Due to being on the other side of the world and other commitments I didn't really get to watch many games last season, relying on highlights for any action so......

.....can some one just give us a brief on why Rodriguez is the ideal striker for us? Do you think it was just a one off season at this level? Has he got the attributes to be a 20+ a season?

Rodriguez will come cheap. He'll cost £12-15m instead of £25m because of his contract situation

Rodriquez isn't worth 25m so even at 12-15m, that seems rather steep for a player with 6 months on his contract.

I'm confused why we would be interested in signing him until he's proven his fitness again... and who's to say he'd even want to leave given the way Southampton are on the up? It also occurs to me that those Southampton players all played as well as they did due to the way they complemented each other, rather than individuals.

If Southampton make the CL, they won't leave, but I'm not sure they could turn down Spurs or the teams above us (in terms of stature), regardless of our corresponding league positions. Southampton are still Southampton.

Agree with you on the fitness thing. We'd need Mitchell and our doctors to be pretty damn sure if Levy was to take the plunge, but it's just so un-Levy-like.

That said, all the talk around the Schneiderlin transfer was centrered around a bid for both players, so it looks like we were willing to take the risk in the summer.

J-Rod also has a brilliant relationship with Poch and credits him for the improvement in his form etc.

If we can agree a fee with Soton then this transfer is pretty much a slam dunk imo.

Funny thing is that I remember watching J-Rod at Burnley and being really impressed. Assuming his knee gets back to where it was before, or close, then he would be a great addition.

He's not a striker. Think Chadli. AM/2nd striker. Not needed. Chadli's role and probably Kane's better role, too.

I agree, fair enough if Poch wants to bring him in as a striker and thinks that's his best role going forward. But if he wants to bring him in as a LWF then I'm less enthusiastic about the move. I agree that we need another option for the LW but Jay is far to similar to Chadli. I would much prefer to see someone who is more capable of beating his man and playing a killer pass.

Completely agree. If Chadli, one of the leading scorers and most clinical finishers in the league this season, is not consistently unlocking defenses for us this season, adding another similar LWF will serve nothing to increase our attack production. We need a different option, one who can stretch defenses, cause disorganization, and force them to overthink situations.

What about if he has 18 months on his contract?

No you can't. It's about 1 month for players currently playing in England.
Can't see anything about this, apart from Football Manager Forums. It seems like it's the same to me. Anyways, some sort of agreement can always be made.

Clubs must enter into a written contract of employment with their Players on the
relevant form approved by The Association, known as Form of Agreement (Rule
C1), with or without an option. Such contracts must clearly indicate all the terms
and conditions of employment, be of stated duration and signed at the same
time as a relevant registration Form G, in the Schedule annexed to these Rules,
indicating the same duration. A copy of the contract of employment must be
handed to the Player at the time of signing both documents. Contracts of
employment signed by Players who are under the age of 18 at the time of signing
must also be signed by a parent or guardian.

(ii) There shall be no right to a compensation or transfer fee by the previous Club of a
Player who has attained the age of 24 years on or before 30th June and whose
contract with that Club has expired. If a Club wishes to offer re-engagement to a
Player or exercise an option contained in the agreement the following practice
shall prevail.

(iii) Within 7 days of the first Saturday in May, or the date of the last competitive
Match of the Club’s first team, whichever is the later, the Club must give notice
in writing to the Player indicating that either the Club offers a re-engagement or,
if appropriate, exercises any option contained in the agreement.

(iv) If the notice offers re-engagement it must specify the period which the Club is
prepared to agree and the terms and conditions to apply, which must be the
same or not less favourable overall than those which applied during the initial
period of employment – or the option period (if applicable).

(v) The Player must notify in writing the Club holding the registration within 28 days
of receipt of the said notice whether or not the offer of re-engagement is accepted.

(vi) If the offer is rejected the Player is immediately free to negotiate with another
club.

To approach him before the 28 day period would be tapping up.

Quick, powerful and a superb finisher. Can play both LWF and CF. The ideal player to compliment the cerebral play of Kane and Soldado.
