You know what, I'll come back and eat humble pie if we do beat them.

I'm really not a pessimistic fan, in the slightest.
I am very realistic though, and this is why I base my presumption that we won't win when we play utd.

Can't see how anyone else can see it that way, other than being highly hopefull.

Because I am also highly realisitic:

  • what I see is that there is less of a gap than there has ever been.
  • we have been getting closer and closer to beating them (and only haven't, frequently, due to incredibly bad reffing decisions - always in their favour).
  • They have been quite chaky defensively, especially way from home.
  • We have had a terrible result but have not become a terrible team, and I am expecting a reaction.
I don't see anything here that is unreasonable, and it is not relying on extrapolating from past results. If I have said something outlandish, I would be grateful if you could show me where...otherwise, I think it is possible to see it differently to you, without basing it only only a huge dose of optimism.

I am, of course, optimistic, as well.

Before the gooner game I thought this was the best chance we've had of beating them (officially) for a long time, so I don't think SP is simply being an optimist.

But that was before the 5-2 loss. Not saying we can't still win, but so much depends on how we react to that defeat. Ultimately I think that there will be an air of uncertainty in the team, with some mentally 'up for it' but perhaps not 100% confident that others are. That would play into United's hands.

Some sloppy passing and/or an early goal to United and the pressure will only grow.

I said all of this about the Goons, and that an early goal may see them collapse - well, guess what, we got two and they didn't collapse.
Therefore it is reasonable that if this can happen with a team clearly infrior to us in the league (points still show that), it is entirely possible to have exactly the same effect with us.

Possibly. I'm not saying I'll give up if we go a goal or two down, but it's a bit different for a gooner team that probably know that they're not really that good, to bounce back from those poor results to rally against us. Whereas our players probably bought into the hype surrounding the team, and have just been brought crashing down to earth in brutal fashion.

The last time somebody put 5 past us we went on an 11 game winning streak so it might even be a good omen!

Lose an we are still 4 points clear at worst. This is the very toughest point of our season so we don't need to win every game to do well overall.

The big difference being that when City beat us our team was up in the air. No Parker, no Adebayor, Modric's head 'not right'. The end of the transfer window allowed us to draw a line under the opening two games and push on.

Not that I disagree with your second paragraph though. As you say, this is the tough patch we all expected. I certainly didn't expect us to enter this period of games with such a great cushion of points between us and 4th (or even to be 3rd for that matter!), so I'm still confident...especially when you consider that our rivals have a more difficult run-in, but just spread over more games.

Yes I would take it. With both bloody hands. It's also time to decide who are the first 4 defenders and when fit, always play them. We need the back 5 to know each other almost telepathically. I'm not sure that allows us the in and out stuff of King or Gallas next season.

Forget Hazard et al if needs be due to finances. Scoring isn't the problem. Defending and controlling a game against the top teams are. We can do it but only ever so often.

Take 3rd, have a stab at the FA Cup (which we really should be looking to win) and get in Vertonghen and at least one FB. Walker and Benny are both good but not good enough to keep up performances without competition. Neither have that player snapping at their heels and from a depth and motivation POV, it needs changing. IF either gets injured, Rose and maybe Naughton, if he returns, just don't do it for me.

That 5-2 has really shocked me. This team is a good team and losing to assnal at their place is by no means a disgrace but the way they folded was the Spurs of old. We're all far too familiar with it to deny it. That the weakness of mentality still lingers somewhere in this squad is terrifying.

This summer has always been shit or get off the pot time. That result and particularly the manner means that nobody at the club will forget it either. Get the right bodies in and 3rd this yr will look great. Don't and we've seen enough from yesterday that we could all too quickly slide back rapidly. Forget about challenging for the title. We'll be back to Europa League spots against Pool/Barcodes for the next 5 yrs.

All that would be hard enough without a manager flirting with the FA so yeah.

So, we rule out doing the double then.

Nope.

We need some pretty amazing luck to win the league, but it is still mathematically possible.

We are still among the favourites for the league.

Indeed, I've half a mind to pop over to Ladbrokes and put 17 pence (or summit) on us doing the Double - it must be, like, 27,000 to 1, or summit, now

like posted in another thread

im hoping we beat at least 5 teams at home( stoke, blackburn, norwich , fulham , swansea) till end of season thats 15 points and hoping to pick up another 2 wins on road at maybe qpr and bolton. thats 21 points which is 74 points;

other games united everton sunderland chelsea maybe villa i would not be so confident about. id be reasonably happy with 5 points from that bunch, anymore a bonus.

Would 79 points put spurs in automatic spot for CL ? cos thats all im interested in.

3rd spot wud guarentee definte plans and definite targets imo and make life alot easier.

The performance, not necessarily the result, we see on Sunday will reflect our ability to recover mentally from hard setbacks.

I'm actually really intrigued to see if Harry can lift them and not only that, to see if he can use it to our advantage by getting a huge performance from them.

If we want to be a big side we have to be able to bounce back, the response is vital and we are capable of putting in a big performance against United and its the least we should expect this Sunday.

If we look fragile, timid and nervous I'll be genuinely start to worry with the upcoming fixtures we have.

I am a realist. We are not going to win the league. We can still finish third, but we have to bounce back like the Scum did after their two losses, like we did after being smashed by Citeh at home and like we did a couple of years ago after being beat by Pompey in the Cup.

Oh and we can certainly give Utd a run for their money this weekend. We can beat them. I believe !!!

we never win at the reebok.

I'd take 4th to be honest if I was offered it now With Chelsea 3rd.

To finish in top at expense of arsenal would be as good as a cup for me

We are nothing more to Yanited than their good time gals. We're their dirty weekend away. A submissive whore.

Players and managers can come and go but it's always the same.

At least until Baconface fucks off anyway.
