Prem Rivals Set for Makoun Battle

North London rivals Arsenal and Tottenham are believed to be eyeing up a summer swoop for highly-rated Lille midfielder Jean Makoun.

Spurs boss Juande Ramos has been an admirer of the midfielder since his time in charge of Sevilla and could be tempted into a move.

Meanwhile, Arsenal are desperate to find a replacement for the Milan-bound Mathieu Flamini and see the Cameroonian as the ideal candidate. Arsenal are rumoured to have already made tentative enquires as to the player's availability and may return with a firm offer.

Makoun is not just drawing attention from north London though, with Juventus, Monaco and Marseille also said to be interested. However, with Lille understandably keen to retain the services of the 24-year-old it would take an offer of around 14million euros (£11million) to tempt the Ligue 1 club into a sale. If Arsenal fail to lure Makoun to Emirates Stadium, Arsene Wenger is then likely to switch his attention to Sevilla's Seydou Keita.

The Mali international revealed at the weekend that a top four club in England has been in contact concerning a close-season transfer, but Spanish giants Barcelona are also keeping close tabs on the situation.

Anyone know how good this guy actually is, not another Zokora I hope.. and even he was linked to le Arse.. (Not that Zokora has been that bad lately, quite decent at his mopping up job i thought.. but a year and a half to settle in? please.. not again!) Unless this guy actually is the real deal!

from what i've seen he is not as good as Diarra, but hopefully he comes over here to us and sets the premiership on fire and proves me wrong....

Much better than Zoko—more disciplined, strong tackler, can pass well long and short, good in the air considering he's only 5' 8". He also scores the odd goal. I'd say he's quite as good as Diarra.

He has a number in his name??

Yeah.. was searching around for a explanation for that.. but scored nothing... my guess would be that it just means he is the second Jean Makoun.. maybe his father or granddad has the same name... (Jean II Makoun = Jean Deux Makoun = Jean the second Makoun...)

.. Just guessing here.. anyone know for sure?

in all honesty tho, we cant sign three Cameroon players this window, that'd be nonsense.. Not saying they aren't good, cos they obviously are, but next ACN we'd be missing the core of our team, GK, DM, CF.. Not a good idea me thinks.

From what little I have seen of this guy he looked solid and would be really nice next to Jenas or Modric, whoever is the attacking midfielder. Would be a big step up from Zokora, (who I don't hate just can't pass well enough for me.)

Anyone know why he would choose us over the Scum? I mean I can't see someone choosing us over Champions League but maybe I am wrong?

Lille's manager is a big chum of Comolli's. I'm still miffed that we apparently made no attempt to sign Makoun's CM partner Bodmer last summer. Or Seydou Keita from Lens next door, apparently.

I remember that during that particular transfer window there were lots of enquiries for Makoun but the management refused to sell him and let Bodmer leave - I would suggest that it was due to the fact that Makoun was their best player!

Makoun is their best player, but Bodmer was and is a very commanding CM. They suffered badly without him in the first half of the season, but since they got Mavuba in January he and Makoun have formed a great partnership and Lille have shot up the table.

How we missed out on Bodmer and Keita and got Bong instead beats me.

SS57 do you think that was a power struggle within Spurs management or do you just think they missed the boat on Bodmer, who I also rate very highly. (please no Spursking comments)

I've no idea. I just find it difficult to believe that DC wasn't aware that he was available. Perhaps he was, and perhaps Bodmer had his heart set on joining Lyon (and why not?) so there was no point in us making a bid.
