Di Maria... This is the same guy who had 51misplaced passes vs Switzerland in the WC.

I know he is better than that but interesting match for him given he scored a great winner.

It's the 3-5-2 that's a problem as well. It needs the right players.

With Di Maria they'd be better going back to 4-2-3-1.

De Gea
Rafael Jones Evans Rojo/Shaw
Carrick--Herrera
Mata--Rooney--Di Maria
RVP
3-5-2 simply won't be able to fit all their best players in positions they are comfortable in. And the problem LVG has got now is that he can't really drop Rooney since he made him captain and you can't leave your best player out in RVP either.

If they only bring in Di Maria and get some injuries in midfield and defence then I doubt they will get top 4 tbh.

As good as he is if LVG is sticking with 3-5-2 ADM is a panic buy. Despite how good he may be that is on the wing or at 10 not at left wing back. The other alternative is replacing Mata which doesn't really make your first 11 that much stronger. IMO it's an ill-thought-out purchase. They need a commanding world class centre back and at least 1 more quality midfielder before they can think about more luxury players.

Just told my mum that united are spending 64mil on one player, her response was "Why? Because they're so crap?"

Made me laugh somewhat.

So they aren't being linked with centre backs other than the list of ones you've mentioned?

Brings us back to Utd signing Di Maria does not affect their chase for a centre back.

They are buying Di Maria because he is available.

They will buy one of the centre backs you've listed if they can agree a deal, the Di Maria purchase has no bearing on this.
No they stop getting linked after getting Rojo

If they can put angel, mata, RSVP, Rooney, Herrera on the pitch consistently coupled with de gea, rojo, Shaw they have the makings of a top team unfortunately

Whilst its early days, I do think Van Gaal has lost the plot a bit over this 3-5-2. The main problem is that watching their first two games it seems very rigid and hasn't adapted to whats happening in the games. For me, Van Gaal and Harry/Hoddle are using this obsolete (in England) 1990's version with three out and out centre backs. I think to play three at the back now you need to be able to have players step into midfield/out of the backline if that's what the game dictates. Having three centrebacks against one central striker is pointless and the formation is in my opinion very susceptible to the 4-2-3-1 that a lot of teams in the league play.

Mata appears to have proven Mourinho right in lolking like he hasn't got the bollocks for a fight. Gifted player, but has been exposed at United IMO.

Man Utd have reportedly matched PSG's wage offer, Real Madrid didnt offer him high enough wages and then he asked to leave at which point Ancelotti dropped and was happy for him to go.

His wage is apparently €8m net, which is £240k a week at the current exchange rateo_O

He is a good player but they are buying the wrong type of players imo. I've said for the last 2 seasons that they need almost an entire new team. Cleverley - rubbish, smalling - rubbish, Jones - rubbish, young - rubbish, Valencia - rubbish. Rubbish is a bit strong but those players are not good enough. They need to get some decent defenders before di maria. I'm sure they will get them in time but I don't think he will have the impact they need.

It will be interesting to see how they will get Di Maria, Rooney, Mata and RVP on the field at the same time. That is a super talented front 4 but in the prem you need serious graft and a solid defensive base and they don't have either at the moment.

All I know is that they like to have red faces as their managers. Paleface Moyes didn't fit.

Why play Mata on the right and Rooney as #10? Mata is useless out wide, but Rooney isn't bad in that position. For me it would be -

Di Maria--Mata--Rooney
RVP
Or the same thing but with Januzaj in Rooney's spot.

I dont think he is overrated, by his own account it normally takes half a season for his team to start playing the way he wants them too. Obviously hes had big high pressure jobs before but the squads at Barca and Bayern were a lot better than the one he has inherited here. You just look through the squad and other than the few mentioned big name players its looks ordinary and the depth is lacking. Time will tell I think he will get it right but it might be not this season.

The Bayern squad was nothing special when he took over. United's squad, despite having gaping holes in certain positions, has far more quality than the squad at Bayern did.

They basically need to add two players like Strootman (who I think LVG will sign at some point) and Hummels or some top CB. But if they did they would have a team certainly capable of winning the league especially since they aren't in Europe this year.

I would (personally) line them up (based on transfers I expect them to make) like this:

De Gea
Rafael- Jones- Rojo- Shaw
Vidal/Blind
Herrera/Vidal- Di Maria
Mata
Rooney- Van Persie

I found this pretty funny.

This is how Ed Woodward would do business in a convenience store

The reason why the di maria signing is poor is because you still have this, behind the front 3

Shaw --- Fletcher -- Herrera --- Valencia
Rojo -- Smalling -- Jones

I think any defence with Smalling and Jones in it will struggle. They are both just very average footballers and obviously wouldn't be anywhere near the England squad if they played for another team. I can't actually think of a game when either of them have looked good.
