€ or £? Not that it makes as much difference now as it would have done a few months ago.

But this is Archibald + BEN + Dan. If ever a more feared triumphirate of ITK were established I like to see them.

Going to talk to another club is a LONG way from anything happening. Until we agree terms (there may have been theoretical agreement on terms of reference so we know we are not totally wasting our time) with the club we can't even (officially) speak to the player.

We still need to:

1) Agree terms with both club and player
2) Pursuade the player to come
3) Beat off any competition.

This is a good sign about our intentions and ambitions but not anything to be excited about yet. However, Levy is a shit hot broker and (as Woodgate and Modric showed) does often get his man.

Under £20m is worth playing ball IMO. Closer to £15m very good (remember buyouts are set higher than you'd expect to be offered).

His last contract was signed unitl 2013 with a £20m buyout.

As you say, for DL to be on a plane, the deal must have been qualified - which to me means we are in the ballpark of his buy-out (£20M I think it was).

I reckon (2) is the hard bit.

(3) is largely a function of (1). Given it's early doors and provided we say we'll pay-up to stop them hawking him around to drive up the price I think 1 & 3 are within reach.

Hopefully the Ramos card supports (2).

I was under the impression Man Utd have first dibs on anyone from Sporting.

I was under the impression, and I might be off on this, that Sporting are a little sick of United taking their players. I doubt it has any bearing on our dealings either way, but I don't think United should be considered an auto.

I am sure Sporting fans are sick of selling their best players when you look at how far they are behind Porto in the league!
There are certainly some very good midfielders in Portugal but I think it will take a huge fee for any of their players - players in Portugal never seem to come cheap!
Rumours are that Jean Makoun will sign for Arsenal now that Flamini is leaving - hope not he is a quality player!

Buyout clauses are set stupidly high with the point being that they should never really be exercised. They are a legal requirement in Spain and Portugal. Most players are sold for significantly less than their buy-out.

United don't have any first refusals on Sporting players: http://www.skysports.com/story/0,19528,11670_2792453,00.html

To me Veloso is well worth 3 times the price of Makoun so Arsenal are welcome to him if we can get Veloso.

True, unless the club in question is Sevilla who seem to have silly buyout prices like 7 million for Poulsen, 10 million for Capel and I saw 8 million euros for Keita. Daft.

If that's true then he should be our number 1 transfer target. I'd take him ahead of Veloso, Gattuso, Gonzales or Makoun. He's a genuine allround midfielder, who is strong in all areas. He reminds me of Ballack, in that he can defend, create, score goals and will run further than anyone else on the pitch.

United are likely to be looking at other positions in the summer - specifically long ter replacement for Neville with Micah Richards strongly linked and and a replacement for their very own tin man Louis Saha.

Signing a player like Richards negates any need to buy Veloso as the kid can play anywhere along the back four and in midfield.

I'd love us to get Veloso. I remember seeing him in the U21 European Championships, and he really stood out. Haven't seen him play since, but I'm sure he's come on leaps and bounds since then.

I really can't see Man City selling their best up and coming player to their biggest rivals.

I hear you but:

1) Every player has his price
2) Richards is probably disillusioned with Citah with the way the Thai has been treating Sven
3) He fits in with SAF's recent comment about buying young players
4) He could be the Neville replacement
5) SAF will have lots of his English players/mates 'turning his head' (I know that's called tapping up but apparently it doesn't apply to ManUSA)

I really wouldn't be surprised to see that one happen.

Whether City fans would be up in arms has nothing to do with it everybody is for sale at the right price just look at Zidane, Figo and eventually Berbatov. The kid is ex Oldham Ath youth and an Oldham fan not city and given the progrees City have made and then been forced to see more upheaval by disposing of Sven and added to that isthe fact that he won't have to move house.

The major reason though would be that he can play as a top quality right back while providing much better cover for for Vidic and Ferdinand than Brown, O'Shea and Silvestre currently provide.

Sorry, but Brown has been immense this season, and Man City don't exactly need the money do they?
