Homegrown - What's the low down?

Okay clever people who know what's going on.

I have two questions:

1. How many 'homegrown players' do we need to have next season?
2. Which of our current squad would actually count in terms of Englishness and age?

You need 8 to fill a squad of 25 but if you don't have enough it just means you can't have 25 spaces. For instance Chelsea didn't have many last season but it didn't matter as they had a squad of 18 or so

Hardly any top teams have a squad of 25 all, at 20 at most

We have currently walker, bale, Townsend, caulker, siggy, Lennon, rose and Dawson for next season who qualify plus we may not sell one of the fringe players

Yep smith makes as he is 22. Anyone that is 21 until January the 1st makes it

From that list Defoe, Huddlestone, Parker, Caulker/Dawson could go as they will have interest and are upgradeable leaving us with 8 HG players and my sig has 8 HG - check me out!

Archer is still too young to be included in the 25 man squad. He was born in 1993. He will be one of the U21's that we can use.

So we're actually in a pretty good position where it comes to homegrown players.

We don't need to bring any in and can in fact sell quite a few which is useful as hopefully to our benefit as the prices should be quite high.

The only risk I suppose is having too many players overall. Looking at the above lists, it doesn't leave a lot of space for incomings until we've done a fair amount of trimming.

On a side note, though not just to do with HG players, if you have 25 players who are eligible for the 25 man squad then you have to name that many.

EG if you have 23 players you want to name as you know they will be played and also 2 others that you don't need but haven't been able to sell/loan/whatever then you would still have to name them in the squad.

If you have more than 26 obviously it's up to you which ones you name, as long as you name 25.

That's why we had Friedel, Gomes, Cudicini and Alnwick in the season before lasts squad. We were never going to use Alnwick but as we had him and only had 24 other players he had to be named in the squad.

Pretty straightforward really.
I've looked it up and apparently:
Two under 18's can play as well as the named 11 giving us a 13 man team.
Suggest we play 443 and two keepers. Keep it simple.

Looking at that list, with Bentley, Gallas, Jenas, Cudicini and Gomes all gone that leaves five spaces. Considering that Townsend, Rose and Caulker will almost certainly take three of those five spaces, and with Smith, Mason and Obika all viable options as well, you start to see why we'll need to wait for a bit before we sign any players.

There's a lot of space to create!

Brad Friedel doesn't as he didn't come over to the UK until he was older. He tried a few times, but never got a work permit
