As has been said, the Scousers are trying to look after themselves whilst they still have a 'name' that means something to some people.

What has to be remembered is that the Premiership Rights are worth a fair amount because the league is the envy of other countries because all the games are competitive - ok there may be divides in the levels of the teams but on a given day there are upsets and these are more frequent that other European leagues. Why? Because the TV rights are split evenly - any change will move the equilibrium and make our league those of the others.

I still remember the days when gate receipts were shared between clubs - and that's when we really did have a competitive league and is how the likes of Derby, Notts Forest, QPR, WBA and Ipswich were able to compete against the glamour clubs.

It shows that Liverpool don't give a shit about football or the quality of the Premier League just themselves, the next step would be a European League because the PL would become a bit like Spanish and Scottish football.

What we have at the moment is the fairest solution for all and should be maintained. There may be a case for being able to negotiate your own TV rights for the Europa League and Carling Cup as nobody in this country is interested in them.

This is what's killing the game in Spain.

Half the Spanish teams get less than teams in the Championship get for TV money.

Barca & Madrid get so much more than anyone in TV rights that there is no real competiton there.

Exactly, the knock on effect is also pointed out by BC below

That is a very short sighted approach. The few million you might gain from selling your overseas revenue would eventually be eroded from having to sell a weaker domestic product.

Basically Liverpool are just being ****s. The reason the PL is so strong is because we fairly distribute out the TV money allowing all teams to stay competitive.

Agreed with the overall sentiment here. This is really liverpool's last gasp attempt at maintaining their top status. They are slipping dramatically, but still do have a massive international name. If they can get this kind of revenue in, it would help their position alot.

It wouldnt be the same as in spain, as here we have around 5/6 clubs, but it would create a quasi mini-league at the top, and within that, more likely than not, the money would be stacked from top to bottom (with probably the north london clubs getting the least).

In any event, if we ever want to see another spurs coming through, i.e. a team slowly building something rather than just existing for the sake of it, than this is a bad idea.

Also, money is draining the soul of football and I think most football fans would agree. Watching a team like man city take all the plaudits because of a sugar daddy is heart breakening. I applaud Arsenal for the way they did it, i.e. the best football and astute buys. I applaud Man United by building a dynasty. I applaud us for taking the pproach with youth, zeal and zest, breaking into the top.

To be honest, I don't see football dying, because it's such an internationally recognised sport, but I know that if it keeps going down the money-obsessed route that it's going down, it will lose many passionate fans who can no longer identify with the people they are cheering on. Why do you think BAE is so popular? Sure he's one cool customer, but he's a real person, and they are so few and far between these days that he gets so much attention.

I want my football back.

P.s. my post gets more and more emotional as it goes on. Probably best just to stop around halfway.

Liverpool are one of the top 5 earners in the Premier League vastly above our income. Their continued absence from the Champions League will dent that and a new stadium for us will help close the gap.

If this were to be agreed then the likes of David Beckham would become essential for commercial revenue. You would have a breed of footballers trying to turn themselves into brands and everything would be about their image. The press would lap it up and these players would command astronomical wages.

Bad idea - individual TV rights for the more famous clubs would do to the rest of the EPL what the Premier League did to the rest of professional football in this country when it was set up.

I don't agree with anything Liverpool say out of principle.

Liverpool, Chelsea, Arsenal and UTD already have their own TV channels if this was such a good idea why don't they have more subscribers? Because it's the league that's exciting not just one club.

 Simple business. The free market has no loyalty to regions.

One of the biggest factors in the huge support that United,Liverpool and Arsenal get in the Far East is the colour of their kits............Red.
If it happens our only chance of getting a share in the market is to buy a load of Asian players.

It is a fairly dumb idea, but it would boost Liverpool FC's earnings (in the short term at least) which would boost share price etc. so you can see why the Liverpool top brass are putting it forward.

It does make me hope even more that they won't qualify for Europe again.

Never going to happen in a million years. There's 20 clubs in the Premier League and 16 of them at least are not going to vote for it.

Perhaps Liverpool would like to consider forming a break away league with Chelsea, Arsenal and Man Utd and then they can play each other 16 times a season and sell the rights to that to Thailand and Malaysia or wherever. What an exciting competition that would be!!

Basically the product is the Premier League which currently Liverpool play in, if they want to sell another product then they can leave the Premier League, go and make the new product and have a go a selling that instead.

According to te Guardian (http://image.guardian.co.uk/sys-files/Guardian/documents/2011/05/18/sportscribddoc.pdf) in the year before last Liverpool's turnover (with CL) was £185m, our turnover was £119m. It's estimated we made £30m from last season's CL campaign, so presumably Liverpool lost a similar amount. That means last year Liverpool's turnover was £155m and ours was £140m. Of course that was them without CL and us with so in fact the gulf is still huge as you say.

However, in 2009/10, even before their most recent spending spree, their wage-bill was at £129m whereas ours was only at £67m.

In other words their extra revenue raising ability is more than eaten up in the ridiculous amount they spend on wages - £62m a year more than us!!

The question is therefore have they a better squad than us for the extra they spend on it?

In the answer to that question people should be able to see what a truly amazing job Levy is doing for us.

The scousers are totally deluded. Their glory days are long gone and they still think they are one of the "elite" PL teams, which they patently are not. If they end up pissing around just above mid table, (which i believe they will for some time to come) they can forget about massive contracts.

Agree totally. Why would clubs like Villa,Everton and Newcastle vote themselves less money...crazy!
Also crazy and incredibly selfish of Liverpool to even suggest such a thing publicly.Just increases the dislike that other clubs feel towards them.
They should be content that they're making more from Asian merchandising than most other EPL clubs without advocating the dilution of the competitiveness of the League.

It wont happen, and it shouldnt happen. The problem isnt that we share that money fairly, its that the Spanish FA and Liga officials haven't got the balls to end the Barca and Real duopoly and hand out the money in their league more fairly. We shouldnt be following the Spanish example, they should be following ours, as the anger shown by the other 18 clubs in La Liga has shown.

Utd have done fine competing in Europe, the English teams constantly reach the knockout stages, we pay some of the biggest fees, some of the biggest wages, this muppet is just complaining because Liverpool used to be guaranteed CL money and know they arent and they cant cope. No doubt Arsenal will do the same once their star has dimmed.

Nobody here in the States is going to pay to watch Liverpool line up and play against their reserves. If they want a second actor on the stage they have to pay for it. The other 19 teams are just as important. Greedy bastards.

As others have said it's the Dippers last throw of the dice to try and compete/stay with the CL clubs as their star is faslling at a massive rate at the moment. It was not so long ago they were record League championship holders, they aint won it in 21 years now and won't do anytime soon. everyone else seems to be happy with the status quo so why change it...?
