Of course, Messi did this and he's a hero, why am I surprised. August last year vs FC Dallas.

It would be interesting to see what a ref says because I did see a few comments that it was the marking the pitch which would be considered an offence rather than moving the ball.

I sometimes wish I could put a complete thread on ignore. If it was possible, this would be the one. Gets to me, much more than it should. Just me I guess.

This is actually really good management in my book. He has been a cock and absolutely disrespectful to the club, but Brentford gain nothing by castigating him now.

They'll sell him in the summer anyway. Might as well get the most out of him and then use the money to improve.

Makes sense to me anyway. Wouldn't want us to go anywhere near him though, he's got Chelsea written all over him.
And to be fair it has been Brentford’s business model where they’ve sold for high prices and replaced well.

Toney said after the game that he’s allowed to move the ball a yard either side. Would love to see if that’s actually in the laws of the game.

Moving the ball is one thing, it’s moving the foam as well which makes it look dodgy.

@cwy21 is it in the laws of the game? (I'm sure you're the ref?)

The factual statement of moving the ball a yard is not in the laws. Technically the spot of the foul is absolute. In the spirit of the laws the player is given a little leeway (maybe a foot or so) and that's why a lot of refs in other competitions will draw an arc with the spray and not just a dot. It also prevents something like this happening.

Here's an example from MLS. It's generally considered fair game for the player to shift the ball a bit but within the arc.

Of all the things to get worked up over - this one does not make the list.
This ^

I don't like Toney at all, but getting really confused as to why people are making such a big deal over it.

Players do it every game, he moved the ball a yard to his right, you don't often pick up on it but every player slightly shifts the ball a yard or two for a slightly better angle, more so on further out free kicks closer to the by line that are crossed in.

Most throw ins are taken 20 odd yards from where the ball went out with all the fake throwing and gaining a foot every step.

No point either debating about where the ref sprays the foam, 99% of the time the ref sprays down 5-10 yards away from where the actual foul took place.

If anyones to blame its the keeper for not double checking his wall or the wall itself for not seeing what he's done and shifting over a couple of steps.

I actually think him moving it further to the right makes it obvious to the goalkeeper where he's going to put it. Should never have gone in.

Unless he's unsighted by the wall especially with a guy lying on the ground behind it. It's possible once he's started lining the wall up he can no longer see the ball. Hed almost certainly have shifted the wall if he had seen the ball move the amount it did.

That's hilarious. The music makes it.

As someone referenced, it's fully part of the game to try to get an advantage. Whether it's moving the ball a bit, trying to stop a quick free kick by standing in front, falling when you get a bit of a push from behind - it happens in every game.

And it's the job of the referee team to catch this stuff. The ref was marking off the wall, but you can bet (no pun intended) that the AR will hear about it in his assessment.

The ref probably wouldn't even have noticed. Toney has scraped the spray foam up and moved it so from a quick glance wouldn't have noticed it has been moved.

Personally I'm with you and don't see too much of an issue generally speaking. However we are talking about a player who was in his first game back in six months for breaking the rules, and has this week been totally disrespectful to the club who stood by him through it. I can certainly see why people are should we say disgruntled.

I can see that too. Personally I think the foam bit just makes it funnier.

The keeper set the wall up for the original position of the ball. Toney would have to bend the ball quite a bit to find the corner. Moving the ball a yard to the right almost gave him a clear line of sight to the corner of the goal.

The players in the wall should have paid closer attention and shifted over proportionally.

Or alert the ref. It was clever from Toney. Despite all the off-field stuff, he's incredibly switched on when on the pitch and you saw that throughout the entire match.

Players shift the ball all the time on free kicks all over the pitch and creep forward loads on throw-ins. There are enough genuine reasons to dislike this bloke but THIS ain't one of them
