do you think Ars*nal will beat Liverpool away and the Chavs will beat West brom away? I don't...

Yes I do.
Arsenal and Chelsea will both win their next games, maybe not arsenal, but definitely Chelsea.

Man the fuck up people, get over the result yesterday FFS dry your eyes, never seen a forum full of such sackless infants. Looking forward to the game next week, I have faith that we wont see that sort of perfomance yesterday for the rest of the season. Some people have a severe lack of backbone.

Nothing to do with missing a backbone, reality is that we never beat Utd regardless of form.
The gap will be 4 points by the next set of games, unless we pull off an unreal performance, but judging by yesterday this will be hard to come from.

Not sure that is entirely the point of this thread. Why not wait until we drop to 4th place and then say "I'd take 3rd"!?!

Don't get me wrong, I do think we will finish 3rd, but I would have been incredibly happy to accept 3rd when we had a 10 point gap and the promise of Arsenal, United, Everton and Chelsea to come.

A bird in the hand and all that...

I thought the point of the thread was a hyperthetical answer to would you take 3rd now.

I wouldn't until after the Utd game, then judging on that we will most likely be beat, I would :)

Think it fits in pretty much dead on, in this thread.

Our next 5 league games are the tough ones and then we have that relatively "easy" run in of 8, so as long as we are around 3rd place after the next 5 then we should be OK. The next set of 5 includes these games (as highlights):

Liverpool - Arsenal
City - Chelsea
Newcastle - Liverpool
Spurs - Swansea
Arsenal - City

So in a world where we beat Swansea at home and City win both those games, the worst case scenario would be Arsenal and Chelsea on 58 and us on 56 heading into the "easy" 8. Chelsea would still have to visit the Emirates as well.

It's all complete conjecture, and there are no easy games, but it certainly doesn't look too bad. I'd still have taken 3rd before the NLD though!

yes.

we finish 3rd we can hopefully progress further and make full use of the opportunity(unlike last time) if we finish outside the top 4 then it would be a disaster.

I did do a worst case scenario, which pretty much went that we lose/draw all of our games, and those around us win the games that they would be expected to normally.

At the end of the difficult run, I had us in 5th place, behind chelsea and arsenal by 1 point, with the 'easy' run of games to finish the season.

Can't imagine that happening to be honest.

I really, really, really wish folk would stop using this we never beat United argument - five minutes ago the same folk would have been saying we never beat Chelea because of the whole Three Points Lane thang; and five minutes ago they would have been saying we never beat the ArseScum especially not away ; and five minutes ago the same folk would have been saying we never beat Liverpool, especially at Anfield, because of relatively recent history.

It is just as likely that yesterdays farrago will inspire, just as losing 5 - 1 to Citeh did. By your rationale, the Goons should have just laid over and died yesterday because of their cup losses to Sunderland and Milan, right

The point being, that looking only at our results, drawing up entirely negative results and then saying doom, doom is entirely pointless.

I think Five Points Lane is possibly stretching it a bit

You don't think while eating
Now, I have a vision of you crouched over a prostrate gazelle, snarling at circling vultures while gulping down huge chunks of flesh Eek

I don't talk with my mouthful, but rest assured as soon as I finished my sandwich I immediately said:

"We never beat United. We never beat Chelsea. We never beat Arsenal."

Actually we do beat United, but officials choose not to notice the ball going way over the line.

That reminds me...anyone know who the ref will be? Anyone but Webb, Clustterfuck or the cyclist and we'll actually have a chance.

1) Yeah, that was meant to be part of the post...I'm just so fecking wound-up ATM thanks to that shambles yesterday

2) Dunno, but my concern is that Beetroot Head manages to find a formation to fit both his match-winners into his starting line-up.

But we never win against Utd.

Have we beaten them in the PL at all?

I think it's silly to dismiss, there hasn't been a performance all season against one of the top sides that I've been confident of winning, and or deserved to win.

Yes we beat arsenal, but hugely dominated.

Can't recall another one from that.

Yes, we beat them at OT...but the ref decided to be blind.

It was said, frequently, that we couldn't beat chelsea because we never beat Chelsea - until we beat them.
It was said frequently that we couldn't beat the Goons, especially away - until we beat them.
It was said frequently that we never beat Liverpool, especially at Anfield - until we beat them.

Yeah...United have held an Indian-Sign over us for quite some time. But this is a single match, and to not go into it believing we can win it due to historical precedent is crazy, to me.
Yeah, United may win, in any case...but I am not prepared to just chalk it off as a defeat before a ball has been kicked.

After Pompey in the cup a couple of years ago, everyone said that we wouldn't beat The Gypsies and the Russians in a matter of days of each other because we never beat them, and that we wouldn't make the CL.

Just sayin

That's exactly my point.

Just seems like there are too many folk using that defeat as an excuse to rapidly resort to high-pessimism mode Eek

That is probably more like the exception to the rule though isn't it? I mean to call fans who have for most of their lives watched Spurs feck it up and win very little highly pessimistic seems very unfair. You are taking one set of 3 games in the last 20 or 30 years and saying, look we will do that again when more than likely that was a total fluke(we did play well and I was so proud of our performances) and our lot seems to be stuck as talented team that just can't seem to get over the hump.

To me they are being realistic and you are being way too positive. I mean we just got our ass pounded by a half decent Arsenal side and the score could have been worse than it was. What out of that defeat makes you think we can beat Man U. (I don't care where the game is at) with our pedigree and knowing the refs give them calls and penalties??

Am I saying we should jump off a bridge and end it all, no but to think we will beat the champions with as much as we have riding on the game seems silly to me. We are a solid but not title challenging side. 3rd or 4th is just about right for us.

For me I am just praying we get a draw from either Man U or Chelski. If we do that things will look a whole lot better, if we can't do that I will really start to worry about even making the champions league.

1) For the first 15 years of my Yiddo existence I was used to seeing us competing for plenty, and winning a fair bit.

2) Well, er, no - we have been clearly on the up since the BMJ reign, and that improvement is gathering pace. Anyone with eyes can see that - so to suggest that what happened in the darkest days of the 90s is norm, is, to be more correct, the exception to the rule now. Don't believe me - go back to the thread from last week asking which is our best memory under 'Arry?
clearly, breaking hoodoos, and bouncing back from bad defeats is more the norm now, than the dross we were served 15 years ago.
So, yeah, ust for the record, so that no-one things I haven't expressed myself fully, or they have misinterpreted me - anyone using our last result as an excuse to talk as though we are still watching the team of the mid to late 90s, with the same expectations - always fulfilled - is using that last game as an excuse to return to pssimism-doom-monger-mode.
