As others have mentioned, this probably will not stop the sale of the club - just that Roman cannot profit from the sale. Short term it will be awkward but no doubt the government will facilitate the sale to someone else as they see the club as an cultural asset - no way would they let it 'go bust'
I suppose there is always the chance they go bust before the end of May. This government aren't exactly known for their competence.

Indeed and I agree with you, but only now has he been implicated to supplying goods and materials enabling an illegal invasion of a sovereign state.
True, and that international element is the justification for the sanction.

But from an ethical point of view, the barbaric source of his wealth should have been reason enough to prevent him getting consent to buy the club in the first place, let alone be viewed by the media and authorities and many members of the public as some kind of benefactor to football, which in my view he's done a lot to ruin.

I’ve taken the time to read the general regulations to do with sanctions and the specific license given to Chelsea FC.

It’s crystal clear that Chelsea cannot be sold without the approval of the government.

More than this, the rules contain a general provision against “dealing” with frozen assets that could be interpreted as prohibiting even discussing the sale of Chelsea with a potential buyer without the approval of the government.

Given that assets are “frozen” not “seized”, the government cannot dispose of Chelsea without Abramovitch’s agreement.

So it’s very hard to see Chelsea being sold anytime in the near future.

Plus who is going to pay what he wants for a club potentially in administration

FYI. We are currently 8 points behind them ?

Doesn't matter. They will never get an owner that was willing to do what Abramovic was doing financially. It's 100% going to hurt them compared to what they had and that's a bonus.
This 100%.

People saying "they'll fall on their feet" and "they'll be fine" will only be proven right if Chelsea are taken over by a nation state ala City and Newcastle who are willing to put in billions to sportswash that they will never get back.

Chelsea isn't a profitable club. Any new owner will have to put in tens if not hundreds of millions of their own money to keep them competing at their current level. If they get bought by a Moshiri, a Glazer, an FSG type, which is by far the most likely sort of buyer, then they can absolutely forget about getting anywhere near that sort of capital injection.

They may well avoid doing a Leeds but that doesn't mean they're going to keep their place as a big six club. Most likely them and Newcastle swap status at some point in the next five to ten years.

That is the bare minimum that will happen too. There will be some additional damage on the squad side as well imo. For starters Rudiger, Azpilicueta, Christensen leaving on free transfers and can't be replaced. If no buyer is found before the end of the summer window they're dropping to our level at best with only Silva, Chalobah, Sarr and Ampadu?? as CBs.

Simon Jordan seems to believe a sale will be possible asap. With Romans statement that he would take no profits from the sale of the club, the government could oversee a sale, and along with the buyer, control where the money for the purchase goes. It makes sense, it would be in the best interests of the government, PL etc to remove him from being the owner as soon as possible
If anything I think this will just speed thing up as I’m assuming the asking price will come down significantly you would think.

I would not be surprised to hear that the club was sold hours before sanctions were imposed and they already have a new owner.

Probably wishful thinking on my part But if Chelsea were to fall away
I'm sure they will still be entitled to broadcast revenue, otherwise they could just shut off all the cameras. To demonstrate how broadcast deals are the lion share of their revenue here's their turnover the last couple years...

Would be great if they could sanction the broadcast revenue, and also for more of the sponsors "commercial" to pull out
But then they would just stop the broadcasters from getting into the stadium, surely.

I think the only way they get out of this without huge damage to the club is they find another sugar daddy owner to buy them instantly. If it even takes a few months for the sale to be brokered - and given the messy situation I doubt it will be simple - the damage could already be done: loss of sponsors, Tuchel walking out, transfer plans in tatters, debts mounting, etc.

If sponsors can walk out I wonder if the players would have similar clauses in their contracts? I doubt they'll all jump ship immediately and abandon the club, but you can certainly imagine a lot of them looking for a way out in the summer if this isn't resolved and once one player pulls the trigger there could be a mutiny.

Disclaimer: I don't know what the fuck I'm talking about.
