Manchester United confident of Toby Alderweireld transfer as Tottenham target £50m Ajax star Matthijs de Ligt

Manchester United are confident they will win the race to sign Toby Alderweireld from Tottenham this summer.

Spurs will sell the Belgium international after failing to agree a new contract with the centre-half, and will use the money to buy Ajax starlet Matthijs de Ligt.

Spurs have been monitoring De Ligt for some time and he has five caps for Netherlands despite being just 18.

Significantly he played alongside Davinson Sanchez in the Europa League Final for Ajax against Manchester United 12 months ago.

De Ligt broke through into the first team last season and formed a good understanding with Sanchez before Spurs bought him for £42m last August.

Ajax value De Ligt at around £50m, but Alderweireld’s sale will ensure meeting that will not be a problem.

Some people said Toby to Barcelona..would take them out of de Ligt chase too. Seems our top competition for him would be Man City - really hope we get him. He is very similar to Jan/Toby in that he is very comfortable with the ball at his feet, going forward and positionally excellent and he's still developing. He is already very, very good and his potential is through the roof.

Hopefully the Sanchez factor will help sway de ligt and the opportunity to be a regular. Honestly feel 3 years down the line he will be better than Toby he would soften the blow 100 percent, back three of de ligt Sanchez and jan ??!

Ligt is one signing I genuinely want to see done. Based on Herc and the papers it sounds like we're actively working on it and it is one of our primary deals to complete. I have not decided for me how I feel about that in relation to Toby leaving, will let time sort that out. Would be very sad if it does not go through as I suspect Toby will leave regardless and we'll have to settle for a fallback target. Having watched more Ajax this year than normal due to my own interest in Kluivert, De Jong, and De Ligt, to me he is the pick of the litter and a genuine world class CB just on the edge of being unlocked.

Nah, that doesn't sit right with me after selling Walker to City. Breaking up the best back.line we've ever seen to all our rivals.

The only way you'd stomach it is if we got someone they would be reluctant to sell to a rival, like Martial.
