Do we actually know that it's moving quickly/ We were on the cusp of signing Kim Min Jai weeks ago. I'm hopeful we get this sorted quickly but I'm still administering the salt.

I thought it was widely understood that 'monster' would only be signed near the end of September if it was to happen. Never saw that it was imminent.

I don't accept buying a RB at the peak age of 28 is a temporary measure.
I see it exactly the way City saw buying Walker off of us. He’s a player who would immediately improve their first XI and despite the fact he was 27, they still paid £50m.

Doherty immediately improves our first XI and, whilst hes a year older than Walker was, he is statistically better than him and £35m cheaper.

Such a good deal.

He’s at his peak and we should get 4 solid years out of him. We could sign a 20 year old yet in 4 years time they may not have developed as expected and we would be back to square one.

Temporary in that he's unlikely to give us more than 3 good seasons. I think most would think a long term option would be a player in the 22-25 bracket that's showing signs of being a top tier player.

Yeah, that is not temporary then is it.

A temporary signing is a stop gap loan deal or signing a player like Silva who is 35 (or Naybet when we signed him at 34).
Signing players who are 28 and entering their peak years is a signal of intent to win something in the next 2-3 seasons. That excites me.

If you are successful and win things and compete in the CL to the knockout stages then you earn enough to buy more players entering their peak years every summer to replace the ones who are past their peak. It is how the top teams stay at the top.

As I posted in the 'our squad is too young' thread (oh no it isn't!)...

I have been concerned that our squad is too young for years. The battle of the bridge - we could have done with a couple of wizened old heads to steer us through an emotional game. The CL final - Liverpool were there for the taking, but we had no experienced winners in the team. I want more experience and more players in their peak years 26-32.

We do have few old 'uns ....
Lloris 33 (great age for a keeper)
Toby 31
Sissoko 31

But finally our young players are maturing into their peak years, the years where really good players win things....
Son 28
Moura 28
Lamela 28
Kane 27
Davies 27
Dier 26
Hjobjerg 25

Supported by a raft of very talented players who in the next two years will mature and get better ....
Wnks 24
Dele 24
Lo Celso 24
Sanchez 24
Ndombele 23
Bergwijn 22
Foyth 22
Sessegnon 20

And with academy prospects to come off the conveyor belt...
Parrot 18
Skipp 19
Cirkin 18

There is a reason Mourinho likes players who are 27+, he wants mature players who are tactically intelligent and ready to win things.

In a perfect world we would be able to replace the older outfield players (Toby and Sissoko) with replacements entering in their peak years, like Skriniar (25) and Brozovic (27) from Inter Milan, and if we did that I would be really excited!

I've renamed my dog after him and the bastard just buggered off in the park even though I was calling him back.

Be prepared though as Wolves fans say he can't defend or cross the ball. I think he'll be great for us, but can also see him get much of the same criticism as Aurier.

Yeah the general assessment of him seems to be that he's poor defensively, and his delivery is poor, but good at most stuff in between. Which sounds suspiciously similar to Serge.

the big difference is that Doherty is home grown. Kim would be nice but we needed Hojbjerg first and he filled the final non hg slot. I imagine if we sell Aurier we might get the Kim deal done.

Yea I see wolves fans now jumping on his perceived weaknesses but I can't see José agreeing to effectively swap one poor defender for another in Doherty for Aurier.
José will know all about Doherty and so will our scouts / coaches so I just can't see him having the sort of deficiencies that they are now claiming. Like when we sell a player that we don't want to lose I think it's a case that they are trying to justify it as best they can.

Fuck the long term. I want to win now. Get a player in who can perform from word go.

I've had enough of projects and 5 year plans and all that shit.

I think we are good to go after this signing, the other areas that need addressing are'nt starters so Levy can afford to take more time to look and seek better deals.

With remembering that Doherty isn’t the quickest player and has never relied on pace so he’s more likely to be good in his 30s imo. Someone like Walker may struggle once he starts losing his pace.

He’s fierce and deceptively quick . He’s certainly not slow

I am also struggling to work out why wolves are selling him to us for such a low price
