Then again if Vertonghen and Kaboul can form a top class partnership, there is no harm in keeping Leds as Rolls Royce back-up.

Yes, like I said earlier, pay as you play -type of contract as a 3rd or 4th choise CD. But what we really need is consistency and that's why we need to move on. Have to admit that I don't know enough about Vertonghen, but hopefully he will be the right replacement for King as a 1st choice CD.

My problem with all this is not if Ledley can or can't perform , my concern is that we will have another season when our back 4 doesn't know who is playing until after Ledley's fitness test on the day of the game, surely that disrupts all the defensive work we would be doing all week with the coaches on the training ground, or do we just turn up unprepared and have some poor bugger on standby if Ledley can't make it.This can't be right at this level week in week out.

This is my concern as well, we have messed about for years with injury prone CB's ( King, Gallas, and before that Woody), a consistent CB partnership is so important to the ream and we really do have to lone as establishing one.

Unfortuatly neither King or Gallas are going to provide that, even Dawson seems to be picking up major injurys.

How many coaches are we supposed to have if every legend is kept on?
Many questions needs to be asked. Did Perryman and Mabbutt want coaching jobs? Were they offered jobs?
Were they ready for it, had they done their badges and education for it?
Were they demanding top jobs, not willing to begin at the bottom (youth etc.) and work on their qualifications?

In modern days it's also a matter of players having high egos, not to mention gotten used to silly wages.
They want to remain on good wages, and they want to remain the stars they were as players.
Just look at Ginola who have talked about how he'd like to be our manager, that he couldn't be a number two or part of the coaching staff - when what he probably would do well is as a player developer.
Everyone thought Sheringham would go into management - but it's more fun to keep on partying and shag 19 year olds.

I'd love for King to remain with the club for the rest of his life in any capacity,
but it's up to him. He must want it, he must have something to offer.
We're not a retirement home.
Rather have a medicore player, who has something to offer as a coach and have passion for that part of football, take the step into our coaching staff. Than great player, just hanging around cause he doesn't have anything else to do with his life and would just like to stay involved with Spurs and remain on the pay roll.

I have to disagree with you. Both Perryman and Mabbutt played full back, centre defence and midfield. They were hugely influential on the field and great captains. The experience and know how of both was huge. To me whether or not they had a coaching badge was irrelevant. Their experience would have been very valuable to our younger players. They were both professional and dedicated so hanging around doing nothing would never have been their intention. And i think King has a lot to off too.

We need Ledley at the club, doesn't matter if he plays or manages or picks up trash, he is a vital part of Tottenham and we will be less of a club if he leaves.

Jermain Defoe has got that angle well and truly covered !

http://www.tottenhamhotspur.com/spurs/News/ledley-king-update.page?

The end of the season saw Ledley take time to have a minor procedure on his knee.
Catching up with Ledley today, he said:
"I had a really good start to last season and was pleased to play as many games as I did. A knock in training set me back towards the end, but I opted to carry on playing rather than take the time out to have the knee seen to. Unfortunately that meant that I didn’t play the last few games at the standard I would have liked.

"I’ve been discussing things with the Club and my contract expires this summer. The Club has been fantastic in supporting me and given me several options to stay involved with Tottenham. I shall take a view with them pre-season on my future.
"Tottenham has been the only Club for me and if I can’t play here then I shall look to be involved in another capacity."

Looks like he'll probably get given a coaching role.

Sounds like he has been offered a pay as you play deal and he is just weighing up the options, specifically how many games he is likely to play should he accept.

Good of the club to release this, and of course to Ledders for coming out and saying he won't go anywhere else. What a legend.

Yep, it's got be a pay as you play or a coaching role.

Quite sad though, it does sound like it's all coming to an end for him. But pleasing that he wants to stay with the club in some capacity.

Ledley, you have been and are a legend of Tottenham Hotspur Football Club, it's a shame though that you are going to be potentially missing the best years of the club int the PLs history. But at least you got to play in the CL, it's the least that you deserved.

Yes but give him a coaching contract with a 'pay as you play' bonus. Essentially he helps out with training sessions then trains by himself to get himself match fit.

He was awful towards the end of the season and playing through that niggle may have cut his Spurs career short, we've lost confidence in him as a result. But I feel if he gets rid of that particular niggle, we have to keep him.

A really, really sad day.

Seems to be saying that he still thinks he can perform at the top level as he's blaming his injury for his poor performances in the second half of the season, which is fair enough as he was excellent after the opening debacle.

I would agree he's been offered pay-as-you-play or a coaching role. I think he would do alright as a coach working with Harry actually. Player-coach maybe, ease him into it?

Still, an incredibly sad day for a true, true legend. :(

If I was under the influence of something I honestly think I'd cry. This puts things into perspective. Forget the transfer speculation, the players looking to leave our club, the managerial rumours, this guy is what Tottenham is all about. I'll never see a player like him again in my life time and am so proud to be able to have seen a world class player stick with our club through thick and thin.

Next season I'll be getting 'King' on the back of my shirt regardless of whether he's playing. I love the guy more than words can say.

Always been the name I've had on my shirts since he started playing. That won't change. Aptly named sumbitch.

Jesus, the thought of a Spurs squad without him. I really don't care about the details and obsessions of the TW right now. I hate the end of eras.

This thread is (rightly) going to turn into a collective wail any moment.

I literally have no other desire right now other than to go and find Ledley, hug him (gently in case I break something) and weep into his shoulder whilst trying to convince him just. How. Much. We. FUCKING. LOVE. HIM.
