...does anyone else?

I would like to know the stats on how many goals we have conceded from set pieces. Of course that doesn't tell the full story, but it would be interesting. I did a quick search but couldn't find exactly what I was looking for.

It's very nerve-racking when teams deliver the ball into our penalty area. We don't seem to have commanding figures that win the aerial threat. Instead it's time to play pinball.

Unless Fazio is playing our set-pieces do scare me too.

Before this game it was 6 in all comps (excluding penaltlies and direct free kicks). On the 31st of December, we ranked 7th best in the league for scored vs conceeded.

I just can't believe that no manager or coach can improve that part of our game. So if it's not the coaches' fault, it must be the players. But how come we keep on buying players who can't defend?

I dread our defending generally.
Yeah I have to agree. It's not just set pieces. Also I imagine the set piece stats don't cover goals that were a direct result of not clearing our lines during a set piece.

Unfortunately, all the defenders in our squad are prone to errors. That, coupled with a blatant lack of organization and leadership and not having a true DM means we leak goals.

I dread to think how many we would let in if Lloris wasn't around. I'll actually be amazed if he stays should a decent bid come in from a big club. Unless he's a true masochist who likes a challenge. :)

A lot of it is down to coaching we have always made half decent players look shit by the way we play.
Just take a look at how pulis gets his teams to defend solidly within a short time of taking over, so Yes it can be done but you have to focus on it to make it effective.
As the saying goes goals win games defences win titles its very true as one look at the chelsea goals against column will testify to this.

^The right hand side of this table tells you what you may like to know.

We have conceded 4 from set pieces, league low is 3.

You may feel worried when we concede a set piece, I suspect every fan does, but this season, we've been pretty good.
Whether that is random variation or deliberate, is another matter...

think they mean in all matches, and considering we conceded a couple recently in Europa and the CoC Final it seems to feel more often

I'm more bothered about how completely unthreatening we are at corners.

Other teams will have noticed it and are quite comfortable with giving them away against us. It's a real issue that Pochettino and his band of merry men have failed to address. Along with our general wide play.

I don't worry about set-piece defending, but I do notice that when we win a corner, that's usually the time I'm most comfortable with in nipping for a quick pee. I know I've got a good minute where nothing remarkable is going to happen.

There was an article before we played Swansea and QPR saying if we sort out defence we'd get top4.
I still don't think we will but it is becoming an issue, we are now scoring a very good amount of goals but making life hard for ourselves but some very basic defensive errors.

Hard to tell if its the coaching or the individuals or the fact the back 5 has no protection or the fact we're just quite an attacking team now so will naturally have chances against us. I think it's a combination of all of these.

I was at QPR game yesterday and we just could'nt deal with their long balls and physical threat strange as Dier and Jan are both quite strong so not sure weather its a team thing or what. Their goal was a nice goal but easily avoidable.

I'd like to see Stambouli with either Mason or Bentaleb. We struggle with teams coming at us through the middle and also don't support the full backs defensively when they are getting forward.

I feel the same way so was really surprised to hear that we are second in goals scored from set pieces.

I can't agree. I actually think we defend off set pieces this season better than for a long time. We are much improved. I no longer expect the opposition to score off every corner. Sure there's some panic sometimes but that happens to all teams.

Perhaps but I don't think Stambouli is the right kind of player I may be wrong but not sure he's good enough really.

It's funny but any fan of any team i've ever meet have complained that they're shit at defending set-pieces and can't get their corners over the 1st man.
