I watched the game, fella - you're the one judging him from highlights. Couldn't really give a shit what the radio commentators said - there are plenty of people still aboard the 'Gomes is a clown' bandwagon.

They can stay on it, I don't care. The bloke's a class act. For a first game back he was bloody good - apart from his kicking, which I think we're all agreed was pish.

As I said before - and I'm ready to be corrected - I can only remember one punch and it was entirely the correct option and perfectly done. Some people think that keepers should try and catch everything.

Yeah, he dropped one cross but gathered it at the second attempt. You are right about one thing, though. He commanded his box and made a number of decent saves, so it was "Gomes all over" and "his usual game"

Rep coming your way sir. I was at the game, and I agree with everything you have said in the thread so far.

Commentators are happy to jump on the bandwagon as you say, and I thought for a first game back he was excellent. i would be more than happy for him to start on saturday and I think he will.

Gomes is better than Cudicini. I have been a massive critic of Gomes in the past but last night he made saves that Carlo simply would not have.

I was there too mate, and can only rememebr one punch he made, which was from a cross where it was impossible to catch. Completely the right decision. He was fantastic last night.

The couple of saves he made to the left hand top corner made me think about Gigg's goal a couple of weeks ago. Now I like cudicini, and think we're lucky to have two good keepers, but last night it made me think Gomes would of stopped that free kick. don't know what anyone else thinks??

Yep the free kick is the main one I was thinking of. I don't think Carlo has that sort of agility in him anymore, nor the speed of reaction and the reach to smack it away so easily.

The Giggs goal was fantastic, and I don't know if anyone would have stopped it, but Gomes is so agile, and may have had a chance. But last night I saw a very good Gomes, back to his old good self.

It was only one punch he made and he jumped over a few players to make it, landed on hs chest aswell could have been nasty for his dodgy ribs, but it was the right call.

To be fair if someone offered me a top class goalkeeper but said I had to choose one area of his game to be poor, I'd choose kicking.

First of all to put the record strait, I am not a Gomes hater, or do i think he is a clown! I want, and have always wanted him to do well - for himself, and of course for my beloved teams sake!

Yes I listened on the radio, and watched the highlights and thoght I had a pretty good idea of what he did:shrug:

BUT, you were at the game, you saw it live, so if you think he was magnificent, that is very welcome news, and I am very pleased he is, not back to his best, but it would seem, at his very best:up:

Good news for all, hope we seem him start V Burnley:clap:

Gomes is a far superior keeper to Carlo.
From the six goals we have conceded in the last two league games I honestly believe that Gomes would have prevented four of them.

Carlo is good back up has been his whole career just not top draw.

Even though I want Gomes back, to be fair, Cudicini also had a great game in the last round against Doncaster

First up, I never intended to suggest that you are a Gomes-basher or anything like that. Apologies if I gave that impression - I was just saying that there are plenty of fans and pundits alike who seem to have pretty fixed preconceptions of the big man, so what commentators say is of less interest to me than what I see with my own eyes.

Cudicini's a perfectly able deputy, but Gomes is just in a different league. With all the injury problems we've got at the back right now, Gomes' return and performance last night was of far greater significance than Crouch's hat-trick or anything else. Like you say - good news!

Good points:clap:

But I guess the real question for us is; Is he better than Cudicini, not VDS or Foster:shrug:

What I meant was he is as not as good as VDS is with his feet, who is very good, but luckily isn't Foster who fucked up at the weekend. The injury may have been a factor but I just think he isn't very good at kicking, which is fine because he is a keeper and it encourages passing football from goal kicks if he just gives it to a defender.

And the real answer Wex, is yes he is.

Better than all 3.

Most people have based there opinion of Gomes on the start of last season, when he was quite clearly playing injured.

You only have to look at the records he set in Holland to realise he is a fantastic keeper, worldclass even. I dont understand the doubts. He has made mistakes but he saved as a hell of alot more goals than he cost us.

He has the potential to be truly great.

From the highlights I seen he done well. Glad to hear that people at the game were impressed and hopefully a return for him between the sticks against Burnley.

I seem to remember Paul Robinson was fantastic at kicking and distribution - unfortunately it was the strongest part of his game towards the end of his time with us.

Gomes kicking looked bad last night but it was probably the worst I have seen it. Gotta be favouring the injury a bit still.

TBH, I could care less about his kicking, like CoyBoy says, that encourages us to get the ball out quick and play it on the ground instead of hoofing it up to Crouch or someone.

Exactly, he alwways looks to pass the ball short and throw it out, as opposed to Cudicini who infuriating lamps it long even when he have the midgets up front.

I can't really remember a Gomes back pass clearance which has cost us a goal. It was obvious that he was nursing his hamstring through last night's game, hopefully this will settle down by the weekend, and Harry will put him back into his rightful place as custodian of the goal.

Can't believe some of the stick Gomes is getting. Some of the saves last night were brilliant. Can't say that I have thought that when Carlos has been in goal.

IMHO Gomes is better than Carlos and it's no mistake that when he is in goal and we have our first choice defense we keep clean sheets.
