prefer to see Cudicini stepping in until Gomes is back to full fitness!

Anyone??

Was there last night and he was excellent. Made some great saves caught every cross (apart from one which he dropped but caught on the bounce). There was one save in the first half which was brilliant and I think it was Kevin Bond on the sidelines shouted over to him and put his thumbs up, Gomes seemed to get a lift from that. Your right about his kicking though it's terrrible, can't seem to get it to the half way line when kicking from the floor. His throw though is incredible, he should stick with that. Can't remember Hudd or Charlie taking goal kicks at the end, so not sure on that one. His celebration when we score is quality too.

Harry said last night that Gomes was feeling his leg a bit, which may explain his poor kicking.

From what i heard on the radio last night, it sounded like he made several top drawer saves.

I was at the game too, and I agree with Finno above. He made some fantastic saves, commanded his area reasonably well too. His kicking was rubbish, but we know that.

But yes we scored 5 goals, but they had 3 great chances in the first half, and had it not been for Gomes, it could have been different.

I would say from the highlights he is back to his old form - Now you have to decide if that is good enough! Yes he made great saves, but he's kicking was rubbish, he punched when could have collected easily with his hands, and he dropped the ball from an easy cross ball - plus, he's throwing was also off last night, gave the ball away or put our players under pressure with short or bad throws!

I think with a dogy/new pairing in defence it is imperative we have a goalkeeper that "commands" his goal - that is not Gomes, he always worries me - he is a great shot stopper, but in fairness Carlo has pulled off some great saves recently and kept the score down, or us in games as well.

I think this is a tough one for Harry, but if Gomes can not take kick out's he is not a 100%, and I think Harry will stick with Carlo until he is - I expect Carlo to start V Burnley!

Most of the saves you'd be disappointed if he hadn't made to be honest, but the way he commanded his box was magnificent. He seemed to deal with just about every cross that came in, which made things much more comfortable for a less-than stellar defence.

His kicking was pitiful, but I'll put that down to still feeling the leg a bit. Even with that he's a comfortably superior option to Cudicini.

I am sorry but punching and dropping the ball in the penalty area from lets face it, weaker crosses is not commanding for me.....I thought he did okay in that area, but I would not call him Magnificent, or commanding  and yes he is a good shot stopper, but as you said, you would have been disappointed if any of those went past him, AND, I would have thought Carlo would have saved them also.

Don't get this at all. Gomes dealt with more crosses last night than Cudicini has all season.

And the only time I can remember him punching was when he came through a crowd of players and he got the ball well clear of danger.

His kicking has always been poor but I think if you are relying on your keeper for kicking you have more underlying problems in the team and his agility more than makes up for it. It would be great if he was VDS but he isn't, and luckily he isn't Ben Foster either.

If you watched the highlights it looked that way - However I also listerned to the match live on the radio, and the commentators were not flattering of Gomes - he seemed to have made quite a few errors from the commentry - including, punching instead of catching, and dropping the ball from an easy cross?? - Having watched Gomes for a good while now, it sounds like Gomes all over to me?? So I think it sounds like an accurate portrayal of his usual game:shrug:

Good points:clap:

But I guess the real question for us is; Is he better than Cudicini, not VDS or Foster:shrug:

I get the feeling the after the injury he didn't have the confidence to kick and it showed. Understandable I guess, the last thing he wants to do is twang it again.

Its all reminisant of Robbo. Moments of brilliance marred by moments of stupidity.

I watched the game, fella - you're the one judging him from highlights. Couldn't really give a shit what the radio commentators said - there are plenty of people still aboard the 'Gomes is a clown' bandwagon.

They can stay on it, I don't care. The bloke's a class act. For a first game back he was bloody good - apart from his kicking, which I think we're all agreed was pish.

As I said before - and I'm ready to be corrected - I can only remember one punch and it was entirely the correct option and perfectly done. Some people think that keepers should try and catch everything.

Yeah, he dropped one cross but gathered it at the second attempt. You are right about one thing, though. He commanded his box and made a number of decent saves, so it was "Gomes all over" and "his usual game"

I'm a big fan of Gomes. He has some bad moments from time to time, but also is capable of the remarkable. Some of his saves yesterday were just brilliant and I feel so comfortable with him in goal and people shooting from range. He moves quickly across the goal (robbo never), commandes his box (robbo never) and has a great reach and strong hand. I really like him to be honest. Although sometimes I'm not so sure why.
