Exciting signing!

Oh no wait you said McCarthy, I thought you said someone that would actually get in our team!

Why spend 8m let alone 20m on a bench player?

Let's consider this situation: We have about 17 million sitting in the bank and we can't buy a decent striker with it. So buy another midfielder instead lest the fans scream that Spurs are skint, and if the worse comes to worse, we play like Spain.:)

Disagree with alot of comments about him....

I like this player, he goes about his business like all good players do, making the game look simple, reminds me of Carrick abit.

I could even see him Paulinhio and Sandro in the middle with Bale Benteke and Dembele further forward in many situations.

I thought he was decent when I saw him last season but I don't see the point in spending money on a position where the squad is already crowded. Must mean at least two of Parker, Livermore and Huddlestone are on the way out.

I've asked this guy at work about McCarthy as his wife is good pals with Mccarthys girlfriend/other half. Says that so far only Tottenham have shown concrete interest and that's the only move for him on the cards at the moment.

I don't really know much about him but I've been looking around and he's been getting rave reviews.

Well this would be disappointing. Miss out on much needed strikers here and there over the last few seasons due to differences of 2-3 million, but spend several million on someone we don't even need.

McCarthy is an ok player, but not even remotely needed. Spend the money on some creativity or on securing a striker first.

Its definitely a strange one. Very good player but doesnt make sense to me the more I think about it, unless of course we are also on the verge of addressing the key areas we need to.

We do not know what the board are doing! I trust AVB/Baldini. I am not panicking about strikers or creativity because I am optimistic that is being resolved, and there is certainly no smoke without fire with all the suggested itk's as well as media leaks to keep me believing.

A very good player - yes please. He's the sort of player that if Man U bought we'd all be saying what a great piece of business etc.

He'll be able to play with any combination of Paulinho / Sandro / Dembele and will get a lot of games next season.

I'm a fan of McCarthy, and I do think we need another CM as I think Livermore, Huddlestone & Parker will be off, and maybe Carroll being loan out too.

Presumably, Paulinho, Sandro & Dembele will be the starting three in midfield. As backup, the only two we'll probably have will be Holtby & Sigurdsson, neither being that strong defensively. So I think we need a more defensive minded young midfielder. McCarthy did play a holding role for Wigan last season, but with Holtby & Sigurdsson, we maybe need more of tackler to compliment those two.

Plus Wigan will probably be asking £12m+ for him, which is a hell of a lot for someone who probably wouldn't be considered a starter. We've been linked with the likes of Marrone & Can this Summer, players who'd be cheaper & more suitable IMO.

He reminds me of Carrick too. In the US we get so much EPL coverage... And I love the sport so much that I watched just about every match last year. I was actually surprised he was still at Wigan last year.

With the right players moving on and for the right money I can see this deal being a good one. However some of the prices mentioned do seem pretty high for what I've seen of him.
