Threat: Kenwyne Jones has formed a potent strike partnership with Djibril Cisse

Redknapp keen on big target man

Tottenham manager Harry Redknapp is looking to sign another striker to bolster his frontline this month and has set his sights on Emile Heskey and Kenwyne Jones.
Redknapp has already secured a £16million deal with Portsmouth for Jermain Defoe, although it must still be cleared by the Premier League before he can play at Wigan on Sunday.
The Spurs boss now wants to bring a more physical forward to White Hart Lane because he is unconvinced by Darren Bent, while Roman Pavlyuchenko doesn't have the brute force he wants to trouble opposition defences.
Redknapp is understood to be interested in Heskey, who has just six months left on his contract at Wigan and is also wanted by Aston Villa and Liverpool.
But manager Steve Bruce is determined to keep the England international to boost his team's survival hopes and Spurs face a similar problem in trying to prise Jones away from Sunderland.
It is believed they have already had a tentative enquiry for the 24-year-old firmly dismissed, yet Redknapp's admiration for Jones has not diminished.
Meanwhile, Ghana international Stephen Appiah is close to agreeing terms on a contract after proving his fitness in training this week. The 28-year-old midfielder has been troubled with knee injuries in the past, which caused his contract to be terminated with Fenerbahce in the summer, and is now a free agent.
Redknapp also remains hopeful that winger Stewart Downing will finally complete his move to Tottenham and has been given fresh optimism by indications that Middlesbrough manager Gareth Southgate may now be ready to sell the winger even though chairman Steve Gibson is adamant he is not leaving.

Ooh yes!

He's been my choice for some time now, when he was still at Southampton.

He's not very pleasing on the eye but very effective.

If we are looking at Sunderland players,I would prefer Cisse anyday.

Would be a good signing, puts in a good shift and scores his fair share (including headers).

Cisse can be quality on his day and indeed probably more pleasing on the eye but could he partner Defoe? Plus he's not really a target man which is more what we need.

hes not exactly prolific and from what i have seen of him doesnt have a good footballing brain. no point signing a lump of a forward just to have someone big up front. if we really want a big man up front wait till the summer when crouch will be wanting to leave relegated pompey.
lazy journo just putting 2 and 2 together because harry said he wants more strenght, we'll be linked with sly stallone soon enough on football rumours.com

could be a drogba style success with his physique. Could be a plodder. With his size he'll have his uses even if they are limited, but he has the potential to do well. I think every team needs one of their four strikers to be a big guy like him, and we definitely don't have one. Whether he can keep up with fast thinking players like lennon, modric and giovani I don't know, but just having a target up there would help give us more dimensions.

This would be a good signing. A bit harsh with the comment on Pavyluchenko, but I think Jones would fit perfectly as a 3rd choice striker. Only 24 aswell, which would suggest he has time to improve further.

His early days in England remind me a bit of Adebeyour when he started out. I remember when i saw Adebeyour in his earlier days, and i thought he looked like a rubbish Kanu. But given time he developed into a top class striker, world class possibly. So theres a chance Kenwyn Jones could reach those heights and i think it would be worth taking the gamble on him, but only for a reasonable fee. I dont think we can spend too much on him and putting pressure on him to show his worth. I'd swap him for Bent if given the chance. But i dont see Sunderland selling him. They want to stay up, and they dont need the money.

But only one of those is a target man. Take Pavylcuhenko out of that and how many really affective partnerships would there be? I'm not convinced either 2 of those 3 + Giovani would operate well together. A big man like Heskey would work well with either of them though i think.

I think we could use a big targetman type striker, Jones fits the bill, I would be happy if we signed him

I think the sensible thing to do would be to keep our current group of strikers as is and then go for someone like Jones in the summer. He would be a really good addition in my opinion but timing is just wrong.
