We have a workhorse CB in Dawson, unless we are going to upgrade him then keep him, Fonte is a downgrade, a big downgrade

Really? I think Dawson is better individually, but the best individuals do not necessarily equal the best team.

Particularly in defence, you need to build a unit, not a collection of individual defenders. It's better to have four players who are individually worse defenders, but who have a good understanding together, when to stay, when to push up, when to go towards the ball, when to stand off, when to fill in for each other etc.

Fonte has proven himself in Poch's system, a high intensity pressing game holding a high line.

Dawson has noticeably struggled in this system. AVB compromised his system to accomodate Dawson and in the friendlies we've played this summer, Dawson has looked undoubtedly the weak link. That's not to say in the right system, Dawson isn't an excellent defender. He's a stopper however, he works best in traditional English systems, such as that employed by Redknapp in the season we finished 4th the first time around, where you had a 4-4-2 with Dawson the stopper and Bassong the sweeper.

Fonte vs Dawson doesn't seem like an upgrade, but when you consider the tactical implications of each player in the system we plan to be playing, then it might be a transfer well worth doing.

The first choice partnership is clearly going to be Vertonghen and Kaboul, with Vlad if he stays, as back up, so would Fonte even want to go to Spurs to sit on the bench as 4th choice when he is first choice at Saints?

He is actually a decent CB. He is better than Kaboul, he is ahead of Fryers, Vel, Dier this moment in time. On par with Daws and is better defensively than Chiri. So he could easily be a first team CB with Vert. He is decent in the air too.

Seems like a pointless signing.

Kaboul, Chiriches, Vertonghen, Dier, Velovjic, Fryers

Should be good enough

Hmmm, Fonte wouldn't be so bad. It's also plausible we're looking at him as we seem to be linked to a variety of experienced Premiership work-horse centre-backs.

We've been linked to Vlaar, Shawcross and now Fonte.

As to Fonte, Southampton had an excellent defence last season and he was part of that. It also wasn't Fonte BTW who got left on his arse by Soldado at the Lane.
No, it was Lovren who lost his marbles afterwards.

Out of the three I'd rather take Shawcross, he's a **** but he'd be out ****. It will be interesting to see if there is any truth in this

As Kaboul is likely to be injured for half the season then that leaves us very short in experience.

Fonte is a hard bastard, something of which we do not possess enough of.

Look at all those dickhead United sides of the 90s/00s, full of aggressive & towering bastards. We need more of this.

Can't speak too much about his ability on the ball, seems to like a cheeky goal though.

Kaboul does not have the concentration levels to be a CB for us. He isn't good enough.

What! Well you can add Dawson, Walker and Rose to that list of not good enoughs then. When fit he is the best CB we have at the moment and more of a leader than Dawson will ever be.

Would a slightly odd signing this.

If we assume that Vertonghen is staying, then we should start the season with:

Vertonghen, Kaboul, Chiriches and Dier. On top of that we have Veljkovic and Fryers, and we've still got Dawson in the squad.

The only reason we'd need Fonte (who I like BTW) is if one of those first four was off, or if Kaboul has been deemed not fit enough to be a legitimate squad member.

Kaboul has never been our best CB. He does not have the concentration levels to be that guy. He is pretty thick as a footballer. Always turns off.

As for him being a leader on what evidence? The guy is to busy tying his shoe laces at crucial times in games or high five in the opponents to be a leader.

No you are. ;)

:D

I can see I'm going to have to say more :)

Before he was injured Kaboul was one of the best centre backs in the league let alone at Spurs.

His positioning was excellent, he was quick, powerful and also able to bring the ball out of defence.

I genuinely think that if he got a run of games then he'd be able to get back to that level, but his in-out periods in the team have meant he's not been able to get to a decent level of consistency.

Obviously if he's never going to get back to full fitness we need to come up with an alternative, but I'd rather give Kaboul a chance if we can.

He had a six month purple patch when he was excellent. That was it. Was not like he was excellent for season after season.

He will never get over his injury problems now, he has been injury prone for years.
