This needs 14/20 teams to agree for it to go through, not unanimous.
This is what's killing the game in Spain.
Half the Spanish teams get less than teams in the Championship get for TV money.
Barca & Madrid get so much more than anyone in TV rights that there is no real competiton there.
That is a very short sighted approach. The few million you might gain from selling your overseas revenue would eventually be eroded from having to sell a weaker domestic product.
Agreed with the overall sentiment here. This is really liverpool's last gasp attempt at maintaining their top status. They are slipping dramatically, but still do have a massive international name. If they can get this kind of revenue in, it would help their position alot.
It wouldnt be the same as in spain, as here we have around 5/6 clubs, but it would create a quasi mini-league at the top, and within that, more likely than not, the money would be stacked from top to bottom (with probably the north london clubs getting the least).
In any event, if we ever want to see another spurs coming through, i.e. a team slowly building something rather than just existing for the sake of it, than this is a bad idea.
Also, money is draining the soul of football and I think most football fans would agree. Watching a team like man city take all the plaudits because of a sugar daddy is heart breakening. I applaud Arsenal for the way they did it, i.e. the best football and astute buys. I applaud Man United by building a dynasty. I applaud us for taking the pproach with youth, zeal and zest, breaking into the top.
To be honest, I don't see football dying, because it's such an internationally recognised sport, but I know that if it keeps going down the money-obsessed route that it's going down, it will lose many passionate fans who can no longer identify with the people they are cheering on. Why do you think BAE is so popular? Sure he's one cool customer, but he's a real person, and they are so few and far between these days that he gets so much attention.
I want my football back.
P.s. my post gets more and more emotional as it goes on. Probably best just to stop around halfway.
"While we must be careful to maintain the integrity of the Premier League we have to maintain our position in Europe as well."
That is a very short sighted approach. The few million you might gain from selling your overseas revenue would eventually be eroded from having to sell a weaker domestic product.
Liverpool are one of the top 5 earners in the Premier League vastly above our income. Their continued absence from the Champions League will dent that and a new stadium for us will help close the gap.
If this were to be agreed then the likes of David Beckham would become essential for commercial revenue. You would have a breed of footballers trying to turn themselves into brands and everything would be about their image. The press would lap it up and these players would command astronomical wages.
Never going to happen in a million years. There's 20 clubs in the Premier League and 16 of them at least are not going to vote for it.
Perhaps Liverpool would like to consider forming a break away league with Chelsea, Arsenal and Man Utd and then they can play each other 16 times a season and sell the rights to that to Thailand and Malaysia or wherever. What an exciting competition that would be!!
Basically the product is the Premier League which currently Liverpool play in, if they want to sell another product then they can leave the Premier League, go and make the new product and have a go a selling that instead.
