At first I was a bit shocked; Berbs AND Keano leaving! The best strikeforce in the EPL, going their seperate ways so soon before the start of the transfer window!!

But as the weekend passed, and I started to mull it over, I began to think, "This could be sweet".

Mr Levy is a bit of a crafty old devil; he'll get absolutely top dollar for our beloved (well not so much now) strikers, and will probably come away with £40 - £50 million.

£40 - 50 million!!!! For two players in their late 20s? Surely someone, somewhere is taking the piss? Oh yeah, that'll be us.

Okay, okay, I know what you'll say; Utd and Liverpool are paying for tried and tested Premiership experience. But surely their money could be spent in more effective ways, on younger and more promising talent?

This is especially so in Keane's case. I like Keane, and think he's a good player. But he's not a £20 million player. For (at the very most) £5 million more Liverpool could bring in Villa to team up with Torres.

Anyway, less about our rivals' getting mugged and more about Spurs.

It has been said that we had enough money for Bentley and a DM player, before all this Keano Berbs craziness started.

If that was true then our midfield could look something like this:

Bentley
DM
Modric
Dos Santos

Second string

Lennon
Hudd
Jenas
O'Hara/Tarrabt/Bale/Gilberto

That's not such a bad second string (and we may even sign Capel aswell) - also, there's Zokora and a few of the youth team boys who will get a sniff.

It also means we can sell; Steed, Kaboul, Chimbo, TT, Ghaly, KPB and still have plenty of players for the season.

Also, the players who are left, are all experienced players.

From player sales, at a conservative estimate, we'll make:

Keano and Berbs: £40 million
Sunderland boys: £20 million
The rest (Gardner, YLP, Rocha, Ghaly): £5 million

So that leaves us with £65 million to spend on 2 new strikers, and anybody else we want to bring in.

Bloody hell, that's some war chest!!

If only the Toon were run this well

Now that you'ver sussed our midfield worries ant put us all at peace, let's focus on buying what we need - an experienced cover CB.

No problem Hughy my good friend; buy who you want.

And use Mr Levy's card.

He's loaded.

Unfortunately, you don't win games by having money in the bank. I'd rather have both players than the money. It's only worth it if we can find replacements that will be equally effective. Darren Bent is a prime candidate, if he can stay fit. We'd then need a 3rd choice striker and someone in the Mido/Kanoute/Berba mold

Yes, we could end up with a ridiculous amount of money from selling the 6 players mentioned (DB, RK and the Sunderland 4) but will we really be able to buy two strikers who will do us as much good as DB and RK have done? I'm having my doubts...

Fair point and I understand what you're saying

But I think we'll be able to replace these players, and go on to strengthen the squad as a whole.

PS It's funny that we're having the same debate on two threads

And Juande might even coach Pekhart into a 15 million pound striker; given Crouch is now worth 11 million.

if we did make 65 million from outgoing players i would still be really surprised if levy spent more than another 30, max of 40 million in this window.. given we have already signed some quality mids, and our recent tendencies to extensively work the january transfer windows.

we have bent who is untested at spurs and so will get a good few months to prove himself.. we may only buy one more striker, and he may be another number 10 type supporting striker like dos santos/keane.. we may not buy a target man just yet and see how peckhart does when he plays.. we obv need some more mids and defenders (if we are to sell all these players, the like of kaboul, malbranque :( :(

so dont expect us to spend too much, the squad will look decent and trim before the start of the season..

but obv. would have been better if berba and keane loved spurs, we wouldnt have to bed new players in : obv. would have been better to have the players than the money

to those that say (including levy) that its best to cash in on these older players:
we would have had a good chance of qualifying for the CL with berba and keane + the other new players + the other good players we have.

now we are going to have to work bloody hard and also be fortunate ( just like the season we almost finished 4th), but it is still a viable target, has to be said.

gotta hit the ground running though!

It'll only be sweet if we can replace them with a partnership that is equally as effective...

That's not the point though is it. It's a maybe, a possibility, a 'perhaps'.

The fact that money in the bank does not equal players is a straight forward enough equation. But it just seems that people see all this cash, see the price-tags put on players and automatically assume that once the two reach the same, that means the player is ours, regardless of whether the club want to sell and whether the player wants to come to us.

It's Football Manager's fault. I don't blame you, per se, more the World you project.

even without the sales of berbs and keane, i don't think money has been an issue in getting players in really - it's been our lack of CL football

so 65m in the bank (though i think you're optimistic about the sale of the last lot for 5m) means bugger all if we can't bring the merchandise home.

and ditto about the carrick post.

similar to the r.ferdinand-->leeds situation for 18m - at the time, huge fee but harry just couldn't bring in anyone decent despite the cash.

ive got total faith in juande to get in players he wants, maybe not players we think will do a job, and we'll come good. i think he wants to play a 451, so will spend on creativity (bentley, maybe even arshavin after links today), and just get 1 striker in for like 10 mil.
