Friedel is not better than Gomes...what Friedel is is more reliable at the basics, meaning the defence in front of him can relax a bit, and not be filled with constant anxiety if, for instance, they have to pass the ball back, under pressure.

Ultimately, what it means is that Gomes will concede net more goals than Gomes, but the team will concede net less goals with him in it.

With Gomes he is more effective in turning defence into quick attacks. Frediel's distribution of the football especially his kicking is hopeless. He is reliable if there isn't a difficult shot to save. Frediel has aged and is no longer the same keeper as the one some years ago.

I would rather neither was our number one.

If he is available, as a couple of ITK's have claimed, we should be going alll out to get Lloris.

He never "threw it into his own net"

I like the guy and as I said, if could cut out the basic errors he'd be world class. If he did, i'd love to have him back in goal but what you've said there I don't agree with. As much as I like the him, yes, he did (not literally of course)...........Off the top of my head, Fulham away and Madrid at home were two games in which he made the kind of errors you wouldn't see on Hackney Marshes.

Also, while I think of it, I didn't agree with the abuse he got after the Chelsea (away) game where his error in handling was retrieved well before the ball crossed the line only for that clown of a ref to award the goal.

I know.
I love the Octopus, because he is a lovable geezer...truly (y)

I am just saying that he is more likely to drop clangers, especially under very little pressure, in between the moments of making amazing saves that most others couldn't, and that makes the defence ahead of him more jittery.

I would love it (Keegan style) if he has spent this season watching Friedel, makes a comeback, having improved these aspects of his game, and became our no 1 for the next 6 - 8 years...but I ain't holding my breath ;)

I think many people are guilty of projecting their own opinions onto others. We're asked to believe that the defence is more relaxed with Friedel in goal, yet the defenders never looked nervous with Gomes. It seems that some fans feel nervous with Gomes in goal and assume the players feel the same.

WRT the Fulham goal, he was unlucky it took a bad deflection off of his chest. Yes he should have done better but it's not the clanger some people claim it is.

Why hasn't some other club bought him then? Well firstly he's not for sale, secondly I'm sure many clubs have probably forgotten about him. I give him a lot of credit for not demanding a move but perhaps he thought he'd wait it out and see if he could have better luck under the next manager. I thought Redknapp was going to go last summer and by this summer at the latest and perhaps Gomes banked on the same. Sadly it was too late for Bent and Pav

I say it because the players looked nervous to me when Gomes was in goal...they looked less nervous to me with Friedel in goal. I think the net result was that the defence was more assured looking to me after the change.

Why do you think Redknapp basically froze Gomes out and brought Friedel in?

Precisely. Never seen one scrap of evidence that suggests the defence shits it's collective pants with Gomes in goal, not one bit. Basically it's a pay off between Gomes making 4/5 clangers a season and us conceding from crosses into the 6 yard box when Friedel is glued to the line. One of them is far more evident and shocking, the other less so and I think that payoff would be well in Gomes favour.

We conceded pretty much the same last year and this year (41 last, 43 this), it's not like he's stopped an avalanche of goals going in.

To be fair to Friedel, and Gomes, many of those goals were down to poor defending more than the keeper, but no he didn't make a huge difference if any.

Why do you think Redknapp basically froze Gomes out and brought Friedel in?

Because he's clueless wanker mainly. Why would you publicly humiliate your best striker, mess him around and then sell him then do it again with his replacement? Why would you sell one of your most promising players because you'd "heard" he wasn't that good? Why would you ignore one of the brightest talents to join the club in years? Why would you pretty much abandon training sessions?

You would have to ask Redknapp that one, but when you do let me knoe cos i would like to know the answer to that one. But Gomes has outstayed Harry at Tottenham and imo i believe he should be given a fresh start under another manager, who can maybe along with some proper coaching staff help iron out Gomes's faults. Lets be right isn't that what managers/coaches are also paid to do??.

