Possibly leaked as a negotiating tactic. Get Ajax to lower their price a bit.

Or we really have dropped out bc the price has gone too high.

Or we really have dropped out bc Toby is staying.

I just googled how to pronounce his name correctly. It doesn't rhyme with anything.

Most disappointing :(. I'm not sure I want him anymore :sour:.

Possibly putting 2 + 2 together and making 5 here, but maybe the D-Day cryptic was showdown talks between Toby's team and Poch/Levy? Seems highly unlikely from the ITK we've received but stranger things have happened.

It's hard to think of any other reason IF the Alasdair Gold info is true, of course.

I guess there could also be a chance that Alderweireld is still off, and someone else is in the frame to replace him. Lascelles or one of the other defenders we've been linked with, perhaps?

Maybe it's a negotiating position.

If Shitty really have bid Euros 60 million, then we'll see if they follow through and buy a CB who would have to compete with Kompany, Otamendi, Stones & Laporte in Pep's system which typically only includes 2 CBs.

If I was De Ligt, I'd rather join Jan & Davinson at Spurs.

However, if we genuinely are out of the race, then perhaps Toby stays, Foyth gets more opportunities, and we have 50-60 million to spend on other players, which is not too shabby.

I’m sure we’ve learnt some lessons from this ready for January, not to worry

Courtesy of @Hercules in the ITK thread....

Only strictly guessing re AG’s tweet, as I am not on Twitter. But he is connected. Either Ajax wanting way behind reasonable fee, inviting an auction; which we knew. Or clubs of sizes of Citeh (guessing) as examples, then no way we can compete at levels we are hearing. And guessing again, in excess of 60m.

It let me go on record and state this is strictly my own opinion. I know 100% we were very heavily in on him.

Negotiating tactic when one party is being unrealistic. Just walk away and let them sink in that we won’t be fucked about....If there’s no other interested parties in that price range then they’ll soon come running back. Alternatively, the interest from city is real and we’re not interested in a bidding war as it’d screw us on any future deals with Ajax.

Tottenham not being able to sign a first-choice target?

Imagine my shock.
Remember thar brief moment when we were all holding hands and singing 'this summer would be different'. That was nice. I liked that. Onwards and downwards in quality targets we go.

So either he's no longer keen on us for some reason, or we're no longer keen on him. Or both.

The most obvious reasons why we wouldn't be keen on him are that either Toby is staying (contradicts recent ITK) or that the price is now too high (maybe rumours of City's huge bid are accurate). The only reason I can think that he wouldn't want us, is that another big club are prepared to offer him significantly higher wages.

This isn't a typical "let's just go for the option that saves us money" post, but I'm sure had Foyth played for Ajax last season instead of coming to us, he'd be rated just as highly...

Maybe we have moved on and been encouraged by other targets ie Mawson or lascelles

Remembee thar brief moment when we were all holding hands and singing 'this summer would be different'. That was nice. I liked that. Onwards and downwards in quality targets we go.

Too true - that five minute wave of optimism was great...

Let's make that 25 years in a row. I won't be making the same mistake again next year, honest

If City come in with a massive oil money offer and he wants to go there there's not much we can really do about it. Maybe that's the case and we've just decided fuck it, we're not interested in a bidding war and we'll move on to other targets. Or maybe Toby's staying. Or maybe we're just bollocksed

Hmm gonna wait and see on this one until some more info comes out. Could easily be a negotiating stance. We can't push forward with a deal on him until something has happened with Toby anyway so could be a good opportunity to do so.

If he is closing in on a move to Juve or City then it'll probably be picked up by the mainstream media soon.

Although not getting De Ligt would be disappointing, Lascelles is a very good alternative imo; very talented, young, natural leader & PL experience.