To me it is simple...the defenders showed less trepidation in making back-passes, Friedel very rarely even looked remotely troubled in receiving and redistributing the ball from said back-passes. Gomes almost always looked nervous when he received back-passes, and frequently lost control of the ball. The defenders looked more and more nervous consequently, and held on to the ball, looking for options, and were often caught out because they were dwelling on the ball. That was how I saw it - I didn't listen to anyone else's opinion. I said at the end of the season before last that, much as I liked the Octopus, I felt trepidation whenever he received the ball and whenever he came for crosses, and that the defence was looking more and more nervous. I also said immediately that I thought this was why Friedel had been brought in. I didn't need someone to tell me.

Redknapp certainly made some bizarre (and plain crass) decisions, but I was kinda expecting a more reasoned answer. Don't want this to turn into another Redknapp was great/the great beast type threads

So would I.
I just think, given Octopus-Boys propensity for making bizarre feck-ups, that it made sense to have a more assured prescence in goal.

I have never felt it was harsh to drop him and take him away from the spotlight, any player in that situation needs that to be done. Then get to some real work with them, it's evident Gomes is a good keeper who lost form/confidence. It certainy doesn't help the team having a keeper playing who is going through a rough patch and for the good of the team something had to be done.

I cannot agree with what redknapp did though, couldn't he be fucking bothered with him anymore? or weren't his coaching staff up to the job?? With Gomes being a keeper any mistake he makes is magnified and usually extremely costly. Any outfield player who makes a howler usually gets away with it, due to a team mates help or it not being so costly.

Look, Damian, I'm not disagreeing with you - but maybe it was a bit late for Gomes dropping him last season, and he looks, personally, to be gone from the Lane already. Like I said, I would love it (Keegan style) if a manager came in now and got working with him, and, for his part, he had been watching the game from the sidelines and picking up some tips.

Of course the staff should be working with him and improving his game - I think Tony Parkes did when they first came in, it was, in the season before last, he seemed to go back to his old ways with a vengeance - in the season we qualified for the CL he was a very decent performer. Ultimately, the manager has to be responsible for all the back room staff and their performances - something the journos who are swarming all over slagging Dan Levy off should remember. And I have just pointed out to a poster who was criticising AVB off for making Anelka train with the youth players - Redknapp has done the same with players, and I do believe that his much fabled man-management doesn;t extend to anyone who isn't immediately in his plans, and Gomes was clearly not immediately in his plans anymore, so, yes, he probably did just stop trying with him.

All players, not just Gomes, should see this as a fresh start. I don't think it'll make a difference to Bentley or Dos Santos but if either of them turn out to be amazing under AVB/Moyes/Gazza then I'll reassess. Shame Pav left but hopefully we'll get a striker in that's even better.

Sorry SP, that wasn't my intention but when you ask why Redknapp made one bizzare decision it begs the question why stop at just one. Why did he make any of those decisions? The only reasoned answer I can give is the one I gave. If he's not a usesless wanker did he have some kind of betting scam going on? Perhaps he let Rosie pick the teams and let Sandra give the team talks. I guess that'd also make him a useless wanker. Maybe he had some master plan where he'd make us look far far worse than we actually where and then when no one expected it he'd turn everything around and get us playing like a slick unit.

1) Exactly right - even Jenas. Even the freakshow that is David Bentley's head...as there is a have decent footballer somewhere in there.

2) Think we just disagree on this, as I don't think it was one of his more bizarre decisions.

What the actual fuck does any of that mean though?

I hope to god, like all the gods, and Zeus, that you are not talking about Roman Pavlyuchenko and Giovani Dos Santos.

SP, now it may be that I've had a drink or two and it's late but, the first paragraph I understand. The second mystifies me. I think there may be a typo, but I can't work out where it is! Would you please explain in simple terms so that even an idiot like me can understand? Thanks.

Nah, you is pissed, Brudda:eek:

No typos...put simply, Friedel may concede more goals through lack of brialliance than Gomes would, but Gomes would concede more through fruitcake activities and from the defence making errors due to not trusting Gomes.

OK. THAT I understand BUT the second paragraph says: "Ultimately, what it means is that Gomes will concede net more goals than Gomes,.........". And THAT's the bit that confused me! Who's pissed (apart from me)? LOL!
